Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka

Recommended Posts

I like his quote on Freedom Fries.

You would. Considering the massive absence in your cranial cavity, I can buy it.

How old are you? About 27-28?

How can you justify renaming FUCKING French Fries as a valid stance against France for not joining the war? That is a tactic a 10 year old child would use, surely not the government of the world's most powerful country.

Who said I did? Doesn't make Depp less of an ignorant twit. The government did not do so, like it or not.

And about the woman.  My point isn't that you should've slapped her back, it is more or less that you are such a contemptible twit that she resorted to beating the shit out of you.  Its truly fitting.

Well, provided you don't suffer seizures, your right hand will never attack you.

But, hey, she was a massive druggie like you --- so you probably would identify with her.

I always liked this movies, seeing Johnny play Willie will definately be cool. And Tim Burton? He's usually pretty darned slick.

I like his movies just fine --- except for Benny & Joon and Edward Scissorhands. Those were nigh horrendous.

He just needs to shut the fuck up when he's not on camera.

nice Michael Caine quote

So the movie isn't necessarily a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory so much as a separate adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

I wonder how long until Hollywood has to resort to making even crappier remakes of crappy remakes.

Correct.

I'm interested in seeing this film because of the supposed faithful adaptation of the book, rather than a remake of the film (those are generally the only cases when I approve of remakes... what can I say, I am a very big supporter of "Writer's Rights").

I actually vividly remember reading the book as a child, then renting the movie noticing how different the movie was from the book. Oh the overall plot was there but... there were just sooo many differences. ALthough I appreciate the Gene Wilder film now, I absolutely want to see a faithful adaptation of CHARLIE and the Choclate Factory. Especially in the modern age where we are seeing more faithful adaptations of books/stories, like Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, etc.

"Charlie and the Chocolate" factory deserves it. The book is far more charming and interesting and tonal than the Gene Wilder movie.

This is a very Tim Burton project, and I think he'll excel here, and Johnny Depp is inspired casting. The guy's excellent in practically everything he does.

...on the other hand we could have another 'Planet of the Apes' (a film which is a piece of withering turd compared to the classic POTA film).

How can you hate Edward Scissorhands? it contains possibly the cheesiest linein movie history when Ryder says "Hold me", and Edwards looks at her and his hands and says "I can't." So bad that it's good. Just like Snitsky.

I never understand why people get so pissed off when films are remade. It's not as if they're erasing the original from existance, so if you don't enjoy the new one, just stick with the old one and forget the remake exists.

It's not really that different then plays getting different treatments over the years. Should we never bother acting out Hamlet on stage again because Shakespeare's dead?

It's being remade because Dahl wasn't happy with the original.  His name is credited as writing the screenplay, but in fact it was heavily rewritten after he did it originally.

Thing is, I cannot name a real problem with the original --- well, outside of the kids all sucking, but that's a problem with kid actors.

This isn't quite van Sant "Psycho" bad --- but lord, this is a bad idea.

Does anybody know what was changed from Dahl's original screenplay?

...A dark comedy Willy Wonka? Wow, this MIGHT be van Sant "Psycho" bad...

Ummm...right, well see the book was rather dark, and rather comedic, so using that logic the movie should be a dark comedy.

^ Yeah really. The idea that ANYONE would say 'Charlie and the Chocloate Factory' wouldn't work as a 'dark comedy' is hilarious...

The Book = dark comedy.

The Book = very good, and unquestionably better than the Disney-ish syrupy un-faithful Gene Wilder movie.

Hence, a movie, that is faithful to the book, with a good director who is perfectly suited to "dark comedies"... has quite a bit of chance of being good.

Normally I hate the idea of remakes but the combination of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp give me faith.

I think they can pull this off as Burton can certainly do dark and Depp excels as eccentric characters. Plus a new, more faithful, adaptation from the original Roald Dahl book should help to at least make the remake different to the original film version.

I couldn't care less about a remake.. it's Johnny Depp's casting that has me raising my eyebrow. Anyone who says that Walken wouldn't have been PERFECT for this role [age-wise and otherwise] needs their head checked.

My older brother actually liked it --- a lot. He told me how good it was, so I saw it and, suffice to say, impressed I was not.

That poster looks like A Clockwork Orange with Chocolate.

I am very scared and something tells me going the dark route does not exactly make this isn't a happy kids movie the first one was.

Plus Gene Wilder was beyond awesome as Wonka. I'm just wondering who Depp will channel for the role. From the poster, I'm hoping Malcolm McDowell

And Tim Burton needs to be slapped for "Planet of the Apes". Very very hard.

He also needs to be slapped for every time he casts his talentless wife-to-be, Helena Bonham Carter. Which, by the way, he has done for this very movie.

Put that on the front with Johnny Depp holding a child's dismembered head and we have box office hit.

Thank goodness she only has a small part though. Or was Charlie's mother a big character in the book?

I would say if they stayed faithful to the book 100%, she would be in the film maybe 10-15 minutes of the movie.

I'm worried about Burton making a Planet of the Apes type-remake more than I'm worried about Depp not filling Gene Wilder's shoes (which I highly doubt he can).

I've never read the book, so I honestly don't know what to expect, but I suppose I'll check it out when it hits home video.
