JJMc 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2004 Today, I was watching Fox Sports Net and they were interviewing some football player. They were doing a five questions type deal and they asked who his "favorite WWF villain" was, while dsiplaying same on the bottom of the screen the whole time. I find it hilarious that they have no idea about the name change and that the Fund really can't do anything about it. It shows that people still associate "WWF" with the Fed and probably will for a long time. I can just imagine some Fund person watching and throwing a tantrum. CanadianGuitarist 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Amen to the bit about the Fund tantrum. I have to admit I never call it WWE. However, in the media, it should be called WWE. Editors and what have you. As a journalism major, accuracy and, um, up to date-ed-ness is stressed vigourously.
Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I still call it the WWF. Also, although it's not true in this case, WWF is also used as a general term for pro wrestling, usually in in a demeaning fashion.
Guest uyaljg Report post Posted December 16, 2004 I call it: WWE. And I correct people who call it: WWF. I don't think it's catching on.
Kizzo 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2004 Actually it is catching on a little bit... I know when it was first renamed some still referred to it as WWF....but I do notice in magazines when they mention wrestling...they say WWF...errr I mean WWE...... It will take time...once WWE hits mainstream again...the public will catch on....its only been 2 years since the company changed its name....you gotta remember the name WWF has 24 years behind it......and I'm surprised that the new name is catching up so fast with some people... Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted December 17, 2004 I almost never say "WWF" anymore, unless I'm reffering to events pre-May 2002 (I won't for example, call Survivor Series 1992 "WWE Survivor Series 1992"). Anytime after that I always reffer to it as "WWE" (without the in front of it). I slipped a lot about it when the change first happend, but I've gotten over that. I won't correct people who use the term "the WWF" still, since it's been around for years and people are too used to saying it.

It shows that people still associate "WWF" with the Fed and probably will for a long time. I can just imagine some Fund person watching and throwing a tantrum. That was the main issue, AFAIK, with the Fund's latest lawsuit. People still consider pro wrestling to be WWF just because of the association it's had for years. The Fund's still upset at it and blames the WWE for that. Their latest lawsuit, IMO, falls nicely under the definition of "silly".

Another part of the agreement was that the World Wrestling Federation couldn't market themselves as the "WWF" overseas. Of course, McMahon expanded internationally and marketed himself as the WWF. O yeah and Jericholic, Jim Ross and other commentators called it the "WWF." If you notice, through the 80s-mid 90s, it is refered to as the "World Wrestling Federation" by commentators to avoid breaking the agreement. By the time that Attitude hit, the Federation got cocky and began openly using "WWF," and that's why we are here today with the WWE. (Just a minor tip, could you use better grammar and spelling when you post? It makes your post a little easier to read)

Steve J. Rogers 0 Report post Posted December 27, 2004 I still call it the WWF. Also, although it's not true in this case, WWF is also used as a general term for pro wrestling, usually in in a demeaning fashion. Also the name "Hulk Hogan" is also forever associated with any wrestling event as well Case in point, before the big Michael Jordan "Number Retirement Night" in the summer/early Fall 1994 at the United Center in Chicago an ESPN anchor said that the building actually opened a few days eariler with a "Hulk Hogan Wrestling Event" I had stopped following wrestling a few years before and wouldn't pick it up again untill around 1996, but I did know Hogan was in WCW at that point in time and so I thought it was a WCW event. Then I found the internet and sites like http://www.prowrestlinghistory.com which gives you all the Supercards and Tournaments in major wrestling "modern era" history and I found out that it was a WWF Event, not a WCW event and Hogan was no where in the building! It was of course SummerSlam 94 that featured: Adam Bomb beat Kwang. Irwin R. Schyster & Bam Bam Bigelow beat Headshrinkers Samu & Fatu WWF Women's Champ Alundra Blayze pinned Bull Nakano Razor Ramon (seconded by Walter Payton) pinned Diesel Tatanka pinned Lex LugerJeff Jarrett pinned Mabel (5:45). WWF World Champ Bret Hart beat Owen Hart Notice the continued lack of respect for the Hart-Michaels "Next Generation" era of the WWF? and of course the legendary :sarcasm: The Undertaker pinned The Undertaker II Tell you the truth, a Hogan apperance in the Taker-Faker match MIGHT have spiced up the event!
