I loved In Utero the first time I heard it. Some kid on my hockey team lent the tape to me as soon as he got it. Songs 10 and 11 just jarred my system, and I didn't hate them. They were just my first exposure to music like that. My parents probably started worrying abotu me. Going from Bon Jovi to that.

 

I later borrowed Bleach (which is garbage) from another kid on my hockey team who was the biggest Nirvana fan, about 5 years later I got news that he hung himself at a truck stop in Winnipeg.

I can't help but wonder what they were really like in concert. It bothers me that I never got to see them. I suppose that holds true for a number of bands as well.

Yeah, not a lot of people are huge Bleach fans. I'm curious to know why in particular you thought it was garbage, though? It's a fun album.

A friend of mine saw them live at the Big Day Out in 1992. I've asked her a few times to explain what the experience it was like, but she still can't, and the fact that she can't makes me wish I'd seen them play even more.

I don't mind Bleach all that much. "About a Girl", "Love Buz", and "Floyd the Barber" are great songs.

Nirvana never really blew my mind. I thought they were pretty cool, but I was really caught up in my hatred of Achy Breaky Heart which topped The Killer Bee B106.3's top ten countdown thing they did for a few weeks. Nirvana was played on the same station. A curious animal, it was.

 

I thought In Utero sucked back then, and I still don't think it's as special as some of you make it out to be, but I never had an attachment to it. I didn't hear Bleach for quite some time after those two, and it went in the "ok" file. I thought the Unplugged cd was awesome, however, I don't like it that much anymore. Five songs I like a lot on the disc, really. My popularity-shunning phase came a lot earlier than Incandenza's. I try not to think about the pupae years either.

 

I like Nirvana exactly as much as I like The Rolling Stones.

Yeah, not a lot of people are huge Bleach fans. I'm curious to know why in particular you thought it was garbage, though? It's a fun album.

Production, it didn't have the melodies that I liked. They hadn't fine tuned their craft yet.

Count me in among the camp who cite "Bleach" as their best piece of work. " Blew", "Floyd the Barber", "School" "Swap Meet", "Big Cheese", and "Paper Cuts" are superb. I give a slight nod to "nevermind" over "in utero" just because I feel that the former has less filler than the latter, could have done without "tourettes".

 

As for the Meat Puppets, it has pained me dearly throughout my life to hear most people mock their original versions of those songs just because they are completely different than what one would expect. The Puppets were an amazing band and have put out some great albums, none of which really sounded the same. Get their "No Strings Attached" album to get a good dose of what I am talking about.

I like Bleach. I can't explain it. I find the simplicity in About a Girl, School, Negative Creep, etc. to be admirable. It seems as though they made use of very little (from the cost to record the album to the repetitive lyrics) and created something quite unique.

In Utero wasn't that good. It was top heavy and lacked structure and pace. Sure, some have said it was Kurt suicidily alienating his audience... but then, why does everybody apparently love it?

It was good, but Nevermind was better.

It had the structure of an inverted penis. It had a bunch of good (relatively) poppy songs up front, followed by a bunch of noise, and one more "real" song at the end. It is what I would expect if a fairly talented musician said "I hate myself and don't care about making a good album."

In Utero was the album that changed the way I look at music. It's just an overwhelming, emotionally shattering experience for someone that is a freshman in HS. I've still never heard something like it.

 

I got into Nirvana more around that time than Nevermind. I got it a few weeks later and I love the album (in fact listened to it in the car today), but it seems more like a great collection of songs than anything. But my god just LOOK at that album: Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Come As You Are, Breed, Lithium, Polly, etc. I'd put that first 6 up against anything.

 

In Utero is a unified album. Imagine how much greater it'd be had I Hate Myself and Want to Die and Verse Chorus Verse had been included.

 

I also picked up Incesticide and that's a very solid album as well. It isn't really a coherent whole (just a collection of outtakes) but I'd say about 11 of the 15 songs are good.

 

Bleach is an acquired taste to be sure. I don't think the album has ever been released in a truly remastered form. The version on the CD of About a Girl sounds much worse than the version on the NIRVANA compilation from 2002. I'm a big Nirvana fan, but anyone who thinks Bleach is their BEST album is loony.

 

Someone should start a thread on the new box set. I'll probably get it for Christmas.

i don't think "i hate myself..." would've fit in well on 'in utero'. "verse chorus verse" would've been nice, simply cause it's so god damn good, but it also would've stuck out like a sore thumb without a more albini-like treatment.

I don't know how you can call someone "loony" for enjoying an album that sold like hotcakes on the underground at the time of its release and basically set the stage for the breakthrough in '91. Are the songs catchier on Bleach, and better written, no? But something about the sheer hunger and rawness of the band at that time draws me into the album. If you have read any Cobain biography you know that this was when he truly put his heart into both the band and the songwriting and I think it shows.

Nevermind is an album they wanted to make. It blew up on the underground AND the mainstream. There's no way anything on Bleach is catchier than Drain You. No Way.

One can make an argument for "About A Girl"...but why?

 

Bleach lies in the same area as Nevermind for me - I like the songs, albeit a less percentage of them, but I really don't like the album versions. Give me the "About A Girl" from Unplugged in New York and "School" & "Negative Creep" from Wishkah and I'm good.

 

...now that I think about it, that's how I feel about all of their studio albums, except for In Utero. "Aneurysm" is the only track I like off of Incesticide and I can't really even stand the album version.
