Rob E Dangerously Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 http://www.thewmurchannel.com/politics/3882084/detail.html Tradition Prevails In Dixville North, Hart's Location Voting And, Yes, The Decision Is Tied -- At Least In Hart's Location POSTED: 12:24 am EST November 2, 2004 UPDATED: 12:34 am EST November 2, 2004 HART'S LOCATION, N.H. -- President Bush and John Kerry each received 15 votes in the nation's initial votes for president just after midnight Tuesday. Ralph Nader received one vote. The first vote came from Hart's Location. The 26 registered voters in Dixville Notch were still were casting votes shortly after midnight. The communities since 1948 sporadically have been taking advantage of a state law that allows communities to close polls early if all registered voters have voted. In 2000, both mountain hamlets chose President Bush over Democrat Al Gore. In Hart's Location, Bush won 17-13. In Dixville Notch, about 50 miles to the north, Bush had 21, Gore five and Ralph Nader one vote. By state law, polls must be open between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. But nothing prevents a town from opening the polls earlier, and closing after all potential voters have cast ballots. Hart's Location began doing just that in 1948 because nearly everyone in town worked for the railroad and many had to be at work before normal voting hours. Dixville followed in 1960. Hart's Location residents traditionally cast their ballots at the Notchland Inn, but this year voting was moved to the new town hall. National media attention to these "first votes" began in 1952, when the state let voters in the state's earliest presidential primary vote for the candidates themselves rather than delegates to the national party conventions. The Republican primary made news that year because Gen. Dwight Eisenhower upset party favorite Robert A. Taft. Small towns including Hart's Location, Millsfield and Waterville Valley soon were competing to cast the nation's first votes. Hart's Location dropped early voting in 1964, only to revive it 1996. Dixville didn't get into the act until 1960 for the general election. Reflecting the state's then-solid Republican leanings, Republican Richard Nixon beat Democrat John Kennedy, 9-0. Kennedy triumphed nationally in one of the closest presidential elections ever. Republicans still have the edge in both towns. Hart's Location has 10 Republicans, 15 independents and six Democrats. Dixville has 13 Republicans, 11 independents and two Democrats.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 What would promp someone to vote at midnight? I got to question how many of those people are even Sober.
Rob E Dangerously Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 The article answers all Dixville (13 Republicans, 11 Independents, 2 Democrats) goes 19-7 Bush Hart's Location (10 Republicans, 15 Independents, 6 Democrats) goes 15-15-1
Rob E Dangerously Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 CNN is kicking some ass with their election results page: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/ IMO.. of course

bob_barron Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 When do absentee ballots get counted anyway? I'm so excited- this is the first election I've ever voted in
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Since I'm in Ohio, I'm hoping one of the Bigwigs (cnn, fox or MsNBC) has their cameras at my Votingbooth. If I see one, I'll do the Orton Pose for my fellow TSMers.

Part of the reason for voting early is because some people in New Hampshire have this ego about being the first to do things. Which is why they must hate Iowa
teke184 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 When do absentee ballots get counted anyway? I'm so excited- this is the first election I've ever voted in Absentee ballots vary from state to state. Some states don't count them unless the election is within a small margin. Louisiana, AFAIK, counts absentee ballots immediately because the state Commissioner Of Elections is supposed to have them instead of the parish election boards like in Florida. The reason I know this is that the absentee ballots are always the first returns listed within the state and often contain votes for candidates that dropped out of the race a week or so prior to the election.
bob_barron Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Some states don't count them unless the election is within a small margin. That's bullshit. New York better not be one of them
Rob E Dangerously Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Some states don't count them unless the election is within a small margin. That's bullshit. New York better not be one of them You'd think they wouldn't throw out an entire ballot because one race was a blowout.
Styles Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Boy, I'm nervous about tommorow...what if I don't win. I'll be finished. I'll try to get some sleep and not think about it Dreaming... Voiceover: And John Kerry celebrates a resounding electoral victory and will now be making his acceptance speech As my first act as President, I will invite Osama Bin Laden to the Whitehouse to have a summit, so we can finally bring an end to our conflict, and do it without sending troops into a quagmire. My next act will be to eliminate the Department of Defense, replaced by a Department of Sensitivity and Peace to be run by a council of world... Oh man, looks like its back to Texas for me. I guess I'll never know what it would be like to serve a second term as President Quit yer bitchin', jackass. Grover Cleveland? What are you doing here?
Styles Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Exercising my right to vote in Colorado, of course. Anyway, when I lost to that no good son of a bitch Harrison, did I sit around a pout? Hell No! I came back and beat his bitch ass the next time. Wow, that must have taken a lot of courage to do, after losing the electoral vote the first time. Yeah, and I even won the popular vote the first time, but still lost the election! Isn't that some bullshit?! Uhhhh....right... Well, I must bid you farewell, as I step behind this magical curtain, to re-enter the afterlife. I'm late for my hottub date with Eleanor Rooselvelt and her mistress. Toodles Bye bye Grover Cleveland...
Styles Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Grover Cleveland? George, wake the fuck up, it's election day CBS news calls Dixville, New Hamshire, for John Kerry Bush: Grover Cleveland was right Dick...I'll just have to try again next time Cheney: Boy, I have no idea what you're talking about, but looks like something is up... Yeah, it looks like we got Dixville wrong. This is Dan Rather, CBS News saying America can go fuck themselves I'm so sorry about all of that. Continue on...
teke184 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Some states don't count them unless the election is within a small margin. That's bullshit. New York better not be one of them You'd think they wouldn't throw out an entire ballot because one race was a blowout. Let's just say that there's no standard way to handle this. There have been cases reported by election fraud researcher John Fund in which large piles of absentee ballots went uncounted because election officials said "Fuck it, I'm tired and going home" after counting the votes tallied in the voting booths and calling in their totals.
NYU Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I doubt Bush would have any idea who Grover Cleveland is upon first glance. Other than that, cute.
Rob E Dangerously Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I'm going to go to bed, and i'm planning to go vote around 7am CST
cbacon Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Loving the sig, Rob. And yeah, for the love all that is good in this world, go Kerry.

Lord of The Curry Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Curry for Kerry in 2004. You have no idea how bad G.W make you look. And I know you're not bad. You have things I like, such as Scarlett Johannsen, Samoa Joe and lots of cereals I can't get here in Canada. But get the monkey out. Kerry may suck but at least it's a different kind of suck.
