Title for Bond 21 announced

Recommended Posts

Guest thebigjig

I didn't see this listed here, but according to the Official James Bond Website, the new Bond film will be Casino Royale and will be directed by Martin Campbell, director of Goldeneye and the Mask of Zorro

I was rooting for Tarrantino, but Campbell isn't bad I guess

no offense, but Tarantino will never direct a Bond film.

Ever.

So who is James Bond this time?

My fingers are crossed for Chris Rock or DMX.

And yes, I'm serious.

Time to bring to an end this "James Bond is white" stereotype.

Um, doesn't Bond die in Casino Royale? Or was that the first Fleming book?

Wasn't there already a Casino Royale? Or am I only thinking about the Woody Allen one?

Clive Owen appears to be the (current, anyways) front runner to play Bond next.

Too bad Jason Staltham doesn't fit the Bond profile. I'd like to see him give it a shot.

I'd be down with that if, and only if, they played it straight. No "Chris Rock Bond" crap. In fact the best way to do that would be to NEVER MENTION THAT HE'S BLACK. Just write the script for BOND not for BLACK BOND. Anything else would just suck all kinds of ass (fat ass, thin ass, stinky ass, clean ass, ALL kinds).

To do that, they'd need to retcon that "James Bond" is simply the alias used by Agent 007. Which frankly, isn't all that difficult. And to that end, they could just promote Colin Salmon up into the role.

If he gets the role, he might want to drop out of any other projects he's working on. He's probably still kicking himself for dropping out of X-Men because shooting for MI:2 went long...

That would make no sense. If you watch the movies closely it is obvious it's the same guy. Just the last movie had a bunch of references to his past missions...

That's stupid. The point is that the character is a British detective, and to make it accurate, they only use British actors. If you've got a black British actor to play the role and they play it straight, then fine.

But if Chris Rock or DMX played James Bond, I would never watch the movie, ever.

There's nothing that says that the current James Bond hasn't been briefed on everything that his predecessors have done. In-jokes and nods to the past can probably be ignored fairly easily - after all the Bond series isn't one where continuity is incredibly tight - so playing a little loose with who "James Bond" would not create many ripples, I think.

Besides, they've changed Ms and Qs without much fuss, so why not Bonds?

M and Q are just titles and positions. It makes sense that the old ones would retire and new ones would take over.

To try to say that Bond is just a title would be a lot different. How would you explain it? That each actor has been a different Bond? That doesn't work. There's more than just "in jokes", like In For Your Eyes Only you have Moore visiting the grave of the wife who married the Lazenby Bond.

I wouldn't have a problem with a black actor playing Bond if it was done seriously and not as a joke or gimmick but the best thing to do would just be to not "explain" it at all. You don't need to. It's established and accepted by the fans that Bond changes actors every 4 or so movies and that he is timeless. He started out in the cold war and now it's modern day and he still hasn't aged. That's just Bond. There is no need to make up some explination. Trying to say it's been different guys would go against the past movies and make him harder to accept.

Well, how do they explain that each Bond looks slightly different? They don't. So how would they explain that Bond is just the name for Agent 007? They don't. As a franchise, they've been willing to add and drop things as necessary, so why not the idea that James Bond has always been the one person?

M and Q are just titles and positions. It makes sense that the old ones would retire and new ones would take over.

So, by that logic, it makes sense that a Bond could retire and another could take his place. Thank you.

Don Cheadle as Bond would get me in the theater.

You get an Oscar nominated actor and switches up the series a little bit.

And someone mentioned Dougray Scott...where the hell did he go anyway?

Because it makes no sense in the context of the Bond universe and isn't necessary. The audience accepts that he looks different and never ages. So why bother coming up with an explination for him looking different again? Why change 40 years of history if you don't have to? I mean, ok, you COULD, but WHY?

Also, if you say it's a different guy people wouldn't see him as the true Bond. I know I wouldn't. It would just put even more emphasis on the fact that he's black. The best way to make a black Bond accepted is NOT to make a big deal out of it.

He can a do a bloody awful British accent.

It's like listening to Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

See, now you're finally asking the correct question. The thing is, there isn't an answer to "Why?". If they wanted to do it, they would. I just gave you the "how", if they decided to.

He can a do a bloody awful British accent.

It's still better than Kevin Costner's...

Ok, I'll give you that. It was like he didn't even attempt to sound English.

He did. Basically he knew he couldn't do a British accent, so he didn't bother.

Cheadle was (I think) going for a Liverpudlian accent but it really wasn't there. To be honest, it seemed like an in-joke of some sort with the Ocean's Eleven bunch.

Roger Moore was the only James Bond to actually be British.

At least if they're going to give a faithful rendition of 'Casino Royale', then they've hopefully decided not to make another 'Die Another Day'-style Bond film, and return to a more down-to-earth Bond, a la 'For Your Eyes Only' following 'Moonraker' and 'Living Daylights' following 'View to a Kill'.

Roger Moore was probably the only Bond to be English. Connery's a Brit, and I suppose Dalton and Lazenby are as well, but I think Brosnan's Irish.
