NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 I just saw the replay yesterday, and DAAAAAAMN, that was a fight. Tito was the superior fighter, but Mayorga had the heart of a warrior. Tito looks like a better fighter then when he "retired" and he took a risk by fighting a guy like Mayorga his first fight back. I hope he takes a rematch against Hopkins rather then a rematch vs. De La Hoya(who doesn't deserve one at this point, anyway).
OldSchoolWrestling 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2004 That was quite an ass-whipping he took. Mayorga putting his gloves down early and letting Tito blast off on him to show his toughness ended up hurting him. He's got a lot of heart, just not enough brains. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2004 Well letting your opponent hit you is just a trick tactic, because often you can absorb LOTS of punishment, when you see it coming. So that really means nothing.
Justice 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2004 Agreed. He made it to 8, right? I couldn't believe it after the pummelling he took in the later rounds.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2004 Its never a good idea to let a man of Trinidads caliber punch you though... The man was the first to ko Vargas, Reid, Joppy, etc etc...Mayorga was too cocky, Tito is just way too good. And Trinidad's chin is clearly not nearly as soft as anyone has ever claimed. I am kind of dissapointed that Vargas has dissapeared. I figured he had a bright future ahead of him. I cheered for Tito when he fought Vargas, but Vargas seemed to have good skills, he was just a young punk that needed to be taught a lesson. Of course going on to lose to De La Hoya probably didn't help his ego. On a sidenote: Did Prince Naseem Hamed officially retire or did he just dissapear too? Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2004 Finally saw this fight. Good shit. Tito is back. Mayorga went out like a champ. I loved it. Crowd ate the shit up with a spoon. WWE wishes they could get crowd heat like this fight generated.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 12, 2004 Mayorga was outgunned, and didn't fight a very smart fight. Guy's got power and balls to spare, he just got outboxed and consequentially whipped.

Vargas fought a comeback fight on HBO last year in the summer, winning by ko...he lookd Very good. He has since been injured and continue to deal with personal issues...but he will be back. Hamed hasnt fully retired, but hes only fought once since getting whipped by Barerra in '01...I dont expect to see him back any time soon.

Actually he beat Manuel Calvo after his Barrera fight. Yes, that would be the one fight that I mentioned in that post... Calvo, a complete bum, was frowned upon by HBO, and their unwillingness to allow Hamed to continue fighting losers like that is one of the many reasons why hes not fighting these days. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2004 Anyone know what Bernard Hopkins & Antonio Tarver are looking into next? I know for Tarver his option for #3 against RJJ pretty much ended, or severely went down in pocket money after RJJ got knocked out last month.

I know for Tarver his option for #3 against RJJ pretty much ended, or severely went down in pocket money after RJJ got knocked out last month. No word yet on Hopkins... But Tarver will be defending against #1 Contender Paul Briggs, December18 on Hbo. Briggs is 23-1, his only loss coming by 3rd round ko in his second fight back in 1997. His biggest wins have come against RJJ-victim Glen Kelly (ko 4), former world champion Jorge Castro (W 10), and unanimous decisions in title-eliminators against Jesus Ruiz and Stipe Drews. Could be a pretty good matchup. -credit Boxrec.com

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2004 Barerra kicking the shit out of Hamed was one of my favorite boxing moments. Me to at the time, but honestly if I knew it was going to lead to Naseem's dissapearing, I'd say it wasn't worth it. I mean Barerra outboxed him, but he didn't beat him up so badly that it should cause shock and embarrasment, he shouldn't have felt SO BAD that he just vanished. I think Hopkins is holding out for one more HUGE FIGHT, and then he is going to retire either way.
