-The Aviator

Looks like next week will be a busy one.

It's going to 1,000 screens next week.

I don't think it will play very well because the movie is really depressing and upsetting and it's NOT a date movie or a nice XMas movie.

I can't wait for Lemony Snickett though

Lemony Snickets, I think, is going to destroy everything else next weekend.

Predictions? I'm guessing somewhere around the 50 million range.

I'll say between 35 and 40 million for Snicket but I can see it getting between 45 and 50 as well.

I'll go 39 million.

I'm estimating $12.35 for Spanglish, making it the lowest grossing movie ever.

From what I have seen from the repetitive commercials, there is absolutely no plot to this movie and no stars I would pay to see.

City by the Sea is only on 6 screens? You'd think it'd get more considering all the pub Spacey is doing for it.

It's getting limited Oscar qualifying release and will go wide at the end of the year-early January assuming it does in its limited run.

Spanglish is going to need good critical reviews- which isn't ending. Brooks is a big name and people associate him with quality movies which should help.

Snickett will do at least 50 million- its only competition is people who haven't seen the Polar Express

Snikett: 15-25 million.

Spanglish: 12-13 million.

Flight of the Phoenix: 8-11 million.

From last week's thread:

Next week:

1. Ocean's Twelve (Anywhere from 45-60million opening weekend)

2. Blade: Trinity

3. National Treasure

4. The Polar Express

5. Christmas With The Kranks/Closer

15-25 million for Snickett? Are you kidding me?

It's based on a very popular children's book series.

It has Jim Carrey.

The last Jim Carrey comedy opened to 67.9 million.

So how is this movie only making 15-25 million with National Treasure officially fading and Polar Express the only real competition

No, i'm not actually.

Between 15-30 at the most. Though, it'll probably hold up well during the holidays.

Doesn't look interesting AT ALL.

15-30 is a big range though. I mean- come on.

It may not look interesting to you but it has a huge built in audience. The Lemony Snickett books are wildly popular- in fact they knocked the Harry Potter books off the top.

It also has Jim Carrey who appeals to everyone. The movie looks like it's Jim having lots of fun and being crazy which is what sells his movies and makes them hits.

There's no competition for the movie. Everyone's seen National Treasure and the Incredibles so the kids will come out for this one.

Yeah, big range. But I can't see it doing the numbers you guys are predicting.

I work with kids, and i've seen more of a response for The Polar Express, The Incredibles, even Spongebob Squarepants than I have for this.

As I said, it'll do at least 30 million opening weekend and hold up well during the holidays. But 50 million? No way.

Okay- fair enough.

I just think you're underestimating the Lemony Snickett series (second only to Harry Potter) and Jim Carrey's box office potential.

40-50 mil is my prediction. I wouldn't be shocked if it does more

I never heard of Lemony Snickett. Is it novels or some kids picture books?

A movie advertised as comedic and starring Jim Carrey

If they build it, people will come.

I would not be shocked if Lemony Snicket did in the $70-80 million dollar range. I have not read the books, but the Harry Potter films made a ton and this one has Jim Carrey attached on top of it. I don't think it will make quite as much as Potter, but it could come close.

I don't think it'll come close to Potter, but it looks like a movie that could get many different age groups.

It won't have the staying power of Potter, but it could approach it for opening weekend. The second one anyways. I realize it won't get near what Azkaban did in its opening.

It could have a run in the top three for at least three weeks. The only other "family movie" in that time frame is Fat Albert, and I don't think it's going to do that well.
