This will be the first time in years they don't finish last and when was the last time they were in a pennant race the last week of September? This is a team everyone said would fade away because of no pitching. Bored 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2004 A's have a 5-2 lead heading to the 7th but they've had plenty of chances to make this game a blow out. I'm not overly concerned about the Angels coming back to win tonight (as long as the A's win tonight) but the Rangers better win tommorrow. That puts them now 1 game over the Giants for the WC, which is nice. 3 more with Cincy and the Giants have a tough series with SD and then finish at LA. I think the Astros will end up giving the Cubs more of a headache than the Giants at this point. Tonight we've got Anaheim at Texas (Kelvim Escobar vs. Chan Ho Park). Last horrah for the Rangers (but I've said that before). Also San Francisco @ San Diego (Jason Schmidt vs. Brian Lawrence). Perish the thought of the Cubs making the postseason two years in a row. Man, that possibility makes the entire postseason so stagnant; good thing we'll have new teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and Braves in the postseason to freshen things up. I'd rather the Braves and Red Sox not be in the playoffs either, but both teams have been good-great for quite some time (Braves won 13 straight division titles, Red Sox have been Playoff contenders every year for past 7-8 years if my memory is correct). Besides, I have someone who's always pushing the damn Padres on me for the past couple of years, so I just kinda have a soft spot for them to win...even though they probably won't. Now this year, with Wood, Prior, Maddux, Nomar, Sosa, Lee, Alou, Ramirez, and friends all unable to muster anything better than a Wild Card and end up 14 games or so behind the Cardinals...that's a choke. They'd be swept in 3 quite easily by the Cardinals. That said, I'll be rooting for the Padres to take out the Giants the next 3 games to help the Cubs out. God forbid a team make the playoffs without any ~ESPN STARS~ I mean that is what baseball is all about, right. Elite teams with "Superstars" that ESPN and Fox can get behind. Hell, get rid of the rest of the league and trim it down to six teams. Then the "real" teams won't have to deal with "little" teams that nobody cares about. Because we all know that if you don't care about a team, nobody does. What if the Padres do make the playoffs? They'd be swept in 3 quite easily by the Cardinals. You do know that the Cardinals would have to face David Wells and Jake Peavy in the first two games. I guess you never heard the phrase that good pitching stops good hitting. Okay, I'll amend it: Padres might take 1 game if Wells is out of his mind, but that's about it. Hektik, I noticed the Padres logo on your posts so I take it you're from the SD area or somewhere in S. CA? My original post doesn't really apply to you since you're a fan. I'm just saying that for most of the country the Pads are mostly viewed as a spoiler. As far as teams still contending for the WC that people would want to see, they'd finish a distant last behind the Cubs, Giants, and Astros. You can argue it all you want, but this is reality.
