starvenger Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 from Zap2It.com Food Network Dishes Out More 'Iron Chef America' LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) "Iron Chef" is coming across the Pacific to stay. The Food Network is going forward with a weekly "Iron Chef America" series on the heels of a successful set of specials in the spring. Ten episodes of the show will begin production next week in New York for a January premiere. "We are thrilled to be able to bring the excitement of Kitchen Stadium and 'Iron Chef America' to our new studios," says Kathleen Finch, who oversees prime-time programming for the Food Network. "This is the new era of 'Iron Chef,' and 'Iron Chef America' will continue to deliver the competitions and rivalries fans love." The "Iron Chef America" specials, which brought the Japanese show's format and two of its chefs to the United States to battle Food Network stars Bobby Flay, Mario Batali and Wolfgang Puck, drew strong ratings for the cable channel. The network says more than 12 million people watched the battles over the course of their premiere weekend in April. The new series will pit the American Iron Chefs against challengers from the United States and elsewhere. Flay and Batali will remain as Iron Chefs, while Masaharu Morimoto, an Iron Chef in the Japanese series who lives in the States, will replace Puck. "Good Eats" host Alton Brown will continue his role as play-by-play man and commentator. Challengers lined up for the series include Ming Tsai, a former Food Network host himself, and Frontera Grill owner/chef/cookbook author Rick Bayless. Hopefully Morimoto can adjust his style a bit more to suit the tastes of the American celebs. And I'm also hoping for an ep where Emeril gets his ass whooped...
Dangerous A Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 Emeril sucks. His style is primarily cajun and he would suck in that format.
starvenger Posted September 30, 2004 Author Report Posted September 30, 2004 Emeril sucks. His style is primarily cajun and he would suck in that format. That's my point. Emeril's is popular more because he uses pork fat and knows how to work an audience than because he's a great chef. I'm sure he's actually pretty good, but I don't think he's nearly as good as he's hyped up to be...
Kaertos Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Having actually eaten some of Emeril's food once, I can tell you that it was awesome. On the other hand, I actually ate at Bobby Flay's restaurant, and it was very good, although there was more of an emphasis on presentation than I like.
Karnage Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 Hopefully Morimoto can adjust his style a bit more to suit the tastes of the American celebs. And I'm also hoping for an ep where Emeril gets his ass whooped... Morimoto shouldn't hafto change anything. They should get judges that actually know about food (I hated that Sopranos guy) or stop trying to get revenge for Pearl Harbor this time around.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 Rick Bayless better hope for a theme ingredient that can be used in Mexican cuisine, otherwise he's screwed. Ming Tsai's show isn't even on Food Network anymore, but its on the Fine Living network which is owned by the same people that own Food Network. And its good to know that AB will be back..
SinToxic Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 Emeril is very much like the Rock... Although I havent tasted his food I have also tried Bobby's restaurant as well as Mario Batali's who was just amazing. I'm glad Puck is out because he is just annoying.
Jobber of the Week Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 Eh, no Puck? I wish they had dropped Bobby Flay instead, because he seems like an asshole. Emeril has overcommercialized himself, but anyone who says his cooking is overrated hasn't eaten at Delmonico.
Guest Brian Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 He's good, he's not cream of the crop, but he's good. He's just way too commercial for most chefs.

The tasters that you get are, for the most part, going to be exactly like Big Pussy or the girls from the original. Sure they'll try to be impartial, but in the end they're more likely to prefer what they know, and that will generally give the ICs at least a 1 point advantage. Morimoto, however is at a disadvantage because of his previous experience. He's used to cooking based on Japanese tastes and extrapolating different tastes from that. What he'd need to do is draw more on his experiences with his restaurant in Philly than with his IC history.
Guest Reservoir_Kitty Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 Hmph. Iron Chef America crapped all over the legacy of the original (and kickass) Iron Chef. I think I'll be skipping this one. I was slightly miffed that NONE of the original Iron Chefs won the last one. Screw that. The originals are the best. I hope Morimoto does better this time.

Guest Brian Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 Morimoto's style is way out there for most chefs. The thing about Japanese cooking in the states is that a lof of the flavors don't get a ton of exposure, plus the fact that what Morimnoto does is extend that into further territories. It's be like if someone was big in Moroccan-style cooking (which is probably going to be the next sort of style to catch fire stateside) and using all kind of spices and yogurts that were foreign to us and then building on that using even more styles and flavors. Nobu brought in Morimoto for a reason, and he's a top notch chef.

I think I'll be skipping this one. I was slightly miffed that NONE of the original Iron Chefs won the last one. Screw that. The originals are the best. I hope Morimoto does better this time. I can understand that. Although, I think that Morimoto and Sakai knew that they were jobbing - that egg battle had none of the "traditional" Morimoto style that I could tell. And before I forget, Todd English is another one who needs to get bitchslapped in a battle...
