Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 29, 2004 The Astros win, meaning they're a half game back of the Cubs. If they get the sweep tomorrow, I think they've got a great chance to sneak in the back door and snag the WC. Isn't the wild card itself basically sneaking in the backdoor? So they'd be sneaking in the back door of the backdoor.

Guest Evolution Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Ichiro's at 254, three shy of Sisler for the record. It'll take a miracle for him to fall short of breaking this record with a good number of games remaining.
strummer 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Apparently the Mets have hired Omar Minaya to be Head of Baseball Operations. It's a good move just for the fact it might get Jeff Wilpon out of the picture (temporarily at least)  Edit: Apparently it's official, and Minaya will be above Duquette in the decision making process  http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/apb...20Mets%20Minaya

Bored 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Tim Hudson is getting shelled tonight so it's looking like it's going to be a tie in the West. Just for more salt in the wound I see the Assholes by the Bay are going to tie up the Cubs in the Wild Card. Just wonderful. I hate baseball. Â So much for hoping the A's would clinch on Friday night when I'm at the game. They'd need to win the next two and the Angels to lose the next two for that to happen. Hopefully I won't be there to see their season end.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 I can't believe the Cubs. They go from losing 2/3 to the Mets to now losing to the Reds. Well, I stated before that anything less than 3/4 against the Reds is pathetic...the margin of error is thin now. Â Incidentally, it seems like the best teams to play when you REALLY need the wins to get in the playoffs are teams that don't give a shit because they've locked up the division. The Cardinals are just dicking around right now, and I'm hoping the Braves will be. Yanks should have nothing to worry about with the Twins, since they are in full "don't give a shit" mode. Â So in bizarre reverse logic the Cubs might be getting a break to get the chilling Braves for the last 3 games, and the Stros might be awaiting an ambush with the seemingly hapless Rockies. Either way the Giants look screwed...even if the last series with the Dodgers wasn't for the division title you know LA would want to screw them out of the WC. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 I just noticed that it's Clemens vs. Suppan tomorrow. That's certainly not good news. The Rockies may have to saddle up and play spoiler, because if not, the Astros may very well shock everyone and come away with the final playoff spot. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Giants win and with five days left in the season, a half game is all that separates three teams in the NL WC race. How bout some calculations, Al?

That has got to violate some kind of tampering rule. Can MLB be any less brazen about their plans to screw the Montreal Expos? Why would baseball want to screw with the Expos know that they're moving to D.C.? Whatever Minaya did to deserve such a high market job. It would seem he would of had one if he would of just stayed. A new owner, who you have to assume will attempt to make the team better and actually care about the teams future. Unlike the Mets, with that dink Fred Wilpon. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 At this point I don't think the Cubs can afford to lose a game. At this point I'd have to go with the Astros as the favorites to win the wild card, as much as it sickens me to do so. It's really sort of lame if the Stros do win it...they'd play the Braves and if there's one thing the Braves can do in the playoffs it's beat the Astros. At least the Cubs/Braves series would prove interesting.

sfaJack 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Wow...the Cubs paid off Satan or something and escaped that monster jam in the 7th. I was sure Dempster was gonna cough a hit and blow but, for once, he came through. Â Can't lose this game...can't lose this game....can't lose this game... Â EDIT: And, of course, despite loading the bases with no outs, the Cubs only get 1 run on a sac fly before Aramis bounes into his second DP of the day. This team never fails to amaze me, though I suppose I should be happy that they actually have a lead.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Hawkins blows another one-run save. He got Casey and Dunn with no problems and then gave up a triple to Jimenez. He got two quick strikes on Kearns and then gave up a double. Fantastic. Â And of course, he gets the next batter with no problem. Cubs fans let him hear it as they go off the field and rightfully so. He's been absolutely terrible in one-run games.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Hawkins gives up back to back extra base hits to blow the save, the game is now tied 2-2. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Welp, barring a comeback in the 12th, the Cubs will lose their fourth game in the last five days. Not a good sign when your opposition is the Mets and the Reds and it's the last week of the season. Looks like that Mets choke was our undoing, as it's been nothing but hard times since. Â If the Astros take the Cards tonight, they've gotta become the odds on favorite to take the WC. How depressing.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Don't worry, we do, too. At least you guys are going to postseason. The Cubs have choked and that's all you can say. Mr. Clutch, Moises Alou deflates a 12th inning rally, grounding into a doubleplay that scored one, but left the Cubs but with one run to work with. Â It's a shame, too. Up until Saturday, the Cubs had seemingly put it all together, winning just about every game on their road trip. Since then, they've dropped four games to the Mets and Reds and will have to welcome a Braves team that is quite hellbent on keeping them out of the postseason.
