CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 Moulton woman says she lost job for sporting Kerry sticker on car By Clyde L. Stancil DAILY Staff Writer [email protected] · 340-2443 MOULTON — Lynne Gobbell never imagined the cost of a John Kerry-John Edwards bumper sticker could run so high. DAILY Photo by Clyde Stancil Lynne Gobbell said her boss fired her last week because of the Kerry-Edwards campaign sticker on the back of her car. Gobbell of Moulton didn't pay a cent for the sticker that she proudly displays on the rear windshield of her Chevrolet Lumina, but said it cost her job at a local factory after it angered her boss, Phil Geddes. Geddes, a Decatur bankruptcy attorney, owns Enviromate, a cellulose insulation company in Moulton. Geddes did not return phone calls from THE DAILY about the alleged Thursday firing. Gobbell said she consulted a lawyer, but then changed her mind about going to see him. She said she has cried about the incident and must do without income for three weeks while the state unemployment commission decides if she is eligible for compensation. Gobbell said she was averaging 50 to 60 hours a week on the plant's bagging machine. "The lady there (at the unemployment commission) said that she has never heard of a firing like this before," Gobbell said. Gobbell gave this account: "We were going back to work from break, and my manager told me that Phil said to remove the sticker off my car or I was fired," she said. "I told him that Phil couldn't tell me who to vote for. He said, 'Go tell him.' " She went to Geddes' office, knocked on the door and entered on his orders. "Phil and another man who works there were there," she said. "I asked him if he said to remove the sticker and he said, 'Yes, I did.' I told him he couldn't tell me who to vote for. When I told him that, he told me, 'I own this place.' I told him he still couldn't tell me who to vote for." Gobbell said Geddes told her to "get out of here." "I asked him if I was fired and he told me he was thinking about it," she said. "I said, 'Well, am I fired?' He hollered and said, 'Get out of here and shut the door.' " She said her manager was standing in another room and she asked him if that meant for her to go back to work or go home. The manager told her to go back to work, but he came back a few minutes later and said, " 'I reckon you're fired. You could either work for him or John Kerry,' " Gobbell said. "I took off my gloves and threw them in the garbage and left," Gobbell said. Though she is unemployed and uncertain if she will get her job back, Gobbell said, she doesn't regret her decision to keep the sticker on her windshield. "I would like to find another job, but I would take that job back because I need to work," she said. "It upset me and made me mad that he could put a letter in my check expressing his (political) opinion, but I can't put something on my car expressing mine." She was referring to a flier that she said Geddes placed in employee envelopes to remind them of the positive impact that President Bush's policies have had on them. An employee at the plant who would not identify himself confirmed the contents of the letter. Gobbell provided a copy of the flier. It says: "Just so you will know, because of the Bush tax (cut): # I was able to buy the new Hammer Mill # I was able to finance our receivables # I was able to get the new CAT skid steer # I was able to get the wire cutter # I was able to give you a job" It further says: "You got the benefit of the Bush tax cut. Everyone did." Leave feedback on this or another story. THE DECATUR DAILY 201 1st Ave. SE P.O. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 This is more of a demostration that the American Public needs a hobby. If you fire someone for a Kerry sticker or spit on someone for supporting Bush, you need to do something constructive with your time that doesn't involve acting like a jackass. In the words of Lewis Black, if you need to be part of a team that badly then join a bowling league.

Guest Cerebus Report post Posted October 7, 2004 My wife's car got keyed thanks to the Bush-Cheney sticker I put on it so I feel this woman's pain. Oh yeah, there's other stuff like that going too.
CheesalaIsGood 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 While it is very easy to play "King of Pain" , people are shitty to each other regardless of their political affiliation. Good thing we have "the rule of law" to protect us.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 I wore a Bush/Cheney and Kerry/Edwards button one day at the same time. Confused the hell out of people. I wanted to see someones head explode like in Scanners. No luck. There has been random acts of stupidity from both sides. I'm not stunned by this at all and I wouldn't be surprised if someone wasn't fired/ harassed badly at work for support Bush either. Neither side is good anymore. Both sides are now the cornerstones for pure evil and hate.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 Oh, come on 2Gold...these are random acts, I dont think the majorities of either campaign's supporters are acting like this.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 Well I guess I could mention the police officer on O'Reilly that was ordered to take his Bush sign down in his car (personal car, not work car) while other co-workers had Kerry signs displayed in their cars. I guess I could also mention the teacher that got "fired" (administrators said she wasn't, but stories vary) for having a picture of Bush, among other Presidents, in her classroom, even though it wasn't, according to the teacher, meant to be political -- some parents wanted Kerry on the board, even though he wasn't, like, you know, PRESIDENT. I guess I could, but I wont...
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 Sure as hell are acting like jackasses around me. My best friend is a die hard crazy Democrat and I can't talk to him right now without getting into an argument if I don't call Bush the devil. Obviously there are still some good people left in each party, but they are slowly getting pushed into the background since if you aren't 100% with your party then you are against it. Like two big ass kliqs from hell.

Well, if hippies love guns, meat and don't mind cutting down a tree if it's in my way while driving a big V8 truck then....well ok, I'm a hippie. Peace or something, hell if I know. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted October 7, 2004 Im a libertarian volunteer for Kerry and Feingold, so Im seeing a wide range of retardation... The nuttys on the left are calling Bush a new Hitler, shouting at me for being libertarian, etc... The crazies on the right are saying that the gays and blacks will take over, Kerry is a robot cheater, and calling me a 'queer Russian'... But these are the handicapped exceptions - Most people I have encountered are pretty thoughtful people, on both sides.

I guess I could, but I wont... As a civil servant, I can safely say that the cop had no leg to stand on about keeping his sign in his car. State and federal employees aren't allowed to display signs and/or stickers for or against a certain candidate. Even if this guy is a city cop, chances are that there's a "political activism" clause in his job description that says he's not allowed to take a stand that could be construed as government support or opposition to a candidate. If the other employees had Kerry signs and stickers in their cars, they should have been told to remove it or face disciplinary action.
teke184 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2004 Oh, come on 2Gold...these are random acts, I dont think the majorities of either campaign's supporters are acting like this. I take it you didn't read the articles on how AFL-CIO members across the nation were invading Bush-Cheney campaign HQs and causing havoc. The invasions were coordinated in swing-states such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Florida, so that blows the "isolated incident" argument out of the water. http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=70180 http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/i...lo_wkmg/2400611
Guest MikeSC Report post Posted October 8, 2004 There's also a complaint with John Ashcroft about the apparent co-ordinated effort. The AFL-CIO boasting about it on their website was just dumb. -=Mike

teke184 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2004 Millions of people are supporting either candidate...hundreds are being stupid and ridiculous...see the difference? The difference is that there is a national organization encouraging this behavior. The AFL-CIO better hope that Kerry wins or otherwise Bush, Cheney, and Ashcroft will go out of their way to legally fuck over the union's leadership

State and federal employees aren't allowed to display signs and/or stickers for or against a certain candidate. Really? In your personal car, too? The argument on O'Reilly was mostly he was told to take his down but other pro-Kerry signs were allowed to be displayed in co-worker cars. I don't think he would have had a problem taking his down if everyone had to. This reminds me of a time back in my college days when I was manning some hippie booth for some hippie club I was in and across from me was some socialist group that had this big-ass sign with all the usual liberal garbage. This was right after the first officer got acquitted in the Johnny Gammage case, and these chicks had a sign that said "Jail the cops who killed Johnny Gammag." Well, this pissed me off so I got three sheets of paper, taped them together and wrote in a marker "Vojtas acquitted: One down three to go." Within 20 mintues I was being told by an administrator to take my sign down. When the smoke cleared I took mine down if only the hippie bitches took theirs down, too. Just felt like telling that story -- don't know why...

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 8, 2004 This is really quite silly. It's one thing to not like someone for their personal beliefs, but you can't really hold it against them. I wonder how some of the crazy liberals would feel about this ENORMOUS banner over this car dealership just off the freeway here in Miami that says "VIVA BUSH/CHENEY 2004". I mean, it's a hell of a political advertisement, I've never seen anything like it before.

teke184 0 Report post Posted October 8, 2004 Before I was a civil servant, I used to have a "Put a Brain in the White House" magnetic bumper sticker featuring Brain of "Pinky and the Brain". Not quite up to Cthulu, but still pretty cool.
