The NFL Head Coach Hot Seat

Recommended Posts

I think we can officially add Tice to the hot seat list now, oh and Saban has been officially offered the Dolphins' job. It's up to him to make a decision.

I'm hoping the Vikings will get the chance to make an offer to Saban, although last word I remember was that he had no intention of leaving LSU

I think Cleveland, San Francisco and Miami (obviously) will be the only teams with new coaches next year. I guess an outside shot in Seattle if Holmgren finds a way not to make the playoffs.

On a radio show, some beat writer for the Saints thought Haslett's job was safe because it wouldn't look good for the owner to fire him and pay out 5-7 million dollars while asking for money for Superdome renovations.

I'll throw out my picks for new coaches:

Miami: Nick Saban

San Francisco: Romeo Crennel (York is cheap, and its cheaper to hire a coordinator)

Cleveland: Who knows what a mess of a franchise. The team has not been playing like they want Robiskie to stay so his chances are nill. Maybe give a shout out to Jim Fassel, but I bet he waits another year.

To be honest, I don't think Haslett's to blame solely for the horrid year they've had. They really need to work on that defense, even with the addition of Mike McKenzie, it doesn't seem to have helped much.

San Francisco: Romeo Crennel

I hate you.... ;)

Seriously though, we've already lost Weiss, and Crennel deserves a head coaching job too. I'd be pissed, but I'd also root my heart out for the guy, just like I'll be doing for Notre Dame now.

And I actually thing San Fran is a perfect fit for him, good call. Pick up a good O coordinator and he could probably get something good going, they've got some decent players out there, especially on D, just haven't been able to put it all together. Make some smart moves in the draft and FA and they're an instant contender in a very sketchy NFC west.

Great news for Lions, Packers, and Bears fans!

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Tice will return for at least one more year, and nothing short of a lucrative contract extension could make him happier.

Timing is everything: Mike Tice's contract status needed addressing by Saturday, one day before Minnesota's regular-season finale at Washington.

Despite a second straight late-season slide, the Vikings on Monday picked up Tice's $1 million option for 2005, ending much speculation about the coach's future.

"I'm pleased," Tice said. "I want to remain the football coach of this football team because we've come a long way in three years."

Tice would have become a free agent Jan. 31 if the club failed to exercise the option by Saturday -- one day before Minnesota's regular-season finale at Washington.

Instead, the 45-year-old coach will have a chance to improve his 23-25 record and reverse his team's reputation for fading down the stretch.

The Vikings raced to a 6-0 start in 2003, Tice's second full season, but finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. They are headed in a similar direction this year, having lost six of their past nine games, but at 8-7 still have a good shot at a wild-card berth.

"Although our expectation of winning the division was not met, we feel that the program Mike Tice has guided gives us the talent base to have success today and in the future," owner Red McCombs said in a statement Monday. "Our expectations are high for the upcoming playoffs and for next year."

Widely known as a player's coach, Tice has absorbed much of the blame for the Vikings' problems on and off the field, but the team's stars have supported him publicly.

Despite a 33 percent raise from his reported $750,000 salary this season, Tice will remain one of the NFL's lowest-paid head coaches.

For now, Tice is focused on taking the Vikings back to the playoffs.

"We just keep fighting the fight," Tice said. "Hopefully, when it's all said and done, you've accomplished a whole bunch."

Seriously, why the fuck did they ever fire Dennis Green? For christ's sake that guy is actually coming close to turning the Cardinals into a winner.

THE CARDINALS.

"I want to remain the football coach of this football team because we've come a long way in three years."

That's priceless.

What's with the overuse of "football" as an adjective in football? A sentence like, "to win this football game, the football team is going to need the football coach to get his football players to pass the football and run the football and get the football in the endzone" is perfectly normal to hear, but come on! Completely redundant. You wouldn't expect winning the football game to come via the basketball team's soccer coach getting his hockey players running the baseball and passing the puck, thereby getting the pit crew in the endzone, so why the unnecessary distinctions? Personally, I think they just love saying the word "football." I guess I can't blame them. To eliminate this problem, I recommend that commentators spend ten minutes before each game bellowing "FOOOOOOOTBAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!" at the top of their lungs before going on the air so as to quell any urges to say that delightful f-word.

I was talking more about how he says they've "come a long way" when in fact they haven't done shit, and considering the talent on that team their mediocrity may as well be labeled regression. But yeah, the overuse of "football" cracked me up too

I wouldn't mind seeing Crennel in San Francisco, next year.

He can't be any worse than Dennis Erickson.

A blind deaf mute can't be worse than Erickson.

Initially, I'd heard that Tice had only been given a "vote of confidence", which in the NFL is essentially "dead coach walking". Then I heard that they actually picked up his option and my heart sank, but my guess is that McCombs likes him because he's a cheap option (I believe Tice is one of if not the lowest paid coach in the NFL) and would rather rehire him than have to spend money to get a real coach.

As for Dennis Green, much as I did like him, most of the Viking populace had become rather tired of him by the time of his firing.

Well good then, I hope you're happy now when the Cardinals beat the Vikings in the 2006 NFC Championship game.

Tice is easily the lowest paid coach in the league at a "puny" $1 mil per year. I believe there are 17 coordinators that make more than him. Keeping a low-paid coach is an easy choice for McCombs, especially if he's still looking to sell the team.
