Guest MikeSC Report post Posted October 13, 2004 Maybe the Republican in me is getting ahold of my rationality. For that I apologize. But seriously, does anyone believe Bush doing something similar wouldn't be plastered EVERYWHERE? Bush doing nothing similar still got him a CBS story about Bush possibly wanting a draft. It's not like the story DIDN'T get considerable story --- provided one views a story on CBS as being something one can take seriously. -=Mike

But seriously, does anyone believe Bush doing something similar wouldn't be plastered EVERYWHERE? I dont think so...if it were military service that was required maybe... Then again, I might be wrong...Ive met just as many thickheaded-wrong liberals this season as I have consevatives during my experiences on the campaign trail. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2004 I dunno. Making kids do 20 hours at the animal shelter or local library is fine by me. We had to do 40 to graduate at my school. Pretty much a non-issue if either candidate chose to endorse it. I'm sure some nuts would go crazy about it, but since they're not, well, who cares?
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2004 four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service. That's what the article says. Community service in high school? Don't care, really. But what is this "national service?" Picking up trash on the roadsides or working at an animal shelter for 2 years gets you a free ride to college? I doubt it's that simple. The GI Bill and things like it work because the government gets something out of you for what they give you in return. There's no benefit to the government if this two years of "national service" is just the standard community service crap. If anything, a bunch of two-year volunteers will probably put people out of work, which will strain the economy that would already be dealing with free college for all.
