I don't know about that. Losing Hudson is obviously a huge hit, but the people that are returned in the trade aren't bad at all: - OF Charles Thomas: Had an .813 OPS last year, thanks to (you guessed it) a .368 OBP, and showed a little bit of power (7 home runs in 236 ABs). He's only 25 and last year was his first taste of the show, so he could see some marked improvement in the next few years. - RHP Juan Cruz: I still don't know exactly why the Cubs got rid of this guy. Also 25, he's got 255 strikeouts in 275 career innings. He was way out of his depth as a starter, due to a lack of command, but his stuff has tremendous movement. Depending on what they decide to do with Dotel, they could easily groom Cruz for the closer job. In the meantime, he'll be an asset in middle relief. - LHP Dan Meyer: Another young player at 22 years of age. Meyer barely had enough exposure in a September callup to really gauge his true skills, but his outlook in Baseball Prospectus ("The college product has a tremendous changeup and plus command") and his impressive strikeout rate in the minors could foretell effectiveness in middle relief.

It's owner Steve Schott. He didn't get his postseason revenue this year so he's not allowing any payroll increase at all, in fact it might end up being lower than last year. This is a 100% salary dump. It's almost impossible to get equal value for a player in a walk year and it totally goes against Beane's normal way of doing things. As for who they got Thomas is nothing special and probably just insurance in case Nick Swisher struggles. Meyer is good but he won't make an immediate impact. Cruz will definently help their weak middle relief, unless they plan on trading Dotel to avoid paying him anything in arbitration and then hand Cruz the closer job.

Thomas had some solid stats at the plate with a decent amount of walks and has the ability to cover a ton of territory in the outfield. It seemed, from the Phils/Braves games I saw this year, he was covering as much ground if not more than Jones out there. Not a bad pick up at all. Cruz was covered and I know nothing about Meyer.

Last year the rotation looked meek and it kicked ass as usual...here they got a bona fide ACE. #14. Philadelphia can enjoy it's dogfight with Houston, Chicago and San Diego for the WC.

Bored Posted December 16, 2004 Report Posted December 16, 2004 Maybe. Mecir is retiring and I think with the addition of Cruz they'll non-tender Chad Bradford who has gone from a good set-up man to mediocre specialist in a real hurry. Right now they're hoping Hutson Street is the real deal.

He's often injured, and in the clutch, has had trouble executing. Whenever the A's have needed him most, he has been unavailable. While they didn't get any stars in the deal, they'll plug up some of their weaknesses.

Juan Cruz is basically Victor Zambrano. Charles Thomas can't really hit like he did last year, but he's a good defender. I'll assume everyone already knows about Tim Hudson.

In 350 minor league innings, Dan Meyer has racked up 381 strikeouts compared to just 87 walks, and 24 strikeouts. Cruz gives the Athletics some needed bullpen depth.
