.....or is something wrong with me? It seems part romantic comedy, part buddy movie, part drama etc....Normally this type of movie would not interest me, but I find myself strangley wanting to see this. Maybe it is my respect for Paul Giamatti. When does this movie come out anyone know? Here is the trailer for those that haven't seen it..........

EDIT: oh I see it is out already in select theaters.

Does anyone else find it kind of cool that Thomas Hayden Church, best known for playing Lowell on "Wings", is generating serious oscar buzz?

I'm really looking forward to this one. The director Alexander Payne previously made About Schmidt and Election, two awesome films.

Plus Paul Giamatti is a pretty major dude also.

But since I'll be in Australia soon I'll probably have to wait a few months before I get to see this. :(

Fucking BRILLIANT! Great dialogue, great comedy, excellent characters, and Thomas Haden Church is the man. If he doesn't win Best Supporting Actor, there is no justice in the world.

Could've done without the male full frontal nudity, but besides that it was fantastic. A++ indeed.

I wanted to see both Sideways and Closer this holiday season, and I think I ended up liking Closer only because of the dialogue better. I absolutely loved the perfect balance of comedy and drama used in Sideways, and Paul Giamatti is an awesome actor. Has anyone else here enjoyed American Splendor? If you haven't seen it, and want to get a bit more insight on how well the man mimics a character, check out his portrayal of Harvey Pekar in that film.

The golf course scene was the funniest part for me.

It's released in Australia on something like the 26th of January. No idea if you'll be here then, but just thought I'd let you know.

Wow, I was impressed. Paul Giamatti was pretty impressive here, but I was also suprised with the performance of Thomas Haden Church, he was very good as well. The ending was very appropriate as well.

*Bump*

Finally saw the film tonight, beautiful, funny and touching. I can think of no more heartbreaking scene than when Miles screws up Maya's advances towards him when they're talking about wine (and really themselves), goes to the bathroom and comes out and tries to recapture the moment, but it's passed for Maya, at least he got it a couple nights later. This film reminded me a lot of Billy Wilder's work and I could've seen Wilder doing this film in the 70's with Jack Lemmon as Miles and Walter Matthau as Jack.

Having seen all Best Picture nominees, for me, it'd go

Aviator

Sideways & Million Dollar Baby (tie)

Ray

Finding Neverland

all are good films as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I feel only The Aviator and Sideways were the only enjoyable movies out of the whole bunch.

Saw it yesterday, excellent stuff. Alexander Payne's sense of timing is down-right unbelievable, I don't think he takes a faulty step throughout the entire film. Equally impressive is his ability to balance the comic and tragic elements in the film, and to quickly switch between them, absolutely seamlessly.

If I were voting in the Oscars I'd definitely pick Sideways, though I also loved Million Dollar Baby. I liked The Aviator but it's not even close to those two, in my opinion.

(I'm seeing Ray tonight, and didn't get a chance to see Finding Neverland).
