I think that the main reason for this is he needs R&R on top of the fact that he, Rumsfeld, and Cheney hold each other in "Minimum High Regard." Good luck to him.

 

I'm not sure who will replace him, but I don't think it will be someone who is "Powell-like."

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he is resigning, his department has confirmed.

He will step down from his post once President Bush has chosen a successor, officials were quoted as saying.

 

The 67-year-old, long rumoured to have planned to serve only one term, was said to have submitted his resignation to President George W Bush last Friday.

 

A White House spokesman said three other cabinet level resignations would be announced on Monday.

 

One of those is Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.

 

"The Secretary announced to his staff this morning that he had submitted his resignation on Friday," Reuters quoted a state department official as saying.

 

"He said he was staying on until a successor is confirmed and on board."

 

Mr Powell was seen as a moderate voice within the Bush administration.

Not really. The way the Afghanistan war was handled ignored the whole "Powell Doctrine" that came out with Gulf War I. That was the biggest bone of contention during Afghanistan and it was also the reason taht Powell wasn't too happy with Iraq since it was performed in a similar way to the war in Afghanistan. Yes it seems that the way the Afghanistan & Iraq war was handled was not the way he would have liked but I certainly wouldn't call him a "dove" unless you consider anyone who thinks the way the Iraq War was handled was done poorly is a dove. In that case, call me Mr. Dove...or better yet SENOR Dove.

Also, Cerebus, from watching the Frontline documentary on Rumsfeld I got the sense that Powell not only disliked the way the war was conducted, but the entire idea of the war.

I saw that documentary (my mother in law couldn't stop talking about it so I retroactively checked it out on Tivo) and it had some good spots and bad spots. It's main bad spot was its reliance on notoriously anti-Bush WaPo (and Gen. Hoar lackey) author Tom Ricks. I thought the conflict between the Army and the DoD was very accurate, but one thing they DIDN'T really touch on was the Army also wanted a full scale AirLand Battle (ALB) invasion in Afghanistan. That's one of the reasons why the DoD & Bush decided to take the advice of those senior generals when it came to Iraq with a big grain of salt.

 

Like I said, if you base everything you know on this documentary you're doing yourself a disfavor. Sure Powell is a military man that follows orders, and that mentality can be hard to break when one was in the military as long as Powell was, but look at how Clark and Hoar have gone on to publicly disagree and fight with Bush. I never bought the fact that Powell was ardently against the Iraq war as a whole, but I would say that he wasn't as enthusiastic about it as, say, Rumsfeld.

Agreed. He was much more skeptical and didn't seem to buy into the whole neo-con "mideast sandbox" ideology. I guess he eventually came on board, though. His ill-fated UN speech would seem to indicate this, anyway.
