Florida fires Ron Zook and coaching staff

Recommended Posts

That was quick.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1908871

The Florida Gators have fired third-year football coach Ron Zook and his staff, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported Monday.

Ron Zook and the Gators fell to 4-3 on Saturday.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley will meet with members of the team this afternoon and then announce that Zook and his staff will coach the team for the remainder of the season, Herbstreit reported.

The firing comes on the heels of the Gators' 38-31 loss Saturday to Mississippi State, the worst team in the SEC.

The Gators are 4-3 this season, 20-13 overall under Zook.

His teams haven't had the swagger of those under his predecessor Steve Spurrier, who lost only six home games in 12 years and won a national championship.

When asked about his future Sunday, Zook focused on next Saturday.

"I just have to worry about this next game right now," Zook said. "That's all I have any control over."

So he's going to coach them for the rest of the year? If my bosses told me I was fired but had to work for another 3 months I'd tell em to fuck themselves. Either that or I'd do the shittiest job possible (after finding another one of course).

Why the hell would he agree to finish the season? That just seems really stupid.

Audition for another job. If he can get Florida to a Bowl game, that looks really good for him when he interviews for future jobs.

Other than that, no reason.

He quits now and the last thing on his coaching info is "lost to Mississippi State"

They're going to get skunked by Georgia and go .500...that's pitiful for them.

He already took an elite school and made them significantly less elite.

As the old saying goes, it's hard to polish a turd.

...Who'd kill to see Bill Callahan's resume

"Took long-time NFL power, Oakland Raiders --- made them suck

Took over long-time college powerhouse Nebraska --- made them suck"

That's not fair to Callahan, he didn't have a lot of time to insitute his system. He's trying to make Nebraska a passing school and right now he doesn't have a quarterback who was brought in for his passing ability.

After he fails next year, which he probably will, then the blame falls at his feet.

Umm, they lost by 60 to Texas Tech. That is a rancid beaver draped around the neck of Callahan.

Nebraska, while not great, was decent last season.

Again, he's trying to pass the ball with an option QB.

That's the problem.

The defense, I have nothing on that. Unless he changed that system as well, no clue.

I dislike Nebraska, but the guy should be given at least a year to get a passing QB before saying he has failed.

I disagree. They threw a coach under the bus to get this guy. Why should they have taken a step back with a new coach and a new system? They could've not fired anyone and probably have won 8 games this year and not given up 70 to Texas Tech. It's going to take forever to get a west coast offense going for Nebraska.

Um, this isn't a step back. This is a French military retreat. It's NUMEROUS steps back. They've gone from above-average to laughingstock -- and in a real weak Big XII, to boot.

Out or curiousity Slayer, where is the Milhouse quote in your sig picture from?

I think Tyson said it in one his insane rants. But I'm not 100% sure.

Is Miss St. really the worst team in the SEC? Personally I think Kentucky is, but we shall see when that epic matchup unfolds. Hell UK lost 20-3 to Florida, only win was against a clueless IU team.

Anyway, who didn't see this coming? Quite a bit of the Gator fanbase wanted Zook gone from the get go.

Fucking ouch. Gator nation didn't even wait till the end of the year. To get axed so quickly means that Zook was on much thinner ice than anyone really thought even before the Mississippi State game.

Miss State's win over Florida gives me hope that Kentucky will only win one game this year.

I don't recall seeing Miss State play this year, but we'll find out this Saturday who really is the worst SEC team when the Bulldogs host the Wildcats. It makes me wish that the game would be broadcast just to see how bad the two teams are.

What about Vanderbilt?  Aren't they traditionally the worst or are they have a less crappy year this year?

Yeah, Vanderbilt is the SEC's jobber supreme. Kentucky is more like a curtain jerker.

As for Zook, it was bound to happen. Here's hoping they get another asshole like Spurrier (who's from my hometown) that will give me more reason to hate Florida.

If anybody needs to go from Nebraska it's Steve Pederson.

I mean, no offense to some Pitt fans (hint hint) around here but dude, Pitt was a freaking jobber while you were the AD there. Now you're coming and telling NEBRASKA how to do football?

I mean hell what's next, Jim Sterk leaves Wazzu for Miami tomorrow and says 'OK boys this is how we're gonna run our football program'?

As for Zook, yeah it was a mistake but who the hell was Florida supposed to hire at the time? George O'Leary? Rick Neuheisel?

My guess is it's something Tyson once said and it was put under the pic of Tyson from the MTPO game, but someone upped the ante later by putting Milhouse in there

It was too good to pass up, though its time in my sig is soon to pass

Well Baylor did beat Colorado last year, so theoretically that should keep them out of worst 1-A all time status

Here's three more contenders for Worst I-A Program Ever: Rutgers, Duke, and Temple.

As for Mississippi State, they'd be the worst team in the SEC right now if they hadn't beaten Florida... Their only other win was over Tulane which, UAB win non-withstanding, is one of the worst I-A mid-major programs right now. They'd also lost to MAINE, a friggin' I-AA team.

Kentucky's pretty bad too, losing to the University of Ohio amongst others, but Miss State is still worse IMHO.

Vanderbilt's a traditional patsy but they've actually won 3-4 games this year.

Eastern Michigan, who not only lost to Idaho but gave up 45 to them should get a nod.

And other than that, Idaho's pretty shitty. That they have one win in conference proves how pathetic the Sun Belt is this year. I so look forward to the Vandals going 0-8 in the WAC next year.............

So who does Florida go after?

Steve Spurrier or Bob Stoops? They've already gone after Stoops once and I know any program would love to have him and Florida does want him.

But Spurrier is doing nothing right now...

I tend to ignore most of the Mountain West, MAC, WAC, and Sun Belt intentionally for these purposes.

Mainly, that's because half of the teams are close to being forced back to I-AA status and most of the other half doesn't have the resources to compete year-in year-out with even the mid-level teams from the Big 5 conferences (SEC, Pac 10, Big 10, Big 12, ACC).

NOTE- Conference USA is not listed above because it's on par with the Big East right now, as teams like Southern Miss, Louisville, Memphis, UAB, and TCU are some of the better mid-major teams each year.
