Tekken 5

Recommended Posts

God, playing as Kuma is so frustrating. His ff2 demon uppercut will just randomly pass through the opponent even when you CLEARLY should hit them. It's not just me either, as other Kuma fans are complaining about it at Zaibatsu. I had it happen to me like 3 times just last night. What is Namco's deal with screwing Kuma?

Playing as Kuma is frustrating period. Haven't had the ff2 problem yet, but I haven't played Kuma enough. On a side note, making Kuma look like it's doing the Worm (1+2 repeatedly from the slide position) puts a smile on my face.

Heh, there are some T5 vids up at IGN made by the IGN staff. They are awful. It saddens me that the game will be reviewed almost entirely by people that play like that. :(

They had an office T4 tournament when it came out for PS2 and posted the footage. Awful stuff. I remember a Jin vs. Panda match that consisted of almost nothing but regular throws, Jin's new string and Panda's 111.

Do you remember when some guys at TZ actually went to the IGN offices to challenge one of the staff? People had pointed out a bunch of errors in his T4 review and he started talking a lot of trash, claiming he was a Tekken expert and that even though he mashes he was still really good. A couple people actually took him up on the offer and he ended up having to log onto TZ and admit he got owned.

I heard about that, but I wasn't really following TZ back then. Sounds fun.

Apparently he didn't learn much, if it's the same guy making the vids. You'd think he'd at least come away with some idea of how to play Tekken.

Does anybody else play or see somebody else play Tekken 5 using the PS2 controller for the directional pad and the arcade buttons? I started using it a few days ago and I love it.

The PS2 d-pad feels alot more responsive and accurate than the joystick, especially on diagonals, and the arcade buttons make it alot easier for combos, especially 1+4 and 2+3 compared to a PS2 controller. I think it's a real nice combination.

I've never seen that. Sounds like it'd be really hard to manage.

Did everyone hear about the $100 special edition T5 for PS2? I'm gonna get it, even though I won't use the stick.

Yup, cuz I suck (even more) at the game using the arcade sticks.

I use an Hori for SC2 and a pad for T5, so I may get the combo, since my Hori now is getting kind of beat up and unresponsive.

Ced, I've never seen that, but it's a pretty cool idea. I had to switch over to a pad for T5 since the motions actually have some complexity (unlike SC2), and I was constantly messing them up on a stick, but I really miss the big arcade buttons. Maybe I'll try it next time I play. Everyone will think I'm weird, hehe.

Apparently Heihachi is not one to rebel from his family's ability to NEVER DIE, as he has been found in arcades around the world. It's all over Tekken Zaibatsu. However, I'm not game to wade through the crap (and there is an awful lot of it) to obtain photographs or anything.

Regardless, the old bastard lives.

So the Mishima family looks pretty much like this:

Heihachi - Thrown off a cliff by Kazuya, literally blown up by an army of Jacks

Kazuya - Thrown off a cliff as a child, thrown into a volcano

Jin - Shot, point blank, in the face

Jinpachi - Beaten to a pulp by his son, imprisoned for years

Tough lot.

I love how TZ's Heihachi thread just devolves into an off-topic flame on the first page, then becomes a battle between the "It's a hoax/The pics are fake" people versus the "It's legit/STFU the pics are real" people.

Personally, I was holding a little hope that a normal Jinpachi would be unlocked.

Here is Namco's explanation for Heihachi surviving the explosion:

The CEO of the Mishima Zaibatsu and the sponsor of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 was Heihachi Mishima.

Soon after suffering a defeat at the hands of Jin Kazama at Hon-Maru, Jack soldiers belonging to an unknown faction attacked without warning. Kazuya and Heihachi both teamed up and engaged the Jack soldiers, but because of Kazuya’s betrayal, Heihachi was caught in the Jacks’ suicide attack.

A normal man would have perished in the heart of an explosion as great as the one that erupted, but Heihachi was no normal man, his body was superior to that of a normal man’s.

One month later, Heihachi got wind of someone else running the Mishima Zaibatsu and news of the upcoming The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5. Although his body was badly broken, Heihachi healed at a rate much faster than any normal man. By the time of the tournaments opening he was completely healed.

“Who the hell thinks he/she can run the Mishima Zaibatsu as well as I have! I haven’t handed it over to anyone!”

So he moonlights as Superman now?

Two days! Omg I can't wait!

Heh and the stupid reviews have begun. Apparently 1up's version of T5 has no backdash. Interesting... Heh fighting game reviews are just horrible.

No online play?

It'll be lucky to get an 8 in Game Informer, probably.

Got it yesterday. I'm pretty impressed overall. Just getting a 99% perfect port is pretty impressive. It looks better than I thought it would. The music is really good, too. I thought it sounded good in the arcade but could never really hear it. I'm a little disappointed in the way they did the profiles, though. Not being able to name the individual characters, having to use a different memory card for second player and not having it record your win/loss ratio are all annoying. It's still fun to dress up your characters though. Better than nothing, but not as good as it should be and not as good as the arcade.

Heh it's surprisingly hard to beat the game with all the characters and get all the endings. Jinpachi's not that bad when you're using someone you know, but trying to beat it with someone you don't know very well is a pain.

Is Devil Within even worth playing? It sounds pretty tedius, and we've already unlocked DJ from versus. Is there anything else that it unlocks that you can't get another way?

No, nothing. You get Devil Jin and the boss stages the first time through but you can get those just by playing 200 games in the normal modes.

The second time through you can pick up these red Devil icons that give you a free custom item, but they're nothing you can't normally buy in the store.

Is Devil Within basically Tekken Force, BTW? Is it fun to play just to play?

I hear Tekken 1-3 (the arcade versions) were included as a bonus. Namco includes some awesome bonuses, I must say (even though those Tekkens wouldn't include the home features, obviously).

Well, it's a Tekken beat em up, but it's not really like Tekken Force. TF just put the regular Tekken gameplay into a beat em up setting. DW is a completely seperate game. The controls are nothing like regular Tekken. They're simplified, with a punch, kick and block button, and you can lock onto baddies and jump, double jump and climb onto ledges. There's some adventure elements. You have to find some items and there's even some puzzles. Oh, and it sucks.

The arcade games are really cool. I sort of wish I hadn't bought the real things now.

Finally picked up my copy of T5. Devil Within is absolute balls, but the inclusion of the first three arcade titles makes up for that. It's nice to bust out the original Tekken and remind myself how far 3D fighting has come along.

I'm also a bit annoyed in the omission of custom naming each character, but I'm mostly annoyed that I can't use my half-and-half style that I've grown accustomed to. But the fact that I can hone my skills without burning tokens makes up for that.

...and Kuma has the greatest ending to make up for his bottom-tier-ness *thumbs up*

Well after countless hours of practice I can now do ewgfx3 a little over half the time, something I've been trying to do since TTT. This is awesome. I'm so hyped right now!

Jer, I got some questions about Raven.

How do you get 3 knees in a juggle? 2 is hard enough. Is it just something that takes skill or is there some trick?

I'm using knee, 1, knee, d/f+44. Do you know any better juggles?

How do you do the CD version of the WS+1 uppercut? And after it is there anything better than 1,1,2,2,b+3?

I can't do three knees in a juggle. I don't think there's a particular trick to it; I think you just have to get the knees to come out at the first possible moment. It seems ridiculously hard, though. Even the Koreans often use easier juggles instead.

I like knee, 1, knee, 2, 4. One more damage than yours, and I like the wake a little bit better, since you're in a good position to go into crouch dash mixups. Knee, 1, knee, 1, f+4 is good for sending them further across the screen. And then obviously if they can be jabbed to a wall, doing that and then ending with f3+4,4,2 is best. Crazy damage.

After ws1, you can still do normal two knee juggles, they're just harder. ws1, knee, 1, knee, 2, 4 works and does solid damage. I only get it like a quarter of the time though, so I usually use ws1, knee, 1, (4~3,3)_(4~3,1) depending on if I want damage or oki.

I can't figure out how to do CD ws1 either. Let me know if you find out...
