The Killers- I heard "Somebody Told Me" on a DirecTV digital music channel and bought the album for $6.99. I never liked those newer "The" bands, but The Killers turned out to be pretty good. I'm glad they chose "Mr. Brightside" as a single, because that was always my favorite track on the album.

Radiohead- I've liked a couple songs by them, but by and large, I believe they are the most overrated band in history. They're so drab, boring, and just... not good. That may be an unfair assessment, seeing as how I have not heard much other than their singles, but what I have heard leaves me with no desire to seek out more material. They do make good vidoes, at least.

I enjoy Radiohead and am largely indifferent to Outkast, but Neurosis was better than both in the 90s.

Radiohead are good. Always were. I'm not a massive listener, but they did produce some great music and continued to once they'd conquered the world. Not the best band ever, but their detractors seldom provide good argument.

Tindersticks were consistently quite good to brilliant throughout the 90s.

I've done a total 180 on Radiohead, going from your assessment of "drab boring annoying" to "Thom Yorke hurts my ears but other than that they're the best!!" (okay maybe a 177), so whereas I may have agreed before, I've seen the light, insofar as anything light can be associated with Radiohead, and have to say they deserve the acclaim they get. Jonny Greenwood is a great multi-instrumentalist and composer (he's usually the second stage of development for songs after Yorke lays out the first ideas) and even though Thom Yorke can have one of the most grinding voices ever at time ("Knives Out," "Sit down. Stand up." to name two off the top of my head) he writes some great stuff. If you can't get into Kid A and Amnesiac, I can't really say I blame you; those take a while.

I don't know. There's just a cool sound to what they do, ranging from the triple-guitar songs like "Knives Out" all the way to the heavily electronic stuff like "Idioteque." (Though with those, you've gotta imagine Colin and Ed get bored.)

Anyway yeah. Radiohead, better than I imagined.

I'll look up some Radiohead songs on Soulseek and listen to them while I get high and talk to Kotzenjunge. If I'm not entertained under those circumstances, I probably never will be.

Thanks for the recommendations, but I didn't download any Radiohead. For some reason, Soulseek wants to take 30-60 minutes for one song despite the fact that I have a DSL connection. Any reason for this?

In other news, in contrast to what I posted earlier in this thread, I think I might actually like the Decemberists' Picaresque now. I'd say it still has a couple of duds on it, but my overall opinion of the album has improved since the initial listens.

It's okay not to like Radiohead. Given Matt Young's tastes, he likely never will, anyway.

Don't judge me based on Ashlee Simpson alone. I'm not some musical elitist like certain people here, but who knows, I may end up liking some of the same stuff you do. I simply haven't heard most of your type of music.

As a musician and songwriter, I have respect for technical proficiency and musical ability, but I can't like a song or performer based on artistic merits alone if I'm not feeling the music.

I'm making an effort to see what all the fuss is about with these bands that people here listen to, you especially, Matt, since I will admit that you know your shit. If only I could get fucking Soulseek to work properly.

I wasn't judging you based on Ashlee Simpson alone, but whatever. It's still okay to not like Radiohead; I simply don't enjoy the train of thought employed by some people that you (the general "you," not you specifically) must like certain bands. Fans of Pink Floyd often are often just as guilty of this. I'm not saying anyone here is guilty of that, by the way, but still, it happens.

As for the recent posts involving what band or bands were the best of the 90s, I'd say it would be Outkast...had Stankonia been released in '99 rather than 2000. As it stands, they released one arguably great record (Aquemini), one very good one (ATLiens) and one so-so one (Southernplaya...). As for my pick, I'd lean towards Tindersticks, but that's more for personal reasons, rather than an objective stance at what makes "great" art. However, since I've little concern with looking at this objectively, I'll just say Tindersticks and leave it at that.

I didn't realize you were aware of much of anything else I listened to except Ashlee. The exception would be the KROQ thread I posted today, but although I enjoy those bands, they're not my favorites or anything.

As for my musical elitist reference, I wasn't referring to you specifically, although you could possibly be included in that group.

I didn't mean for my post to be a flame or attack, but merely a response with no negative connotations attached.

With that said, if you have any links to archived radio shows of yours, I think that would be a good place for me to start as far as listening to the stuff you like.

I didn't really listen to much Alkaline Trio in the past in regards to full albums... I liked a lot of their songs, but generally found their albums to be hard on the ears due to crappy quality. The production has taken a huge leap forward on their latest outing, Crimson, and I find it to be their best album to date due in large part to this.

It's enough of a change that a musician friend of mine has taken a liking to them, and remarked that they "actually sound like a band now."

Recommended. Songs to check out are Time To Waste, Mercy Me, and Stained In Satin.

"With Teeth" by Nine Inch Nails was very underwhelming on it's first listen. It just seems too "pop" for me. I want dark sounding stuff from Nine Inch Nails.

However, like the first single from it, it has grown on me the more I listen to it. It's still not as great as "Pretty Hate Machine" though.

"Silent Alarm" by Bloc Party was awesome on it's first listen.

is it just me or is it impossible to get any worse than Papa Roach?

I'd say Limp Bizkit are worse than Papa Roach.

Papa Roach went from playing big venues...to recently playing a small club in Lincoln, Ne. They've fallen off harder than snoop dogg.

I liked Papa Roach's first album, but their second wasn't too great, There were a couple good songs, but nothing spectacular, and the rap-rock thing was getting old.

On Getting Away With Murder, Jacoby Shaddix chooses to sing rather than rap, and the results are great. I loved the album, and judging by reviews, many others did as well. It's one of those rare albums that can be listened to all the way through without skipping a song. I'd put it in my top... 7 or 8 albums of 2004, and I'm not even a big Papa Roach fan overall.

Perhaps it has something to do with every song's theme reminding me of something I've gone through in the last year or two.
