Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2004 http://www.zaman.org/?bl=international&alt...040921&hn=12424 Saddam to Declare Candidacy for Iraqi Elections Overthrown Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who was arrested by US forces last December, reportedly plans to run as a candidate in the Iraqi elections scheduled for January 2005. Saddam's lawyer Giovanni di Stefano told Denmark's B.T. newspaper that Saddam decided during one of their discussions that he would declare his candidacy for the elections. Stefano said that there was no law that prevented Saddam from appearing on the ballot. He added that Saddam hopes to regain his presidency and palaces via the democratic process. Contrary to the statements of Iraqi Interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, Stefano claims, "Saddam has no chance to be tried before the elections. Moreover, no international law prevents him from coming forward." Saddam's lawyer defends that the ambiguity in Iraq will favor Saddam at the polls. Stefano remarked that a recent Gallup poll indicates that 42 percent of the Iraqi people want their former leader back. Meanwhile, evaluating the conditions of Saddam in jail, Allawi said that Saddam had asked him for mercy. Well.. Saddam's counting on Gallup.. I guess nobody ever told him "You think the poll is inaccurate" So.. any idea on the system for Iraqi elections? one big primary followed by a runoff is one guess I suspect the "Anybody but Saddam" vote will be strong too
Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2004 I don't think someone in jail could run for president. Then again, if he's on the ballot, and he wins, well that would be like saying this whole horrible mess was just a waste of time.

Jingus 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2004 This does worry me a little. If Saddam actually runs, it's vaguely possible that he might actually win. (If he did win, it would probably be due to some kind of voter fraud, terrorist intimidation, or whatever, but still.) If that happened, well, what do we do NOW? BUTT 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2004 Well, he got 100 percent of the vote last time, so I'd say he's got a good chance. I'm sure this whole "going to jail" thing will hurt him, though. Imagine how the Iraqi citizens felt finding out that Saddam Hussein was a criminal!
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 23, 2004 I think we are all making a rash decision here. Who says Saddam won't be an outstanding President. I mean, look at how well he did as horrible, ruthless and evil dictator. The guy brings commitment to the job, you gotta give him that. I mean, what other President would have the work ethic to volunteer to pick out a prisoner to be executed and then kill the man himself? That is dedication! What a fucktard. -=Mike Wait.. if Saddam wins.. we're supposed to be nice to him? so much for him being an outlaw dictator and all that. So, Allawi's claims about Iraq are infallible.. like how he claimed that they had chemical weapons that they could fire within 45 minutes. How about W declaring that Iraq would have elections in January because Allawi told him they would? comparing Allawi to Saddam isn't too flattering to Allawi

Allawi is our ally, and just like ALL of our other allies in this endeavor, Kerry has decided to knife him in the back. Just like the "coalition of the bribed" and the like, Kerry has taken the Democratic Party's recent love of dictators (thank you, Jimmy Carter) and used it. God willing, Bush will hang him with this noose. -=Mike

Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Wait.. John Kerry is bad, since he'll bash Saddam but he also is with dictators Allawi also has no reason to sugarcoat stuff anyways, and he knows Iraq, since he's spent half his life in England and giving foreign aid to countries that just happen to support our acts (like Costa Rica, Palau and Tonga) is not any sort of bribery at all. And the Coalition is vast too! And John Kerry is being bad for daring to question it's awesomeness. It's not window dressing! Our 28 allies provide 13% of the troops by themselves! Anyways.. it's just a small handful of people fighting us in Fallujah, it's not like our withdrawal from that city was a Vietnam-esque political move where the Fallujah brigade that we let administer the city were fighting the Americans. Anyways, Iraqis are more optimistic than we are, and that's a good thing! did I summarize the messege well? Are the insurgents committing suicide at the gates of Iraq? Guest INXS Report post Posted September 24, 2004 If Saddam ran for re-election and won that would fucking hilarious. To me anyway, certainly not the Iraqi people. It might be ab idea to LET him run, and perhpaps he'll get such a minimal portion of the votes that we can finally put to rest any claims that life was better under Saddam and that the Iraqi people prefered Saddam in power to being over run by foreign invaders. Of course, it COULD backfire, with Saddam winning by a landslide.

Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2004 followup on the Kerry/Allawi thing http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...allawi_biden_dc Biden Says Assured Allawi of Support if Kerry Wins WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leading Democratic senator said on Sunday he assured interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi that U.S. support for him would continue if John Kerry (news - web sites) were elected president. Allawi, who paid a high-profile visit to the White House last week, responded: "Thank you, and I know it," said Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), the ranking Democrat on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Biden and other senators met with Allawi, who addressed Congress and the U.N. General Assembly during his trip. In an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Biden angrily disputed assertions by the administration that Kerry's criticism of Bush policy in Iraq (news - web sites) meant he would abandon the effort. "I personally was authorized by Kerry in front of all my colleagues to say the first thing in a private meeting. I said, 'Mr. President, you know me.' And he said, 'Yes, I do.' I said, 'I guarantee you that John Kerry as president -- you will continue to have the full support of the United States of America in order to be able to establish a representative republic.' He said, 'Thank you, and I know it."' At the White House on Thursday, President Bush (news - web sites) said he and Allawi would "stay the course" in Iraq.
