What the FUCK did I just see on CN?

Recommended Posts

Ok did anyone see that 10 minute short after Family Guy on Cartoon Network tonight? That really messed up Anime with the balding kid? I've been watching CN since it started and I can say I've never seen anything close to being as fucked up as that was.

Oh, that. They originally aired it on Sunday, when I first caught it. Thursdays are now rerun night, where they rerun premiere episodes from the past weekend.

Anyway, according to my digital guide, it was a part of Squidbillies, which is supposed to go a half-hour, again according to my guide. But now some are saying Squidbillies was a joke, based on the cheesy promo for it, and a release that came out, which said the creators were locked into a contract for 96 (!) episodes. Guess we'll have to wait until Sunday to see what the hell was going on.

At any rate, I didn't find it any more fucked up than any other AS original, if only because it really was a dead on parody of anime.

South Park did a much funnier parody of anime during the ninja star episode. And theirs made sense I might add.

Oh and awesome avatar.

The parody was called Perfect Hair Forever. Being an anime fan, I thought it was pretty funny, and extremely weird.

"Brenda...back up into my hands."

"They call me 'retarded hair guy.'"

And the ending song was cool as well.

True, South Park's was a lot funnier, and ultimately better.

However, although PHF certainly wasn't up to par with other AS shows, what it got right when it comes to anime was the perversion, two lead character stereotypes (dull and slightly fruity), as well as the non-sensical nature of sillier anime. They obviously weren't trying too hard to have it make sense, as a lot of anime and AS originals aren't coherent in the first place.

Explaining Milk Chan is asking the impossible.

Though I will say that it was highly disappointing. Maybe I need to give it a second viewing, but the dialogue, voice acting and pacing is pretty damn bad. I was expecting something a lot more random and fast paced, but instead got Milk just fucking around her house for too long.

I was confused as hell this past Sunday, when I turned on what was supposedly a Tivo'd recording of their new show "Squidbillies". Instead I got what seemed to be a feed pirated by lunatics. First we get the what ever that Perfect Hair thing was, followed by Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast from Hell.

Then after Adult Swim seemingly regained control of the feed...we go to the pure insanity of Super Milk Chan.

Not that I'm complaining...I enjoy being in a state of total bewilderment as I blankly stare at the tv while thinking "wtf is going on". However, after half of SMC I had to turn the channel...after 45 minutes I couldn't handle any more insanity.

To qoute SMC..."YOU DUMBASS!!!"

I just watched it. That was pretty much Williams Street proudly proclaiming how they've completely stopped caring about putting any effort into anything they write because it doesn't really matter anymore, wasn't it?

I agree with the discussion panel. Any apperance of Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past From the Future is an automatic A+. But the whole "OMFGITSSORANDOM~!LOLORZ~!!1" phase went out long ago. Take a look at ATHF. It's not exactly the sanest show on TV, but there are times when the characters do stuff that make more sense than in sitcoms (like when Carl wisely decides to sell his house to a satanist instead of getting raped by a giant gorilla).

Naw, that's what Sea Lab is for.

IMO:

SGC2C was WMS' development phase.

ATHF is their peak.

Brak Show/Harvey Birdman is mixed--sometimes really good, sometimes really lame.

Sea Lab once in a while gets decent eps, but on the whole it's terrible, especially since they lost Murphy.

Naturally, a lot of it probably has to do with doing all these shows at once. Yes, I know it isn't the same team doing all of them (basically, people hop from project to project, with no real fixed teams for each show), but it seems obvious where they put their effort and where they don't.

One episode in, I'm hooked to Super Milk Chan. Really messed up show, and hilarious too.

I actually disagree. I thought SGC2C was their best work.

ATHF had a great first season and certain episodes past that are very good (Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future and the one with all the previous villains in it for example), but as a whole it's pretty hit or miss at this point.

Brak Show was good for a while and then they changed Brak's mother's voice and for some reason that coincided with the show losing its luster.

Harvey Birdman I agree with you with. Kind of feels like they throw too many characters in and get bogged down in it.

I like Sealab the most, but that isn't very consistent either. *Shrugs.*

As far as the Brak show goes I would watch a show with just Father, Thundercleese, and Zorak. It's not a good idea when the main character of your show is the least liked of all of them (Sienfeld not withstanding).

Although I love ATHF, I'll be the first to admit several episodes fall flat (the symbiotic Japanese talking alien, the Universal Remonster etc.) but more are superior than not. Unfortunately, i can't say the same thing about Sealab after Captain Murphy left.

Well, I liked Brak more than that annoying character who sounded exactly like Brak who shows up in the later episodes, and British-Voice Mom (as opposed to American-Voice Mom), but that was it.

Oh, I like C2C a lot, but the LOOOONG PAUSES ALL THE TIME hurt it a lot, IMO. There were plenty of good eps, though. It's been while since I've seen SGC2C, which they actually plug in Adult Swim ads but never actually show anymore.

(and the DVDs are still priced a bit high for my cheap ass)

ATHF usually has very strong eps, and I've liked most of the newer eps ("Gee Whiz" is my favorite new one, though), yet I've not seen them enough to see if they stand up.

Biggest problem with Brak Show at this point--as menitioned--too little Brak, hardly any Zorak, not enough Thundercles. Dad's left to pick up the slack (which he does well--such as his whoring of the Japanese company's crap), but is hurt by Brak, who was only tolerable as "that dumbass who would occasionally be on C2C."

Three eps of Harvey Birdman stick out for me: the first ep, the Droopy one, and the one where they're trying to make everyone more efficient. Okay, honorable mention to the one with hidden cameras everywhere. My favorite one probably is the Droopy one, though. Wait--that's half of all the episodes they ever made right there, isn't it? :P X the Eliminator is the highlight of it for me, though.

Sea Lab has a handfull of episodes I really like--Waking Quinn, Radio Free Sealab, and Hail, Squishface. For the most part, I absolutely hate it. I actually enjoyed the episode where they just re-dubbed an episode of Sea Lab 2020 with the current voice actors more than most of the 2021 eps.

I always wondered why they did that with the one Sealab ep. My favorite is probably "Bizarro".

I've found that regardless of how bad or good an episode of Birdman is, Stephen Colbert almost always steals the show.

I personally loved the Japanese symbiote ep of ATHF. My other favorites are "Total Re-Carl", "Cybernetic Ghost", "Jiggle Billy", "Balloonenstein", and the Mooninites eps. I also love the recent "Spacecataz" intros. I even heard a rumor that it'll become its own series.

The guy who was on The Daily Show?

I thought I saw his name on the credits as a writer, but didn't know he voiced a character. He's the dude with the eyepatch, correct?

Own series? Eh, they're good, but I don't know. Plus, I liked the Dr. Weird ones a lot more on the whole.

Colbert indeed plays Phil. He's been great on everything I've ever seen him in. That includes an ep of Law and Order as well.

Yeah, they really need to tone down the one Plutonian's accent so he's easier to understand. He's hell on my ears at times.

I also found the show that came on after PHF to be very funny. I'd like to see them do that again for each premiere. Just make sure Meatwad is on each panel.

For me it began and ended with the Flinstones/Sopranos parody... the only one I've ever seen that I liked

I think Colbert also does the voice of Reducto, in addition to Phil.

Personally, my favorite show on the comedy side of Adult Swim is The Venture Brothers. It's an awesome parody of Jonny Quest and it gets better every time I see it.

So who caught Tom Goes To the Mayor this past Sunday? I thought it was pretty good, and it showed alot of potential.

Also, I watched the second Super Milk Chan episode and the show has grown on me. I'm not sure if it was a better episode or if I adjusted my mind to it, but I liked it alot more this episode.

Tom Goes to the Mayor was indeed good. The humor there, the goofy, blatant and absurd mixed with the dry and subtle touches, worked together well. It's the new Mr. Show I and others have been wanting, to no surprise since Bob Odenkirk is one of those behind it.

As simplified as the animation is, it stands out from the rest of the line-up and only helps out the comedy more, especially when it comes to Tom's expressions and reactions as the straight man on the show.

Coincidentally, a good 65-75% of those commenting on the show at the Adult Swim boards absolutely hated it.
