EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Figured I'd get this up as I have an early class tomorrow. This weekend's theme is "fuck the Yankees-Red Sox series." A meaningless circle jerk to decide playoff seeding, and the Yankees are 4 1/2 games up anyway. Meanwhile, we have the Athletics facing the Anaheim Angels. The Angels are just two back of the A's. We also have the Giants and Dodgers this weekend, with the Giants back just half a game, pending the result of tonight's games. Both these series come without the benefit of the wild card as a safety net. So we have some great baseball on the West Coast this weekend.
treble 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 The more exciting race in the AL East is for 4th. The Jays are only 1/2 game behind the D-Rays heading into Tampa for the weekend. Looks like 3rd's out of the question with the Orioles 7 games up, but keep the faith!
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Pinella predicted that the D-Rays wouldn't be in last place this year...of course, no one believed that, but they WERE doing to pretty good the first half of the season. The team owner should be glad though, each year they're getting better. Sure, not a 81-81 team, but evolution takes time.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Giants are back to 1.5 games behind the Dodgers and lost the WC lead to the Cubs with their defeat tonight. Schmidt pitched a stellar game, but a five-run Houston ninth dashed that away. I'm trying to figure out who I'd rather see win the West at this point. Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Santana goes for number 20 Friday. I'm looking forward too the Giants-Dodger series. Dodgers probably have the advantage has 2 of the Giants 3 top starters will miss the series.

Hektik 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 It is amazing that the national media will still probably pay more attention to the Red Sox/Yankees. There is another long time rivalry that is very heated and happening this weekend, Dodgers/Giants. Some baseball historians call it the best rivalry in baseball history. I don't know if it's a west coast bias or not, but the national media will overlook it and Red Sox/Yankees will still be treated as the biggest series of the year. There is another long time rivalry that is very heated and happening this weekend, Dodgers/Giants. The Yankees and Red Sox have a lot of very interesting recent history to sell the games on, and they have the Curse storyline to sell it on. The Dodgers and Giants really have niether. Sure it's an interesting rivalry, but the bulk of the interest stems from their NY days, and truth be told, hasn't been all that exciting in the last ten years or so, because both have rarely been in (serious) contention for first against each other. Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Tampa Bay's franchise record for wins is 69. Right now they are sitting on 64, with ten games left. They need a 6-4 run. Well they are better than last year, where they went 63-99 (I know, barely better), which was what I was trying to point. If they win at least half their remaining games, they can be 68-94, which is still a little improvement from the previous season.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Give it up, Al. No matter how good other baseball is, people will almost always come back to this series, mainly because of all the childish shit we're sure to see half of the time. Don't get me wrong, they've provided some classics over the years, but then again, that's true for ALL rivalries. I don't know how anyone can have an interest in watching these two go at it after last weekend's series.

Jericholic82 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Anglesault, welcome to the hell that is my everyday life as a New Yorker living in Southern Cali but the as-angels series will probably settle who gets to job to the Yanks (I guess the Triple H of baseball) in the ALDS

ESPN.com actually has an Ichiro Watch graphic on the main MLB page. Someone other than LaBron or Barry Bonds! Shocked the hell out of me. After that tiny slump he had going for awhile, I thought he had no shot, and his projected hits looked to be about 1 shy of the record. I'm going to the Dodgers/Giants home series finale on Sunday. Even planning on going to LA for the last game of the season on October 3rd (my birthday). After last night's game, it was like the Giants were revisting April for old times sake. Just to see if they could still blow games they should've won. This after certain relievers whined about not getting enough playing time. I hope Alou has every starter at throw a max of 8 2/3 innings from this point on. No chances. Even if we're getting blown out, even if their pitch counts are high, even if their arms are dangling by a thread, keep the bullpen AWAY! They can only make it worse. Who does San Diego get this weekend?
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 What I find ironic is the ones who complain about ESPN's love affair with Barry Bonds are the same ones singing the praise of this overrated Boston/New York crap. ESPN would have to kiss Barry's ass for 30 straight years to make up for the pointless hours they have spent talking about the Yankees/SOX bull.

Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 24, 2004 If I followed the NL West, I'd say right now that is more important. You have the Giants riding the shirt-tails of the Dodgers, and then the Padres are still in the wild card race, but probably have very little chance. Sorry I grew up watching the AL East teams though.
Big McLargeHuge 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Yeah, and I'd snatch 'em but you have to legally give up your right to keep a Bond's homer or something like that. Contract and everything. The Guy is determined for some peice of history. I've watched a few of the Sox/Yanks games this season, mostly to hold me over until the Gent's game started. Yeah, they get a sick amount of attention, but they're fun to watch. At this point, though, the only thing at stake is determining which team's fans have bigger dicks. The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted September 24, 2004 ... Why don't we just delete the last 16 posts in this thread, pretend it was all a bad dream, and then try to have some non-ESPN non-East Coast-angst-flavored baseball discussion? Oh, and one more thing: I don't know if it's a west coast bias or not, but the national media will overlook it and Red Sox/Yankees will still be treated as the biggest series of the year. Because it is. The two best teams in the Majors. Except that they both have lesser records than the St. Louis Cardinals.
Guest Brian Report post Posted September 24, 2004 Are we going to have a OAO thread for the Sox/Yanks this weekend, because I like having it seperate. Also, if you get the Comcast Digital HD channels (664 and 665 in Seattle), they'll be showing all of that series in HD this weekend and the reception, I find, is better than ESPN HD. The Astros have sucked all year till this last month, and the Cubs are a team in limbo that have had injuries all year.

The Orioles are capable of being a good team, it's just they tend to play poorly against everyone else. With some more experience in their starting rotation, I think the Orioles could become playoff contenders in a few years.
