EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2004 Today we've got Anaheim @ Texas (Bartolo Colon vs. Kenny Rogers), Seattle @ Oakland (Jamie Moyer vs. Barry Zito), and Cincinnati @ Chicago (Brandon Claussen vs. Carlos Zambrano). Today will help clarify the pennant race, as wel remove all but one of those pesky half games.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2004 Oh yeah, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention possibly the best pitching matchup of the season. Randy Johnson vs. Ben Sheets tonight in Arizona.
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2004 Interesting note about the Athletics: they've had a .700 winning percentage in September in the four seasons from 2000-2003 (21-7, 17-4, 18-8, and 14-11, respectively). This year, they're 10-14 in September, with a 5.24 ERA for the month.

I'd probably say Clemens vs. Johnson would be the best match-up for the NL...mainly because I'm biased, and like both pitchers over Sheets. However, the stats don't lie, all three are in contention for the NL Cy Young Award.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2004 I can't really see Ben Sheets winning the Cy Young. And for all the talk about Randy Johnson he's 14-14 this year and it's hard to see a .500 pitcher winning the Cy Young. Mind you, I'm not like John Kruk, thinking that the guy with the most wins should get the Cy Young...but you gotta at least win quite a bit more than you lose. In the AL, Santana might have 1 fewer win than Schilling but his stats overall are better, so give it to him.

Mind you, I'm not like John Kruk, thinking that the guy with the most wins should get the Cy Young...but you gotta at least win quite a bit more than you lose. That would require him pitching a shutout every single time out. Even then, he'd get a number of no-decisions. In Johnson's 14 losses, the D-Backs have scored more than two runs only twice. Johnson has 24 quality starts out of 33 total (an impressive number -- Clemens, his main competition, has 23 in 32 starts), and 13 of them came in losses or no-decisions (the D-Backs went on to lose all of those NDs, too). You can't blame the guy because he pitches on the worst offensive team in the majors. EDIT: As an aside, based on their league ranking in these categories, which of these pitchers should win the Cy Young? A B ERA 3 5 K 1 5 K/BB 2 14 K/9 2 7 QS 1 3 WHIP 1 3 Opp BA 1 5 Opp OPS 1 3 (QS = quality start)
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 27, 2004 Pitcher A obviously.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2004 I know that Johnson is on a shitty team that doesn't score, and what I'm saying is that while his numbers look Cy Young worthy he's still 14-14. Being on such a bad team is probably going to cost him the Cy Young. See, in the AL Schilling might have 1 more win than Johan Santana but we're talking 21-20 here. Since Santana has better numbers, give it to him. In the NL Clemens is 18-4 and on a contending team, so he'll likely get it. I could be wrong, but that's usually how these things go. When did a .500 pitcher last win the Cy Young?

Being on such a bad team is probably going to cost him the Cy Young. Probably, yes. Which proves once again that the writers are tools that can't see anything unless it's right in front of their faces. In the NL Clemens is 18-4 and on a contending team, so he'll likely get it. I could be wrong, but that's usually how these things go. When did a .500 pitcher last win the Cy Young? Never happened...but there's a first time for everything. This isn't like the MVP race...the award is supposed to go to the best pitcher in the league. No subjective definitions of the word "valuable" here. Just the best. That's Johnson, without a doubt. Johnson's superior to Clemens in every way that matters, except for the one he can't control.
Guest Smues Report post Posted September 27, 2004 Damn. The 2nd to last (I think) Braves game on TBS of the year, and it's rained out. And the makeup will be on Turner South. Bah.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 Never happened...but there's a first time for everything. Actually, a sub-.500 pitcher won the Cy Young. Can anyone name him without looking it up?
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 Damn. The 2nd to last (I think) Braves game on TBS of the year, and it's rained out. And the makeup will be on Turner South. Bah. That's why you shell out the cash for MLB Extra Innings. I was skeptical at the beginning of the season because of the cost, but it was so worth it. I credit being able to see an average of 10 games a day as being what made me more interested in baseball. Until this season, it was rare that I watched a non-Cubs game on TV. I can't imagine going back to getting a handful of games on TV every week.

Sheets looks like shit. Maybe if this was in June it would be the best match of the season. Sheets had a bad month in August (4.61 ERA), but he's rebounded, posting a 1.95 ERA in five starts thus far in September.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 I'm going to guess it's Gagne. ...... Damn you for getting that so quickly. Bruce Sutter also won the award with a 6-6 record. But no starter with a subpar winning percentage has ever won the award. But I do think Johnson will place in the top three. Sabermetrics has changed the way some sportswriters think. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 Chicago leads Cincinnati 9-1 in the 5th. Texas leads Anaheim 3-2 in the 7th. Houston leads St. Louis 9-0 in the 6th. And Boston leads Tampa Bay 5-2 in the eighth.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 Anaheim has come back to take a 4-3 lead in the 8th. Texas needs to answer, or their season is just about over.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 With the game 9-0, LaRussa pulled Pujols, only to watch his team tack on two runs and have the bases loaded with two outs for what would've been Pujols' spot had he not pulled him earlier in the game. I'm sure he couldn't care less, since they've got the division wrapped up, but a good Pujols at bat could've made it a game again. And at this rate, the Giants are going to have to win if they wanna stay just a half game back of the Cubs.

Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 Rogers should never have come out in the 8th, the Texas bullpen is the one part of their pitching that doesn't suck when they're not committing chair-related assault, you'd think they'd use it. Of course as i say that Jeff Nelson looks to be blowing it even more, loading the bases with one out on a walk and wild pitch.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 The Giants don't play tonight. Damn. I was just gonna go back and edit it after I realized that I had mistaken the Dodgers with the Giants. Oh well. And the Rangers keep things interesting, getting out of a one-out bases loaded situation.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 Jordan strikes out. Microcosm of the Rangers' season right there. Jump out to an early lead, go down late, make things interesting in the end, but ultimately come up short.
