history of ECW DVD

Recommended Posts

The odd thing is that TNN produced some of ECW's best matches:

--I recall the Christmas and New Years Tanaka/Awesome matches where the title changed a couple of times. Those were brilliant matches that smoke anything the WWF or WCW was doing at that time.

--RVD vs. Jerry Lynn from the ECW Arena, where Lynn had hurt ribs but kept going. Personally I'd have changed the TV title here and moved RVD up to the world title, but such is life. I consider this the best RVD/Lynn match since it had the least amount of stalling, the best in match storytelling, and the most heated atmosphere.

--Mikey and Tajiri vs. The FBI. Insanely great match, but overshadowed in a great year for wrestling (2000)

Let me go on the record that this is the first time I've heard the word "fuck" repeatedly used on WWE programming.

You earn those TV-MAs, kids.

There should have been a bit of Tajiri on the discs. He wasn't a particularly huge star in ECW but he was well liked and was quite over. They could have put some stuff with him vs. Super Crazy (the clean shaven, blue trunk wearing Tajiri!), but I still insist on the Mikey/Tajiri vs. FBI match. That was just awesome...I bet 3/4 of the guys in that match had a career night. If I was to rate the match, I'd deduct maybe 1/4 of a star for the Sal E. run in, but that's still ****3/4.

It's certainly a better match than Raven/Stevie vs. the Pitbulls (the only ECW match Keith ever gave *****). Quality of work was so much better than that match, which was sloppy as hell really. It's a fun match from a story standpoint, not a work standpoint.

I know they ignored Justin Credible entirely. But Douglas vs Credible from Cyberslam 99 is one of ECW's top 5 matches ever. That should have made the disk.

I don't know if I would call it one of the top 5 matches ever in ECW, but I'll agree 100% that Credible/Douglas from Cyberslam is grossly underrated.

-they should have added the whole invasion angle they did in 1997. the debate between lawler and heyman is something i'd pay for.

-i would have loved to see those segments were taz shakes hands with kurt angle just after winning the gold. i read that at this point and time, angle thought ecw was too much for him.

-taz suplexing paul varleans (sp?) and knocking him out cold. you gotta understand that taz is only 5'7, if that. he suplexed paul over his head, dead weight and all and fucked up paul even more. on a side note, i saw paul last weekend and i still can't believe taz lifted this guy.

there are so many other ecw moments they could have put down. i used to work for rfvideo, all i would do was ecw. too many memories though.

What's with the love for Pitbulls vs. Raven/Stevie? I've watched that match a dozen times, and I can't see anything other than poor brawling by The Pitbulls and good work by Stevie and Raven, but not enough to cover the fact that The Pitbulls sucked.

And please tell me either one of the Tajiri/Crazy bouts are on your list, or maybe some Mikey/Tajiri tag bouts from the Tag Team title tourney in late 2000.

I've got the top five ECW on TNN matches as both Awesome/Tanaka's, Impact Players vs. Dreamer/Tanaka, Whipwreck/Tajiri vs. FBI vs. Dreamer/Lynn and either Whipwreck/Tajiri vs. FBI or RVD/Lynn from the first episode.

Maybe its the booking, like one of those matches where if you were into the storyline then you had more emotional involvment and the match seemed better. Personally, I'm biased and think any match with Raven in it is good at the very worst, but still...

I used to be that biased...but have you seen his matches from all of this year? Fucking terrible. The guy's completely let himself go.

And maybe if I was so into the angle(s) leading up to it I'd love it, but I didn't watch ECW then, and a great match is a great match no matter when you watch it.

I would go with:

Rey Mysterio vs Psicosis or Juvi match

Super Crazy vs Tajiri

Awesome vs Tanaka

Malenko vs Guerrero "Please don't go" chant match

Tajiri vs Psicosis from Hardcore tv

Here's my five.....

Malenko vs. Guerrero - Last time in ECW

Cactus Jack vs. Mikey Whipwreak - Big Ass Extreme Bash

Rob Van Dam vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - ECW TV Title Match

Michinoku Six Man Tag match - Barely Legal

Last pick would have to be either, Psychosis/Rey 2/3 falls or RVD/Lynn from Living Dangerously 1999.

I can't believe anyone would have the lame Living Dangerously RVD/Lynn match in a top 5. The ref almost gave Lynn the title in a TIME LIMIT DRAW. That's the single most retarded thing I've ever seen on ECW.

ECW had so many good matches it's tough to single a top 5. But I'll try. Bear in mind I haven't seen all the good Eddie/Dean stuff or much of Benoit's work in ECW.

RVD vs. Bigelow, TV title. I remember jumping literally out of my chair at this match when RVD did the insane flip into the 5th row. One of my fave matches ever and made me a big RVD fan.

Mikey and Tajiri vs. the FBI. The discs talk some about Mikey during his initial lucky jobber period, but he was a shitty wrestler then. He actually got quite good for a while with Tajiri, and this match from the neglected 2000 time period is a classic. Only the Sal E. run in knocks it from *****.

Tanaka/Awesome...there were a million of em, but I'll go with Awesome regaining the title on New Year's on TNN. Someone desperately needs to bust out a sit down powerbomb from the top again.

Eddie vs. Dean, 2/3 falls. Finish was a copout since both guys were leaving, but otherwise swank.

RVD vs. Jerry Lynn from TNN, Sept. 1999. This one is forgotten in the RVD/Lynn canon. The LD match had the dumbass booking I mentioned, HH had too much RVD stalling, but this match was inspired. It had the most heat (ECW Arena), the best in match story (Lynn's ribs hurt by Impact Players but he fights it out), etc. I do think the title should have changed here, but I guess Heyman thought RVD would look bad jobbing to Lynn with broken ribs.

______________________________

Stuff like Raven/Stevie vs. Pitbulls is a fun match, but it's sloppy as hell and I have to wonder why Keith would give it *****. I'd never give a match with so many run ins and so many fucked up spots *****.

Also, the Rey cruiser stuff isn't really notably better than his WCW work, so I can't really list that. It isn't really representative of ECW anyway.

I think Tanaka / Awesome is my favorite. The running powerbomb to the table outside off the ring with the back of Mike's head smacking right into concrete as the table of course easily gave away was just SICK!

But it has everything to do with the ECW idealogy. Paul E. said it in the begining that he wanted to make his mark in the business by changing from the old ways of the NWA to something that was rebellious. What else could be more rebellious in the world of wrestling than getting the small 5 foot 5 extreme luchadores over.

I'd say the problem with the HH match is after Lynn get's knocked out he never returns to full steam and only works at about half speed for the rest of the match and has to be carried by RVD unlike in any other match they had were it was pretty even.

I think even their guilty as charged 01 match-up is better then the one at HH99.

Can't recall the TNN match though.

no, I'm too broke to order TNA. Although I saw the battle royale one, and he was good in that.

I don't understand all the love for Raven/Richards vs. Pitbulls. It's alright, but too much of a clusterfuck at the end.

It was such great storytelling and very climatic for all these feuds and stories to come together and culminate in a single match. It's very effective at tying together everything that was going on and telling it all through a single match, and there's an intense hatred that permeates the match. It's not something that deserves to be looked at on its own in my opinion, I mean, it's good at best, but when you consider all the other factors involved it is the pinnacle of ECW and landmark.

The lack of love for Benoit/Snow from Double Tables is sickening. I understand that it was on the Benoit DVD, but I'd have much preferred it on here (they had a ton of stuff to work with for Benoit; it really wasn't that important). It's EASILY the smartest, most well worked match in ECW history (that I've seen). In fact, I'll watch it again shortly and comment further.

Still... sickening.
