Well, from the one's I've seen:

Jericho vs. Juvy, WCW Superbrawl 8 - ***

DDP vs. Benoit, WCW Superbrawl 8 - *** 1/4

Konnan vs. Jushin Liger, WCW Slamboree 1996 - ***

Saturn vs. Raven, WCW Fall Brawl 1998 - *** 1/2

DDP vs. Bret Hart, WCW World War 3 1998 - ***

They're all pretty solid, but nothing spectacular.

Meng vs. Chris Benoit, WCW Slamboree 1997

Meng vs. Chris Benoit (deathmatch), WCW GAB 1997

I enjoyed both of those. Very stiff but fun to watch. I'd say they were easily Meng's best matches in WCW.

You should check out Scott Keith's reviews on 411. Although the guy is annoying as hell, his star ratings are usually pretty accurate, and I bet he's reviewed all of those shows.

Really, for John Doe reading someone else's star ratings I don't think anyone's star ratings are accurate across the board and that includes whenever I give a star rating out to a match too. Each match can appeal to someone in a different way. Eh, what I'm saying is that for every single person that I've read who's done multiple reviews I will find myself strongly disagreeing either way for at least a couple of matches. Read, but keep an open mind for yourself.

Also, a lot of my favourite matches are not 5 star matches and I've watched a ton of stuff from everywhere. There are a good amount of matches out there that are 3 stars or so that get across points or have something about them that can make them more entertaining to watch than a lot of the super classics out there. Know what you like and go for it.

Good points. It's just that in my opinion his star ratings are accurate. I tend to agree with what he likes and dislikes about a match, and personally think he's a good match reviewer, although everything else he talks about is annoying as hell. JoeDirt may not agree with his reviews, but I'm just recommending a good place, in case he does.

Oh, I know all about Scott Keith. I go back and forth on his ratings, but agree a majority of the time with him, I suppose. But the matches I asked about here are either from reviews he did a shitty job on and never redid (Slamboree 97, for example) or matches I've heard varying opinions on, and am looking for some others.

I'm interested to hear you liked the Benoit/Meng matches, Cawthon. See? Keith only gave the deathmatch **1/4. :)

Meng vs. Chris Benoit, WCW Slamboree 1997

Meng vs. Chris Benoit (deathmatch), WCW GAB 1997

I enjoyed both of those. Very stiff but fun to watch. I'd say they were easily Meng's best matches in WCW.

I really liked these two. The first one a good bit more than the second one though. Meng's gimmick was a monstor and I'm also a fan of the little guy vs the monstor. But this is a time when being a smartmark helps me enjoy a match better. Knowing the legendary stories about Meng and his toughness, it lets me get sucked into the match all the more because it makes me feel Benoit's in even more trouble than I would've thought if I never heard the stories.

The first one was all sorts of fun. I remember the interview with Woman and Benoit on WCWSN which I thought did a good job of setting the stage for this. Benoit going on about he worked for everything in his life and how he tells Woman, "No matter what don't throw in the towel." The intensity by Benoit here is off the charts. He makes this look like a fight and the point where he makes his comeback by ramming multiple punches into Meng's head is a major mark out moment for me because it's just filled with so much fire.

The other highlight of the match was when Meng just clobbered (Benoit is 100% certifiably insane) Benoit down with forearms and Benoit rises up before the 10 count asking for more!! Sends chills up my spine every time. He's gotta do that spot again sometime in the future because that ruled all. I think this was match was a great example of just how great Benoit was in 97.

The second match wasn't as good but I thought it was a very interesting bout in that it had some smart stuff in it but it didn't come off as well as the first. Interesting to analyze from that perspective. Still fun though.

Meng is a wrestler I've always liked but it was obvious around this time that he couldn't move nearly as well as he did in the past. In the WWF, I remember him being the guy I'd say to my brother, "Meng's pretty good even though he loses all the time; he's got a good amount of offence and is fun to watch". If Meng could've moved here like he used to be able to these matches I feel would've even been better.

*There's one more WCW Benoit vs Meng match that took place from the international NWO Takeover Tour. I should be getting that match shortly and it'll be interesting to see how good it is.

Meng vs. Chris Benoit (deathmatch), WCW GAB 1997

I'd say they were easily Meng's best matches in WCW.

I disagree. I think his match with Sting at GAB95 was his best in WCW.

Man, there's a lot of posting activity going on in this thread for a short amount of time.

Sting was always good against *big, powerful guys. I remember liking the match you're talking about but it's been several years since I've seen it.

*Meng wasn't as big as Vader or the Giant but he was wrestling as an undestructable force at the time. When he initially came to WCW he was put over big time as a lethal monstor. He still had that gimmick when he wrestled Benoit in 97 but it wasn't quite as strong as before.

Yah Sting also dragged Giant/Big Show to his best WCW match and, possibly, best overall singles match. Vader thought him well how to work around big guys.

And I actually liked Meng/Haku as a worker a lot more than most did(until the late 90's atleast) as he knew how to work matches aorund his strengths and had a pretty good moveset at times in his career. Plus the Islanders are one of the most underrated tag teams ever.

As for the Benoi/Meng matches, I've only seen one. It was at the Slamboree 97 PPV, I think, and I remember it being decent but not much more.

Jericho vs Juvy both are good with almost everybody doing their best to sell the mask match especially Heenan making the "Juvi is so ugly" jokes. Besides everything that Jericho did with the luchadores was gold, very entertaining stuff.

The Road Wild match wasn't as good as Superbrawl though, having Dean Malenko (who was feuding with Jericho at the time) as guest ref kind of affects how you view the match, as having a face ref while Jericho dominates Juvy for most of the match certainly doesn't help Juvy look good, especially the ending.

Kanyon/Awesome at Slamboree 2000 was a damn good match while it lasted and shows that Kanyon was underutilised as a face. It's often overlooked due to a cop-out ending and the fact that Kanyon took a huge bump off the triple deck cage that evening

Jericho vs. Juvy, WCW Superbrawl 8

Juvi was the superior worker at this time, but this was all Jericho's match. There are some great heel comedy spots in this one, and I like the finish. The main problem with the match is that Juvi doesn't really let loose like he should and there's not the amount of tension there should be for a match with so much at stake. Still worth seeing.

DDP vs. Benoit, WCW Superbrawl 8

This wasn't really all that special. It was wisely laid out, but it was a one-man show as seemingly every spot built to a sequence to make DDP look good. Benoit needed more.

DDP vs. Curt Hennig, WCW Starrcade 1997

They had a better match at Road Wild, although it still wasn't all that great either. But this was one of the better heavyweight feuds WCW had in 1997.

Saturn vs. Benoit, WCW Starrcade 1997

Suffocated by angle. Overbooked. Too short.
