The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 It'll be interesting to see ESPN do a movie that isn't just a smear piece. No, wait, no it isn't! It's just gonna suck in a different way.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Jeremy Roenick had this to say about the state of the NHL. But here's what Stephen A. Smith has to say about the ESPN movie, "3"!
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Hey, TSM gets to bitch about ESPN and NASCAR in the same thread! Hurrah! That's not fair. Hell, I even almost visited Dale Earnhardt's house over the summer.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Too bad you did that this summer, Anglesault, because we're about to go to Jeremy Schaap at Dale Earnhardt's house, here to talk about the inspiration for the ESPN movie "3"!

Damn you timing. DAMN YOU! Hell, if they would have been filming in August, my polite "Oh, well, we'll try to make it there" to the NC info lady might have been sincere. Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Will this be worse than that abortion of a movie (obviously Hustle) about Pete Rose? Considering it's about a RACECAR DRIVER (a sport only rednecks and fans of car crashes like) I don't see it getting too great of ratings, especially when it's not even a fake event. We know D.E. dies, we know his son ends up being the next him, and probably in 7 years, D.E. Jr. will die.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 That must be some brilliant strategy from Nextel, FOX and NBC to sink hundreds of millions of dollars into something that only "rednecks and fans of car crashes like".

We know D.E. dies, we know his son ends up being the next him, and probably in 7 years, D.E. Jr. will die. Like wrestling fans can talk. That's one of the reasons I can't get into it. One stereotypical redneck pastime is enough for a lifetime. That and it tries to pass itself off as a legitimate sport.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Yeah, at least wrestling knows where it is and doesn't try to pass itself off as legitimate like NASCAR does. Let's make the rule "If it's on NBC, it's not a real sport." Figure skating, NASCAR...Notre Dame football?
Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I hope this isn't some Bio-Pic because everyone pretty much knows his story, Son of Racing legend who couldn't get a full ride and then broke onto the top stage by FORCING his way into it. Revolutionized the Marketing aspects of Nascar and drove it out of the south and made it the National and mainstream success it is now. He was a great driver who couldn't win the big one (kinda like Benoit, for you 'rasslin fans) and then he did it when everyone doubted he had anything left in him. He then created his own Corporation and that has been a huge success. He gave his son a ride, a big one. Something his daddy never did for him. Just as Dale Jr. career got off and running, He'd died at final turn of the final lap behind His son and fellow friend seeing them pass the checkered flag. Alot of people like to wax poetic about how for the first time and obviously LAST time, Dale wasn't selfish. Instead of fighting for himself, he was fighting for Junior and Mikey. I don't want that. We know that stuff. Even AS who doesn't follow this stuff, knows this story. What I wanted to see was a deeper story about his flaws as a husband(he didn't cheat but he never was a husband), his business tactics (for "dumb redneck", he managed to make some major corporate moves with major companies), a investigation on he revolutionized the marketing of NASCAR. go in depth how the other drivers wanted him OUT of nascar. Show how he went from the most hated in all of Nascar to the most beloved. Show us the psychological breakdowns from coming so close to winning Daytona 500 and falling short. How he changed as a man when he met his 3rd wife, Theresa and how he wanted to become a father for the first time in his life, well after His three other kids (Kelly, Kerry and Dale Jr) were already grown up. We all know his public life and his success on the track. Focus on the other stuff. You can't attack Dale Earnhardt like you could Bobby Knight, Bear Bryant and Pete Rose. Earnhardt; even his biggest enemies respected and loved him. He never commited a crime (that we know of) and never caused constroversy outside of the track environment. Dale Earnhardt wasn't a dumb redneck but was a fantastic manipulative mastermind who controled mutliple industries. That side HAS to be explored here, if not. It's no different then the Sportscentury fluff pieces they run on him.

Oh you know the story. Clip? Thats not a racing term. Bump? Nudge? Rub? sure. Clip? that doesn't exist in racing. And I touched on that when i said "the drivers wanted him OUT of nascar". He's the last remanent of the old school style of driving and that's important to focus on when you talk about he still managed to revolutionize the industry. and when it "backfired". He wasn't doing that, he was blocking. He was "clipped" by Sterling Marlin.

Went out with a NASCAR freak for a while. I had my wrestling, she had her racecar driving, and it all worked out well enough. Still good friends with her.
