Special Edition DVDs?

Recommended Posts

My folks rented 'Home on the Range' the other night - thankfully, for my sanity, I did not watch the movie - and, of course, just like with any other Disney movie, there were tons of previews. Almost all the 'Coming soon to DVD and Video...' previews were for special editions... Mulan, Aladdin..

And, though this wasn't advertised, it is definetly the one I'm most looking forward to: Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (Special Edition) . Allow me a moment to be a fangirl here... There's going to be THREE discs!! Look at all the extras we got with two...now they'll be THREE!! Okay, I'm done. Moving right along...

It's not just Disney. You have Ed Wood coming out and - this next one I recently read about - Shawshank Redemption.

Not to say I'm complaining - Hell, I'm looking forward to Mulan, Ed Wood, and POTC - yet it just seems so odd that, all of a sudden, you have all these 'Special Editions' coming out. [i'm definetly not complaining when it comes to POTC; yet that'll make it, what, a 'Special Collector's', since the first two-disc set was already a 'Collector's'?]

I thought POTC was a special edition -- wtf?

I often wondered about the "special" "deluxe" "limited" and "ultimate" edition titles myself.

THOSE SHIFTY DISNEY BASTARDS -- I just looked at my POTC cover, and it is only a COLLECTOR'S EDITION...

If you already have the initial two-disc release of POTC, there really isn't any reason to buy the upcoming three-disc Special Edition. It's just the initial two-disc release packaged together with an extra disc (see also Spider-Man Deluxe Edition).

Well, my buying it will all depend on what the extras on the third disc are.

The third disc is supposed to contain 8 "never before seen" new features. The third disc will inevitably show up online, so you should be able to save yourself a few bucks.

More on the POTC 'Lost Disc':

Okay, this is copy and pasted from http://www.potcfandom.com/news.php

Buena Vista Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Lost Disc for 2nd November 2004 priced at $29.99 SRP. Released in time for the holiday season, this new set packages together the existing 2-Disc SE with a 'Lost Disc' containing 8 never-before-seen bonus features...

“Becoming Captain Jack”: The film’s star Johnny Depp divulges revelations about fulfilling his boyhood dream of playing a pirate and his unique “take” on Jack Sparrow.

“Becoming Barbossa”: Dive deeper into how actor Geoffrey Rush fleshed out his villainous character.

“Thar She Blows!”: The film’s ship Interceptor is featured, from building it to blowing it up.

“The Monkey’s Name Is Jack”: Meet Levi and Tara, the two tiny masters of mayhem who play the infamous primate pirate, and get Johnny Depp’s and Geoffrey Rush’s recollections on working with them.

“Pirates Around The World”: A fun comparison of dubbed versions from across the seven seas.

More “Fly On The Set” Featurettes: Join the filmmakers as they create additional key sequences from the movie.

“Spirit of the Ride”: Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and more of the filmmakers reflect on their earliest memories of the attraction and how it inspired the film.

“Sneak Attack Animatic”: Before executing the movie’s sneak attack sequence, the filmmakers created animation based on how they visualized the scene – and here is the animatic for this exciting scene.

Why?

Because people will buy them, even if they have the other one.

Me personally? I could care less about the extras. I just care about the movies. I never pay attention to the "The Making of" or the deleted scenes or even the commentary. I consider it mostly fluff anyways. I'm not a film buff, I could care less about they did the makeup.

Why spend $29.99 for the dvd when I can spend $14.99 for the "bare-bones" dvd when all that matters really...is the MOVIE.

I got the barebones Shawshank from Slackers, then came home and was surfing on-line, and found out about the Special Editon that would be released in a few months.

Man, I was pissed about that.

I just noticed that Hell Boy is getting a special edition. Thanks. Right after I bought the movie back in august. I love how the movie companies love to rip us off left and right and then they bitch and moan about people downloading movies.

The only thing new on the Disney releases is that it will have one disc featuring current Disney Channel stars singing songs from the movies......thats right the cast of That's So Raven will sing the theme songs.

I always want the most stuff on a DVD in terms of commentary, making ofs, and all of that. I'm very much into film, and I find a well made DVD something of a learning experience in film.

Not that I care about well made extras, not simply promotional bullshit.

Even when it's a film that I didn't totally love (or even like at all in the case of my example), like Pearl Harbor, as long as the extras are informative and entertaining I'll own the DVD.

$29.99? Where are you buying your movies?

For the most part, special edition DVDs should only cost a few more dollars than a previous "bare bones" release. The few extra dollars are usually worth it. In addition to the extras, Special Edition DVDs generally have better video and audio than a "bare bones" release.

Are you saying that if you walked into a store and saw the "bare bones" Snapper-case edition of The Shawshank Redemption for $14.99, you would buy that instead of the two-disc Special Edition for $19.99? As another example, let's say that you go to Best Buy to buy Clerks on DVD. Would you really get the initial single-disc, non-anamorphic release for $14.99 instead of the three-disc 10th Anniversary Edition for $19.99?
