Real World XVI...

From Zap2It.com

MTV's venerable unscripted format is heading deep into the heart of Texas -- where, rumor has it, the stars at night are big and bright -- for its 16th season. Production on "Real World XVI" will begin in Austin in the first quarter of 2005.

"They say everything is bigger and better in Texas, and 'The Real World' is no exception," says Jon Murray, the show's co-creator and president of Bunim-Murray Productions. "Our Austin cast may be the best we've ever assembled, and I know they're going to feel right at home in this vibrant city."

Given the number of problems MTV had while filming "Real World XV" in Philadelphia, the Austin civic leaders seem happy that the rowdiness is coming to their hometown.

"MTV has discovered what we all know, that Austin is a great place to live, work and play," says Will Wynn, Austin's mayor. "We have a spectacular quality of life, particularly if you're young, energetic, educated, driven, and have a passion for the outdoors and live music. I'm excited about the opportunity to showcase our city to viewers around the world."

The Austin season is currently scheduled to premiere its 24-episode run in June, 2005.

The 'Real World' formula of putting seven attractive youngsters in a house, plying them with alcohol and giving them occasional activities continues to pay dividends. The Philadelphia season regularly wins its cable time period in the 12-34 demographic MTV craves, while the show's San Diego season was the most watched in the franchise's history.

The Philadelphia season is set to end on Feb. 22, 2005 and previous installments have been set in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii, New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, Paris, San Diego and Philadelphia.

"Austin is one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the United States," says Lois Curren, executive vice president, MTV Series Entertainment. "As the live music capital of the nation and home to a thriving college community, Austin is the perfect backdrop for 'The Real World's' 16th season."

This season of RW can't end quick enough. I hope that this season is a lot better.

And I wasn't aware that San Diego was the most watched RW ever. I always thought that honor went to Vegas.

Left unsaid but rather obvious: Austin also has a shitload of bars.

I just hop they don't stick the cast in a tequila bar and waste a lot of Don Julio on them...

I often wonder if today's Real World audience would even enjoy the first three seasons of the show, when it was ACTUALLY RELEVENT.

San Fran was featured On Demand during the summer. I never saw it before and only heard good things about it, so I checked it out. Pretty interesting season and it was nice to see what the Real World was supposed to be about.

What is the actual...next season? Like, shouldn't there have been one already filming, about to end soon, as this one's on? Like Philly was finished like..while the San Diego season was still going on.

In that case, this season would be perfect for a hardcore straight-edge type to be cast, just to get into conflict with the other six castmates who drink almost every single day.

I'd be more charitable and go to the first six instead of the first three. Seasons four, five, and six were pretty realistic even though one could see the hand of stunt manipulation in five and six.

That being said, I'd easily argue season four to be the most "real" real world since you had a bunch of regular people who didn't follow the standard reality show cliches and who acted in a really real manner. Which, as it was elegantly stated by one of the cast members when E! did their E! True Hollywood Story special on the Real World, was why they went towards stunt casting and crazy gimmicks with all future seasons.

And seasons five and six have their bright spots that redeemed them. Season five was a classic train wreck with regards to early reality tv that shows how stupid a shitload of people can be and season six had the cast working a normal job (IE with kids in an after school program and not some glamor job) and featured a cast that was a good social experiment regarding casting introverts and wild partiers.

Well I consider the first four seasons the PURE seasons, because the show was still in it's infancy and the formula was a lot different, even though the camera crew still did plenty of fancy editing and manipulation back then too. I think season FOUR was the main reason the production crew decided to change things up, because while Season 4(london) still felt "pure" it was extremely boring. Season 5 in Miami was good except it introduced the new stupid gimmick of having a job, and it also sucked that Melissa, who is one hell of a hot cuban, was so determined to keep her real self hidden away from the cameras due to a strict conservative up bringing and fear of her family seeing her being herself. I'd say even Seattle could be considered pure too, I mean the whole Irene situation and how she came out against the Real World and "Reality TV" afterwards was quite a thing to take notice over. I guess it is mainly the last four seasons or so, that have basically had the same gimmick, with just seven different people.
