Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Is anyone else watching this? I stopped because it was so ridiculously biased. The amount of bad reporting and blatantly biased material they're pushing made me turn it off. I think you'd be wrong to assume that they didn't kill because he was gay, but whatever, that's not the point. They're getting close people to the killers to say that they were lying about past testimony, and worst of all, they showing SYMPATHY for these two bastards. "Hey, you guys killed him, but it was just a mugging gone wrong. THEY ARE NOT HOMOPHOBIC!" Stop trying to take attention away from the fact that they are pieces of shit, seriously. Sexual orientation being the motivation or not, you shouldn't reflect on them being nice people since you know, they didn't care that he was gay. They brutally beat him for thirty dollars, not to mention tied him up to a fence and beat him with a magnum. If you want to come off as obviously biased, fine, I guess that's your job as a "Newsmagazine" show. But don't try to garner sympathy for these people. I watched because I was hoping to see an unbiased (HA!) look at what REALLY happened, and what caused these people to do it. What I found was shoddy journalism. I guess I shouldn't really be surprised though, EH? Odds are someone else here watched it, or has feelings on it. I guess one good point is that it made re-think about hate crime. I thought if Hate Crime laws would discourage acts like this, then go for it. On the other hand, if they're trying to downplay acts like this if they aren't "hate crimes", as if this horrible murder is not as bad since it was not motivated by a hate for gays, then fuck it. I know they both still got life in prison, but in terms of the way 20/20 is handling this, it's almost like they feel it's not as bad since they didn't, errm, since they SAY that they didn't kill him because he was gay. Just had to vent about the piece of shit that this show turned out to be.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Bout what I expected it to be. Sorry, but I had no hope for this special when the lady running it was like, "oh they were falsely convicted of a hate crime" and "oh, it was just a mugging and people lied". Sorry, but come on. Even if it's not a hate crime, it's a very brutal and sadistic killing. Leaving someone tied to a fence after beating them is just sick, I don't care if the victim was gay or straight. If it took a hate crime to give them the time they deserved then I'm fine with it.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I didn't watch it ( I don't really watch 20/20) But personally, I couldn't give a shit why they brutally murdered a man. Hate crime (stupid name, by the way), mugging, whatever, the end result was still the same, and declaring that that they're not homophobes doesn't make it all better. That being said, I do understand that there are people who want to know exactly what happened, so I'm not offended by the idea of running this story like some people are. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I went to a play at OU recently called "The Laramie Project" anyone seen it? It was a very good play and shed some light on it b/c it's basically a retelling of interviews conducted after the murder.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I caught some of it and it wasn't too believeable.. I don't know if I buy that- I'm completely against hate crime law but I don't see the point in doing the story. Who cares why they killed him- if it raised awareness about gay rights and gay violence then that's good. If you guys watched 20/20 instead of the Brokaw special- I feel for you guys

Guest BDC Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Hell, I quit 20/20 after the whole Foley thing went down. A show that finds that an acceptable practice is dead to me.

Guest BDC Report post Posted November 28, 2004 Hell, I quit 20/20 after the whole Foley thing went down. A show that finds that an acceptable practice is dead to me. What was the Foley thing? Well, we're dealing with a segment about backyard wrestlers. Clip 1: just some kids doing some holds and stuff. Foley comments it looks like just clean fun. Clip 2: Kids bashing each other with lightbulbs, cheese graters and so on. They put reaction to clip 1 FOLLOWING clip 2 on TV as if that was what the reaction was to. I can't tolerate a program that willfully does horseshit like that.
