Its time for a VELOCITY (12-04-04) THREAD

Recommended Posts

Well, we go from Paul "The Dragon" London to "Ravishing" Billy Kidman.

Rude was more consistent in the ring and could actually cut promos.

Kidman almost falls on his face!

Maybe, but I'm just remembering that.

Interesting note...I'm remembering that right now about the 1988 Royal Rumble which actually had a match between Steamboat and Rude.

Kidman really hasn't done much to improve since... 1998, has he? I think he's been coaching John Cena in the art of "How to dog your matches without losing your push", except Kidman is suddenly on Velocity again.

NWA style wrestling!

...and I mean OLD NWA.  :P

Kidman = HHH's favorite cruiserweight...you know, aside from X-Pac?

I thought Tajiri was...since he can actually BEAT UP ON Tajiri.

L-A-M-E finish to a pretty boring match. Akio vs. London gets Match of the Night easily, and possible Match of the Week on the SD! side.

The ddt spot, Akio didn't even land on his head, it was some sort of strange twisting neckwrench.  I can only presume that London was either out of it, or forgot to use right(?) arm for the ddt.

You're suppose to do a DDT with your left arm. Not the right.

It matters?

Yeah, it does.

:::looks at SUMMERSLAM, ROYAL RUMBLE, etc. price of 34.95:::

:::looks at ARMAGEDDON price of 34.95:::

I expect good build-up and a potential great show.

You may have to go back to 2000 for those types of expectations.

Demott is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000x better than Todd Grisham, Al Snow, the former Velocity dudes Mark Lloyd and Ernest Miller.

He's probably better than Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, The Coach, and J.R. Atleast he puts over the workers during the matches...usually.

Watch Coach/Grisham on Heat. Not only do they completely ignore every match, they talk about stupid shit like who's suppose to be the woman in their love nest that night.

Well, keep in mind that there are 3 types of buyers:

Those that buy only the big 4(RR, WM, Survivor Series, Summer Slam) every signle year on name only. Those that buy every single PPV, and those that decide on a month to month basis which ones to buy.

The big 4, especially Wrestlemania, are doing to do resaonably well-very well year in and year out. It's PPVs likes this, and Taboo Tuesday, that need to be scrapped.

Or, at the very least, need to be made to seem more important.

Like, insted of Armaggedon...how about WWE Presents Starrcade 2005!

Rename them In Your House and lower the price to $25.

A better idea is to name them all "Wrestlemania" and raise the price to $50.

I just want to chime in and say that London/Akio was a fantastic match. They didn't have boatloads of time or name recognition going in, but that crowd was digging that match by the end. Wrestling DOES get over with the marks, and that match is absolute proof that they don't need to do stupid diva bikini crap every week to entertain the casual viewers.

In those 6 minutes, London and Akio completely out-did anything anybody will do on Armageddon. Kudos to them.

Meltzer just reported that Akio and London were fined $15,000 each for their match on Velocity. That's $5,000 more than Holly was fined. Apparently, their match was too good, and they were told to tone it down to match "the WWE style".

You should have just bumped the 'You're Fired' thread. Would have made WWE sense atleast.

Paul London vs Akio

And here it is! The match that got rave reviews during the tapings, but to be honest, those reviews didn't even do this one justice. It's pretty much a given that these two would work a great match, but MOTY-worthy? On Velocity? Actually, given the background history these two have on Velocity, it was possible. Akio and Paul London have worked one singles match against each other here on Velocity in the past, in I believe September '04, and believe it or not, Akio was the first person London ever pinned on WWE television, which came in a tag match. That was also the first time London successfully hit the 450 splash on WWE TV (Kidman & London vs Akio & Sakoda from earlier this year).

Of course, no Akio match without Josh talking about his movie career, as he plugs his latest movie here about him being a Korean farmer in Austelle, Georgia, but does not mention the plot is about him getting revenge on scarecrows for kidnapping his girlfriend's daughter. I think that was it. To the match now as we get a tie-up to start, with both men ending up on the ground for a bit before heading into the corner. [Canadian] referee Jimmy Korderes breaks it up, but it does not go clean as Akio shoves his nemesis. Man, that Akio, what a bad ass. London, in turn, responds with a harder shove, but cannot follow up from there as Akio issues a kick to the mid-section. They go through some reversals next, which concludes with London running Akio to the outside as he was in a wristlock. Bill, meanwhile, acknowledges London's unfinished business with Kidman so hopefully that goes somewhere in the near-future. As Akio re-enters, London greets him with kicks and an arm-bar. Akio flips out and scores with a leg-sweep, allowing him to take advantage with a headlock. This leads to a shoulder block, but as Akio tries to race off the ropes soon after, London trips him up from the mat and cinches in a front-face lock. Akio whips him away and takes a chance by ducking, but London makes him pay with the MUSHROOM STOMP. A dropkick later sends Akio outside, and London sets up for some high-risk offense as he stomps significantly loud. Shades of some WWE cartoon gimmick from 1995! London runs off the ropes and flies through the air with an awesome somersault plancha to the outside, in which he almost over-jumped Akio! He still clearly hits him, though, and they go back in now, where London attempts a kick. Here's where it gets insane. Akio catches London's foot and flips him, but since it was by the ropes, London's feet bounce off the ropes and he lands on his HEAD. "HOLY [bleep]!" said Josh, rightfully so. That definitely had to be the sickest bump of the year, and I think that was the first time in recent memory where an announcer got bleeped on the air. As for that bump, believe it or not, that may have actually been planned because I didn't see Jimmy Korderes check on London not once, and Akio continued on offense as if nothing had happened. Either way, just the fact that London continued from there is unbelievable. So Akio gets his offense going as he whips London into the corner, where he nails him with a spinning heel kick. He skins the cat back in and works the snapmare/chinlock combo. He does not keep it on long, however, as he releases the hold to whack London with a jumping enziguiri (Ghettoblaster!), and that's gets two. Akio now plays with London a bit slapping him in the back of the head, and I guess Yang will enjoy every second of that, considering his last and only victory of his WWE career came in December '03. Taking his time, though, gives London a chance to come back. London reverses an Irish-whip into the corner, and despite receiving a face-full of boot on the charge, he still manages to hit the running Akio with the side-salto kick on the follow-up, and both men are down. Here's what really makes this match as fabulous as it was. Akio and London get up at around the same time and just start hitting each other as HARD AS POSSIBLE, going chop-for-chop, punch-for-punch, kick-for-kick. Stiff shots all around, with their chests turning beat-red, but the whole time, London just kept yelling for more. On commentary, Bill and Josh were just silent the entire time, enjoying the 30+ seconds of Ring of Honor-esque action, and Bill called it one of the best exchanges he had ever seen. London finally gains the upper hand with stronger kicks, and after ducking an A-Kick-io attempt, he connects with the dropsault. Akio winds up in the corner, where he still fights back with a back elbow to the face of London. With that done, Akio immediately runs up top and performs a picture-perfect moonsault onto the standing Paul London. That gets two. He tries something from a waistlock position right after, but to no avail as London fights him off and hits him with a beeeautiful modified jumping reverse kick. "I'm going on record right now, saying I don't care if there's a winner. This is the best damn match I've seen in a long time," says Bill. Ditto that for me. London, meanwhile, heads up to the high-rik district, where Akio catches up and crotches him. He heads up top as well, but before he can attempt a top-rope hurricanrana, London punches him off. As Akio gets back to his feet, London catches him off the second-rope and just spikes him with a DDT in the mid-air for the hard-fought victory. Josh calls it a "five-star match," and while that may not be true, it was still one of the best matches of the year, even though it only got eight minutes. Let me just say this: I've been doing Jakked/Metal and Velocity for five or six years now, and in all that time, this may have been *the* BEST match I have ever reviewed. This is what wrestling is all about, and for putting on an tremendous performance like that, Akio and Paul London deserve some a ton of credit. Thank you for giving me the pleasure of recapping this match (Just as I'm sure Bill and Josh thanked them for the pleasure of being able to call it), and if they don't get some kind of acknowledgment or push for their efforts, then there is definitely something wrong within WWE creative. Just an amazing match.

Winner: Paul London
