Johan Santana wins Cy Young

Recommended Posts

Wow a bit of a shocker the writers actually, for the most part, got it right. Mariano Rivera finishing an overwhelming 3rd and Brad Radke receiving no 3rd place votes are the only quibbles

How could they not get it right? Santana was the most dominant pitcher in the AL especially in the second half. He had Schilling beat in every category except for wins, which he was one behind. Santana was by far and away the best pitcher in the AL this year. As a Yankee fan I tip my cap to him.

They didn't pick the best pitcher in the National League

Yeah, but Johnson and Clemens were a lot closer in stats and actual performance. Santana had maybe the best second half EVER and if you watched him pitch and you watched Schilling pitch it was CLEAR that Santana was without question the better player. 13-0 with an ERA under 2 in the second half, a LOT more K's than Schilling, and he only won like 1or 2 less games. I understand the Johnson/Clemens debate, but there's no debate in the AL.

But Johnson was clearly superior. And they weren't even that close.

Where can I find run-support stats? Clemens only lost 4 games and his team struggled for 1/2 the season. 14 losses is a lot, even on a bad team, for a Cy Young winner. I'd like to see what sort of run support the two of them had.

I think Johnson probably deserved to win too, but it was a lot closer than the Santana-Schilling race IMO, and obviously SOME of those voters, the same ones who voted for Santana, had a logical thought process behind voting for Clemens.

There can't be THAT many, as only AL towns vote for AL awards and vice versa. Writers in Minneapolis and Kansas City would have no say in Roger Clemens winning, I don't believe.

Well, I found the run support stats, 4.8 per 9 for Clemens, 4 per 9 for Johnson, which were incidently two of the lower totals for top pitchers, the only guys w/ less or negligible support being Sheets at 3.5, Odalis Perez at 3.3, Clement at 4, Oliver Perez at 4.1 and Al Leiter at 4.0. Compared to Clemens 4.8 Oswalt got 6. Go figure....

Even with Johan Santana clearly being the best this past season i expected this one to be closer with Schilling getting at least some 1st place votes. Pleasantly surprised they all got it right, a rarity when it comes to awards voting.

Closer than Schilling/Santana, perhaps, but not at all close. ERA, Ks, Hits, just about everything Johnson has a healthy lead over Clemens.

RJ wasn't going to win because of his W-L record, but don't say Clemens was "close", because he just wasn't.
