Modern Cowboys...

Recommended Posts

Ok I didn't really know what to call them. But what does everyone think of the modern "cowboy" attitude that I've seen around.

I mean I know this isn't just a southwestern thing. These guys are on TV to.

I'm not talking about guys that walk around in tight jeans with a cowboy hat on. I'm talking about guys with the redneck attitude that think they can do whatever, they're always kind of grungy, they're always drinking or dipping and just have this hot shit attitude about them. But it's not like a cocky attitude.

And these people don't have to be from the Southwest. They can come from anywhere.

The reason I ask is that I saw a play tonight by Sam Sheperd called "True West" about a couple of guys with this attitude. Someone else may be able to describe it better than me. I mean Kid Rock thinks he has this attitude and style down....

But I was just wondering what everyone on the board thinks of these people? And if anyone is one of these people? I mean do you know anybody that you could see being in a western?

yeah, fake cowboys...the ones here in Nebraska all wear wranglers, cowboy boots, stupid hats, drive overly sized, retardedly huge trucks...they speak with fake southern accents (there are no accents in Nebraska so for someone who has LIVED HIS WHOLE LIFE HERE to have one is ludacris)...I'm gonna buck this trend of wearing a cowboy costume all year round and start wearing a pirate outfit and shouting "ARRRRRRRR" all day long...SHIVER ME TIMBERS MUTHAFUCKAS!

Fuck off, you're from Rhode Island. Son of the soil indeed. More like son of Soil, the lame band.

Um, Sam Shepard wrote True West in 1980. I've seen a handful of people wearing cowboy hats, but that play isn't really a good contemporary example.

Well I know that it's nothing new but watching it I saw the attitude and lifestyle personified and realized how much I saw it around me.

Honestly I like the "cowboy" mentality more than the "thug" mentality.

*listens to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson*

I find it hilarious all these guys that buy this big huge oversized trucks and slap a "Redneck" sticker on the back window as if that is somesort of badge of courage, when in reality all it is is a bullseye for halloween eggings.

Cowboy hats are western. I'm more midwestern grimy clodhopper. There might be an american flag bandanna in there, but I don't wear any headgear other than my Klan hood, really.

Modern midwest = mid 19th century west

Being an almost lifelong Kansan, I feel a small connection with the states cowboy history.

I've never worn the boots though...

That's completely incorrect. The modern midwest greaser is more improvisational, devious, and greasy than the traditional western cowpoke. I'd consider the great plains area more western than the midwest, since it is geographically. The current midwestern hillbilly thing is much more southern, really. Indiana is unique in its location and attitude, with differences even with peoples as close as Kentucky. Interestingly enough, Northern Indiana and Southern Indiana are totally different hicks.

Not even a cigarette company/alcohol brand/John Deere mesh hat?

I'm no corporate schill.

Analogy:

Western Cowboy stereotype-Marlboro Man

Midwestern Hillbilly stereotype-Dale Earnhardt

Southern Hillbilly stereotype-Jed Clampett

That's completely incorrect.

I was referring to geography, not demographics

Also, the great plains are the midwest, as far as I'm concerned. I can't fathom calling any state east of the Mississippi River (like Illinois or Indiana) "midwest"

I thought a hillbilly was something that you found in the Ozark mountains or something.

I was under the impression most midwesterners or southwesterners were rednecks.

You know there's one thing that the modern cowboys just can't pull of and that's how to be cool.

I mean these guys slap their "Cowboy Up" sticker on the back of their truck and do a little dip and think that they're the baddest motherfucker to every put on a cowboy hat.

"Cowboy/Cowgirl Up" and "Save a horse ride a cowboy" have got to be the dumbest combination of words i have ever witnessed or experienced in all my years...

Well I agree with you.

I like Cowboy hats though but I hate tight jeans, whatever the hell those shirts they wear are, and cowboy boots.

So I never wear a cowboy hat....I don't even own one. As a matter of fact I only own 3 hats. 2 OU ones and a Batman hat.

*ponders trying out the cowboy hat*

Nah...
