Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Boston Mayor Might Ban Alcohol During World Series College Student Was Killed After Riots Following Victory Over Yankees By GREG SUKIENNIK, AP BOSTON (Oct. 22) -- Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said he was considering banning alcohol sales near Fenway Park during the World Series, following rowdy celebrations of the Red Sox's league championship that turned deadly when a police officer shot a projectile into a crowd. Menino planned to meet with bar and nightclub owners on Friday and also said he would press universities to expel students found guilty of criminal conduct in the melee. "Since people won't accept responsibility, I, as mayor, will take it into my own hands," Menino said. Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove, 21, died on Thursday, hours after being hit in the eye with what was designed to be a non-lethal projectile that would douse the target with a pepper-like spray. Her father expressed outrage at the city's response to her death. Witnesses said Snelgrove was standing outside the ballpark when a reveler threw a bottle at a mounted police officer. Another officer fired the plastic, pepper-spray filled balls into the crowd, hitting Snelgrove. Fifteen other people, including a police officer, suffered minor injuries in Boston's Kenmore Square neighborhood near Fenway Park after thousands of baseball fans spilled onto the streets to celebrate the Red Sox triumph on Wednesday night at New York's Yankee Stadium. Small fires were set and fights broke out. Boston police reported eight arrests, mostly for disorderly conduct. Menino said that to avoid a repeat of the rowdiness in his city, he was considering imposing the alcohol-sales ban through a state law never before used in Boston. The law lets him ban sale or distribution of alcohol "in cases of riot or great public excitement." He said he may also ask bar and restaurant operators not to let television stations broadcast live scenes from inside their establishments during games. Officials said the projectiles are not supposed to be aimed at people's faces, and Police Commissioner Kathleen O'Toole said she would "firmly and emphatically accept responsibilities for any errors." But, she continued, "I also condemn in the harshest words possible the actions of the punks (Wednesday) night who turned our city's victory into an opportunity for violence and mindless destruction." The student's father, Rick Snelgrove, said angrily that she did nothing wrong. Standing outside the family home, he held up a photograph of his smiling daughter. "What happened to her should not happen to any American citizen going to any type of game, no matter what," he said. "She loved the Red Sox. She went in to celebrate with friends. She was a bystander. She was out of the way, but she still got shot. Awful things happen to good people. My daughter was an exceptional person." City officials had announced there would be a heavy police presence in Kenmore Square for the history-making victory by the Red Sox, who came back from a three games to none deficit to advance to the World Series. The city had been caught understaffed when riots broke out after the New England Patriots' Super Bowl win on Feb. 1, when one person was killed and another critically injured by a vehicle that plowed into revelers. 10/22/04 11:54 EDT So wait.. a fan killed by a projectile fired by the POLICE (which was SUPPOSED to be non-lethal) is going to cause the city to ban alcohol? 1. Baseball and alcohol go together like peanut butter and jelly. How could anyone watch without it? Especially since this series is going to be a letdown following the drama of both LCS's 2. How could you place the blame on the people rioting for her death when the cause was quite evidently the police officer shooting projectiles in the crowd, completely ignoring what a blow to the face could do? This is silly. 3. You Bostonians need to learn how to riot better. Topple over some police cars or something next time.

Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye 0 Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Nowhere in that article does it say anything about her rioting, just her being there. It's entirely possible that she was just there caught up trying to get out of a large group of people.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted October 22, 2004 Perhaps she was telling everyone to simmer down. Christ, this is the first time anyone in the news has used the word "riot" Everyone else calls her an innocent bystander in a mild celebration where things somehow (but not due to the people, good lord no) got set on fire. They're showing her a little bit of respest by not flat out calling her a fool.

Last I heard it really was a case she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. People who start riots and die may be idiots or morons, but sometimes you do have the few who are just there when it all breaks down and don't have time to get away. This really seems like the case with her.
MrRant 0 Report post Posted October 22, 2004 I doubt the cop aimed it at her face specifically and said "Take it bitch" while simulating a cum shot to the eye. It was an accident.

Yes, she just happened to be outside of Fenway Park at 11-whatever PM after a Red Sox win. Maybe she was walking the dog.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted October 22, 2004 I have little sympathy for her. The cops said it was zero tolerence and if you're out on a zero tolerance night like she was you're just asking for trouble. It's an unfortunate accident but a completely avoidable one. This stuff happens on the Ohio State campus 3 or 4 times a year.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted October 23, 2004 Celebrating out on the street doesn't make you a rioter. Not everyone in the vicinity of a riot is a rioter. And celebrating a key win is not punishable by death. If anyone's an idiot, its the Boston police, who can't break up a riot without killing people, apparently. JangoFett4Hire 0 Report post Posted October 23, 2004 She was off to the side, with friends near a sausage cart. Someone behind her threw a bottle at the mounted police, the horses got spooked and they fire the non-lethal (sic) pellets at Snelgrove and essentially ended her life on Landesdowne Street. The Boston Herald, without even a hint of class, published photos of the poor girl dying, with blood streaming from her eye socket and nose. This whole episode has really bothered me. Frigging drunk idiots, most of whom aren't even native New Englanders creating chaos for an event they really have no appreciation for. I bet most of the fucks couldn't even tell you who is the centerfielder for the Sox.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted October 23, 2004 Celebrating out on the street doesn't make you a rioter. Not everyone in the vicinity of a riot is a rioter. Then celebrating in the middle of a riot makes you an asshole with zero common sense whatsoever. If anyone's an idiot, its the Boston police, who can't break up a riot without killing people, apparently. Shit happens.

I think simply the circumstances will temper emotions next time, with no further legislation needed. In their defense, riots after sporting events are hardly rare --- and it's impossible to imagine that alcohol is not a definite contributing factor. -=Mike

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted October 23, 2004 It's just another example of God weeding out the idiots. No need to punish everyone. I think you were really out of line on this one. I just don't happen to have a lot of sympathy for rioters or "people celebrating in the middle" of a riot or whatever her excuse was. You want to do something incredibly stupid? Well, there's a chance bad things will happen.
the max 0 Report post Posted October 23, 2004 So because she was out with her friends having a good time, god "weeded" her out? Dazzling vindication there. I guess should I be out with my girlfriend and a crazed madman comes into the restaurant and kills us both, we "deserve" it right? I mean, we're out of the house, and kind of near the riot, right? We should be boarded up in our houses contemplating ways for the Yankees to get back on track, god forbid people have a good time, right? Pull thy stick from your ass and realize that she was not inciting anything, she was THERE. This happens in life and sadly, sometimes death as well. She didn't do anything but try to enjoy herself and for that, she deserves to die because she's within a few blocks of a riot? Fuck you. Fuck you, you insensitive prick. She wasn't "celebrating in the middle of a riot" you fucking boob. She was out with friends. God fucking forbid.

Guest Nanks Report post Posted October 23, 2004 I'll never understand this idea of "celebrating" a victory by your sporting team by destroying shit, beating people up and setting things on fire. When my team/s win big games I go to the pub with my mates and celebrate, we don't roam the streets in a horde like crazy vandals. Anglesault, you really are a fucking nutbar. If God was "weeding out the idiots" how did he manage to miss the dozens of people around this seemingly innocent chick who were punching on and turning over cars??? The idea that the police force isn't being absolutely raped in the media over this is just as horrifying as the idea of watching baseball sober.

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted October 23, 2004 So because she was out with her friends having a good time, god "weeded" her out? That was a poor choice of words. I do apologize for that. And I am a jaded person and a little crazy. But I just don't understand why she was out there when she had to know this shit (the riot) was going to happen right where she was (It's not like she picked some obscure corner of the city) and why she didn't fucking hightail it out of there when the shit hit the fan. JustJoe2k5 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2004 I always hate idiot fans rioting after a win or loss, and the sad thing is fatalities seem to happen more when a certain team wins than when it loses. I say if you need alcohol to get through a playoff game then maybe you're not enough of a fan to be there in the first place.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted October 24, 2004 Wow, so Anglesault's a real piece of shit. Maybe I am. Maybe I've just had the story misrepresented to me. But from every news report I've heard, the girl more or less knowingly put herself in a position where bad things were going to happen. It's sad that she died, but a little bit of common sense would have prevented it.
