treble 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2004 Shouldn't something like this be on 'Celebrity Justice' or another shitty show like that?

lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2004 All of the big time programs in high school recruit. My brother's team played against Detroit Country Day's junior varsity team, and after the game, the coaches from Country Day gave my dad their card in case my brother had any "problems" at Riverview (his school). Also, its much easier for the private schools to recruit. For instance the team we play for the league title friday, Monroe St Mary's CC is ranked #1 in the state in their division, hasnt lost a league game in about two years. The thing about them is that their team is made up of players from 17 different junior high schools. Our school is made up of kids from one junior high school and kids who came into the district during high school. They even stole a player from another school in our league. It was so obvious that this was a sports related transfer that the league and the state athletic board investigated it, but they couldn't prove it.

Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 I can't say too much, since I only played in 8th grade. But Texas High School football is pretty much one of those bizarre religious experiences, from what i've heard. Wasn't "Varsity Blues" based in Texas too? I don't know, since I never saw Varsity Blues, but it definitely takes place in a southern state. [EDIT]-imdb.com confirms it; Varsity Blues takes place in Texas: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139699/
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 What point are you trying to make? The movie makes it pretty clear that it's a town of assholes with a bunch of jerk kids. Welcome to real high school football. As for recruiting, depends of the state and year. Schools around me have be recruiting for years. You call it "school selection" and away the kid goes. I mean, what can anyone really do? If the kid doesn't want to play for you and his parents don't mind then let him go where he wants. The movie looks the a high school version of The Program. Only without the great actors...like...umm...James Caan.
godthedog 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 So, before you go see this movie, keep in mind all that I've said here. Do you want to support a team like this? Do you want to support the mind set that keeps things this way, i.e., winning is the only thing that matters, no matter how you do it? I, personally, will never see this movie, and I doubt anyone in my home town will, either. i don't understand this reasoning at all. if this movie is inspired by a certain high school, how is my going to see the movie "supporting" this high school? do they get a percentage of the gross? will the people at this high school think "hey, lots of people saw this movie based on us, that means the american people support what we do! let's keep doing it!" if i see 'the motorcycle diaries', does that mean i'm supporting communism in cuba? i'm not seeing the connection. Guest whitemilesdavis Report post Posted October 11, 2004 I saw the movie last night. A good flick, and it doesn't really glorify Odessa-Permian at all. It's more of a movie about kids being used and discarded by a town, school, team, coach, etc. Once again, a good movie, but not exactly the feel-good hit of the year. Steve J. Rogers 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2004 Obviously no one here gets the fact that this is based on a book with the same title that tears down the notion of "purity in HS football" especially in a factory like Texas http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...395268?v=glance I don't know how "toned down" the movie is, but if the source material is adhered to, its not going to be "Remeber The Titans" or even "Varsity Blues"/"The Program"
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted October 22, 2004 I had no intention of seeing this flick anyway, but now I will DEFINATELY never lay my eyes upon it. Because someone chopblocked someone else in a game? That's stupid. Why should the fact that Odessa may not be the greatest high school ever make me not enjoy the movie. It's a movie- not a documentary. And a really good movie at that.
