So I wanna buy a new FPS

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty much going to be getting a game for free for the holidy season, and since I enjoy a good FPS, I thought I'd post a thread to get some suggestions from you fellows as to which newly released FPS I should obtain for the PS2.

I'm looking to get one of these three new games:

1. Call of Duty: Finest Hour

2. Killzone

3. GoldenEye: Rogue Agent

Also, a few things you should consider:

a. Don't bother telling me to base my selection on multiplay - most of my friends don't bother with FPS, and I haven't wasted my money on making my PS2 online. Base your comments, therefore, on what these games offer as far as single-player campaigns.

b. As you may or may not have read in the recent GoldenEye thread, I pretty much don't have a problem with the Electronic Arts Bond games (and in fact, I enjoyed both Agent Under Fire and Nightfire).

So, of these three games, which one of these three should I pick up? I don't have much of a preference, so I'm open to your feedback.

All I can say is GE sucks and I liked EA's previous Bond FPS too. It's NOTHING like them though.

CronoT: Because Amazon reviews are so trustworthy...

("A gamer," you're an idiot.)

(Revised: "A gamer," you're a fucking mouth-breathing crack-baby idiot.)

The B&R review I knew about in advance, but the rest I just did random searches on, and voila.

Ok, if you're going by IGN, "Goldeneye" is definitely out becuase it's supposed to be terrible in every single way (except online multiplayer but you don't care about that).

That leaves you with the other two: "Call of Duty" (which I am asking for because I do care about online) which is supposed to be ok but paled in comparison to the PC original, and "Killzone", supposedly a decent FPS that unfortunately doesn't live up to the massive hype.

Just research and choose between those two, I guess.

Don't get GE, it's awful.

And now for some actually helpful links:

Call of Duty at GameRankings

Killzone at GameRankings

Personally I have only played the Demo Disc of Killzone, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you like dark future type scenarios or, even better, like animes such as Akira or Jin-Roh you'll probably love the visual design of the game and can overlook some of its flaws.

PS: If you don't own it yet you should also consider Timesplitters 2. It's in my (and the media's) opinion the best FPS for the PS2 by a wide margin.

I can't wait for Timesplitters 3, reported to be in development. Unfortunately, I heard EA is publishing it. Hopefully, the game won't reek of their meddling, but I bet it will.

I'm hoping for an upgraded mapmaker with, possibly, outdoors locations and tiles that would actually look like someone's walls.

That shouldn't be a problem. The last great series they took over was Burnout, and Burnout 3 is fucking awesome and still developed by the same people. And if you look at screens and movies of Timesplitters 3 you'll see that there's nothing to worry about at this point.

Now, if they'd only let Free Radical take over the Bond series....
