Underrated Match of the Year???

Recommended Posts

I think Eddie/Angle from WMXX dosen't get the praise it deverses. I loved this match, it told a great story, lots of near falls, and many times in the match I thought it was over and yet they suprised me with a kick out. The crowd was very good for this and it was completey mixed. Just as much people cheering for Angle as there were people cheering Eddie. That match was the definition of a mixed crowd. And the finish was great with Eddie outsmarting Angle, and it was not a clean finish but yet made both wrestlers look good in the process. That's why I have this match problay for match of the year. The Triple Threat at WMXX and Backlash were great, but I wasn't into it as much as the Eddie/Angle match.

I couldn't agree with you any further. I was on the edge of my seat and I was furious when Angle kicked out of the Frog Splash after Eddie had already attempting to do the move like 2 to 3 times beforehand. It was hard for me to take Angle as a heel again since I was used to him being a babyface, but I'm glad Eddie retained.

I prefer the Summerslam match personally. Mania's lacklustre build-up killed what should have been a RED-HOT match. In my opinion, if built right, it could have rivalled Hart/Austin. Instead, it was a good match that had so much more potential. The ending was bad too. Not to sound too anal over attention to detail, but Angle pulling off the boot was unnatural as he really had to pull the boot off in a way not be-fitting the Ankle Lock.

If we're talking underrated, then we have to add in the matches like Orton/Val from Heat and Akio/London from Velocity, as so few people saw them. Maybe Noble/London too, even though that gets a lot of love on here. Also, I really liked Kidman/London at No Mercy. VERY good match that proved to me London could work 'WWE style'.

Orton/Beniot at Summerslam dosn't nearly get enough love.

I, personally liked the 2/3 Falls match on a SD withEddy/Angle best. It was defiantly the best finish, and I thought told a way better story without the pointless dead moments.

Orton/Benoit from SSlam. The fact that people like the Raw match the next night better, which consisted of Benoit being angry and stringing together every signature move he knew followed by an Evo run-in that totally killed anything Randy had built from going toe to toe with Benoit legit the night before baffles me. While fun, the Raw match pailed in comparison.

The match is off from the normal cut and paste style of most PPV title matches and albiet a short match, it turned out to be fantastic.

Benoit & Edge winning the tag titles from Flair & Batista on Raw was great.

Rey vs Noble on Velocity was great and people seem to have forgotten it.

La Resistance vs Edge/Benoit was an AWESOME match (where La Resistance beat them for the belts) ***3/4 or so for that TV match.

Yeah and add to the fact that in was in Montreal and La Resistance got a huge pop when they won was pretty cool.

Eddie/JBL from the Great American Bash.

It was much better than the match at Judgment Day, the finish was worked to perfection, and the Texas Bullrope match stipulation worked a lot better than expected. Not a lot of people seemed to like it because the PPV blew ass for the most part, but alone and by itself, I think people would appreciate it more. It wasn't a ***** classic by any means, but it wasn't a total abomination like some of the other shit on that card.

Kane/Benoit from Badd Blood. Kane's best match ever, and completely overshadowed the main event from a quality standpoint.

The Raw Re-match was better than HBK/HHH HIAC even. GOd that match sucked.

Though not a fantastic match, I liked the concept and execution of the Smackdown relay match they had in August, I'd love for it to make a return. It would certainly be more interesting than your usual six man tag, that's for sure.

I've long been a fan of Orton's matches but they dont seem to get the praise they deserve from net fans IMO.

His matches against Foley at Backlash and Edge on Raw the night he lost the title stand out for me.

I still don't get the love for Angle/Eddie at Wrestlemania or the SummerSlam match.

Then again, I've watched Flair/Steamboat ten times to see why it's called the best ever and don't get that either.

Randy Orton Vs Val Venis was criminally underlooked on HEAT.

Not many people watch the B-Shows (the bastards) so they tend to ignore them. I didn't catch that match, what time frame was it (May-ish?)?

I actually think the HiaC is underrated. It did go long, but it had some real good nods to their feud and used a lot of sound psychology.

Triple H using three pedigrees as his trump card, Michaels being stoic in losing, and able to walk out on his own. Justin Baiseden wrote a really good write up of the match awhile ago that thought along the same lines.

HIAC would have been better with more heat, or at least seemed better with more heat. If they piped in crowd noise on the DVD, it probably comes off much better. But the dead crowd hurt the match quite a bit.

The Jericho/Christian cage match from RAW in May was a hell of a match and has gone largely unpraised, as has Jericho/Edge on RAW the week before Summerslam. I liked Benoit/Orton on RAW the night after Summerslam quite a bit. Another standout is Benoit/Jericho/Edge v Orton/Batista/Flair (not the neverending elimination match, but the other one a month or so later).

May 2nd, yeah.

Orton/Benoit's probably one of my matches of the year and I agree on JBL/Eddie too. I'm not sure if it's a question of them being underrated, or just painted over by the anti Orton and JBL comments that fill the board.
