The Czech Republic Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Health reasons, I suppose. He did a lot to resuscitate the hopeless Grizzlies franchise, but he is 71 years old now, and he said that he's not as astute, observant, or energetic enough to coach as well as he feels he ought to. Mike Fratello is the frontrunner for the coaching job in Memphis, but he's got the color spot on TNT coverage with Marv Albert. Where would Marv be without "The Czar"?

Mike Fratello is the frontrunner for the coaching job in Memphis, but he's got the color spot on TNT coverage with Marv Albert. Where would Marv be without "The Czar"? That, and I think his stint with the Cavs --- where he perfected the art of BORING basketball --- is unlikely to give him too many other chances. -=Mike ...Hell, sign Eddie Fogler as coach. He isn't doing much...
The Czech Republic Posted November 27, 2004 Author Report Posted November 27, 2004 The Czar is a pretty weird-lookin' dude. On the halftime show they were apologizing for the boring Cavs.
iggymcfly Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 That, and I think his stint with the Cavs --- where he perfected the art of BORING basketball --- is unlikely to give him too many other chances. -=Mike Oh, when it comes to boring basketball, Mike Fratello has absolutely nothing on Dick Bennett. Yeah, he took Wisconsin to the Final Four, and he's resuscitating the program at WSU, but sometimes I think is whole strategy is just to be slow and boring to piss the other team off. It seems like any player that shoots the ball before the shot clock is down to 15 is subject to an automatic three-game suspension. I really doubt anyone here follows Coug hoops well enough to know what I'm talking about, but we have this PG named Randy Green who's one of the most talented players on the team, but he's a little creative, and gets to the basket, and takes an open shot when he has it, so naturally, Dick Bennett hates him, and he only played a few minutes in the opener. Mike Fratello may have been good at boring basketball, but Dick Bennett treats it like the Word of God.
Vern Gagne Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Why not give someone like Lionel Hollins the head coaching gig?
kkktookmybabyaway Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 I always liked Hubie -- here's hoping he can go back to announcing. And Mike's right -- after what he did with the Cavs, I don't want the Czar anywhere NEAR a team's bench...
The Czech Republic Posted November 27, 2004 Author Report Posted November 27, 2004 Marv Albert is gonna be sad. He never even got to say good-bye.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Don't worry -- when Mike gets fired again, he'll join Marv at the broadcast table...
The Czech Republic Posted November 27, 2004 Author Report Posted November 27, 2004 How did a scrawny Italian guy get the name "The Czar," anyway?
Steviekick Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Jeff Hornacek was looking to get into coaching...he was interviewed for the opening the Celtics had this summer.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I don't understand how they call Hubie Brown one of the greatest when he lost more games than he won. That's like my gripe with them calling Lenny Wilkens the winningest coach in basketball history. Winningest? What the fuck does that mean and how relevant is it supposed to be? He has about a .500 record so he's lost as many games as he has won.
The Czech Republic Posted November 28, 2004 Author Report Posted November 28, 2004 Is "winningest" even a word?!? ESPN seems to think so.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I don't understand how they call Hubie Brown one of the greatest when he lost more games than he won. That's like my gripe with them calling Lenny Wilkens the winningest coach in basketball history. Winningest? What the fuck does that mean and how relevant is it supposed to be? He has about a .500 record so he's lost as many games as he has won. Hubie Brown took over 3 franchises that were either really bad or on a downward spiral towards being really bad. But he somehow got them to win again and become strong playoff level teams. In the process, he just had to take some losses too is all. Brown's a very good coach who somehow got NBA players to not mind playing less than 30 minutes a game a piece and in the process got the Grizzlies to win 50 games, that's pretty impressive by itself. And as far as the Czar's job in Cleveland, those teams were awful and he still had a respectable record. This is the same guy who coached Dominique Wilkins, he knows how to let his teams go. It just depends on what level of talent he has to work with is all.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I can see your point about Hubie Brown.
