And So it Begins

Take this with a grain of salt as its coming from somebody on the ESPN boards, but the Red Sox may have resigned Jason Varitek.

Usually I don't believe anybody there, but this person has some inside source. Said person called the Schilling trade, Burks signing, Wells signing, and Wade Miller signing before they were even blips on the radar. The person shows up, makes a single sentence statement on what's about to occur and then leaves. Next day its usually made publicly official.

Not that Newsday is any more credible than that Mnice guy from the ESPN boards...but they are reporting the deal is done now.

4 year 40 mil.

No.

The Red Sox will never give anyone a NT clause as long as Manny, Nixon, Ortiz, etc. are on the team because they, and some others i'm sure, have clauses in their contracts that say if another player gets one...they ALL get one.

Although according to the Newsday article there is some "creative language" in the contract to supplement the lack of the official No Trade clause.

Mnice is obviously working inside the Red Sox in one shape or form. To come out with the David Wells thing while he wasn't even being talked about and to say the Wade Miller signing was done about 12hrs before it was reported got me to believe.

Who's Victor Martinez's agent? you know he's counting the $$$ right now after seeing that Varitek deal.....

He's not even close to Free Agency right now. He's got at least another 2 years where Cleveland owns his rights.

Even so, he should be able to get substantially more than 10 million a season based on Tek's contract. He had better defensive numbers last year and is a much better hitter.

If he makes it to Free Agency without being struck by injuries then maybe so. However he's already had knee and hamstring problems so maybe by the time he reaches free agency he'll be more of a DH.

Man, the Sox are making moves virtually everyday. And they didn't really lose a whole lot. Are they going to be the odd-on favs to win the AL East in 2005?

And sorry to keep harping, but the Cubs seem to truly be the only contending team doing nothing at all. Keeping Nomar was a big move that I think got lost in the shuffle of other MLB happenings, but I wish they'd do something to address issues that plagued them in 2004. This means the bullpen and the hitting. They still need a credible leadoff man, because Corey Patterson isn't the answer. Even Stoney predicted he'll be a three or four guy down the road.

They moved Sarge to first base coaching duties, so hopefully the hitting will come together in 2005. I'm still skeptical, but then again, we are talking about the Cubs.

I'm with you completely, man, the Cubs best get steppin'. Jason Dubois is a bench player for 2005, platoon at best. He is not the full-time solution in left field. We need a bench, we need a bullpen, we're getting neither, and time is running out.

Also, we need Carlos Beltran.

Magglio Ordonez is still available. Cubs should grab him.

Red Sox will trade you Byung-Hyung Kim to be your closer if ya want!

Yanks made a lot of deals.

Stanton, F-Rod, Pavano, Wright, Wolmack, plus maybe Beltran and RJ.

FUCK

How are the repairs on Wrigley Field coming? Will we see anything new at the park in 2005? -- Craig F., Rochester, N.Y.

There are crews currently working on the ballpark. A "new" thing that will be obvious to those in the bleachers will be the rotating advertising board behind home plate. It's a sign of the times.

They were talking about that this past summer. Not surprised at all that the organization is looking for yet another outlet to profit from, while doing very little in the way of focusing on the actual team.

And I think the Yanks' moves are a lot riskier than the ones the Sox made. Wright is not worth anything close to the contract he got; Womack is going to show you quick enough that 2004 was his last hurrah, and I'm not convinced that Carl Pavano was rightfully one of the hottest free agents this off season.

Wright wasn't going to settle for anything less. Benson fucked everything up.

And about Wolmack. As long as he plays good D, and can atleast do SOMETHING offensivley, he'll be fine.

Just because he wouldn't settle for anything less doesn't mean it was okay to give in to him.

Womack is injury prone and I'd expect him to be much like Lofton was for you guys last season.

I'm happy about the additions of F-Rod and Stanton, very happy about keeping Sturtze. F-Rod should split time with Flash as the primary setup man, and if Torre/Stottlemeyer are smart about using Stanton he will be good in a marginal role. I wouldn't count on him to carry many innings, but as a situational/matchup guy he should be fine.

Pavano, I'm not completely sold on him yet, but I like his makeup and style, and he's probably an upgrade on Lieber due to less wear and tear on the arm. I was pretty disapointed to see Lieber go though, and I would have been perfectly content to keep him and let Pavano go elsewhere. Time will tell.....

I don't like the Wright move, and I think he's looking at a +4 ERA. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, I hope so, but I don't think he's a NYC kind of guy.

Womack I like, conditional on him having a part-time role. I don't want him out there every day, and I really think we should have kept Miguel Cairo to split time with him. I have to think we're adding another 2B at some point, I'd target Hairston except it's doubtful Baltimore moves him in division.

Al, do you think Sturtze will be able to keep up his 2nd have success, or was it just a hot streak?

Hot streak. Sturtze was awful through August. His streak of good pitching consisted solely of 16 good innings in September. Remember in the postseason Sturtze still walked five batters in six innings, and he posted a 6.75 ERA in the divisional series. Sturtze is 34, and carries a career ERA of 5.23. It is HIGHLY unlikely that a single good month represents a new standard of excellence for a pitcher, particularly at that point in his career.

Talk about over paying

According to ESPN.com, David Eckstein received a three-year, $10.25 million contract from the Cardinals.

He gets a $250,000 signing bonus and salaries of $2.25 million, $3.25 million and $4.5 million.
