Playstation2 woes...

Recommended Posts

My PS2 is ill.

Please pray or add advice for it.

Here's my story:

Tonight after work, I went to play a DVD and it started out fine, but a few minutes into it, it just stopped all of a sudden and all this driver info and stuff flashed on the screen, like it was trying to function, but nothing was happening.

So, I took the disc out and cleaned it off, just to be sure, and I also blew into the slot and all that jazz, to make sure there was no dust or shit inside the disc area. So, I pop it back in and it starts to play just fine, so as I was rejoycing the fact that it worked again, it fucks up on me again. This time, it just stops all together and a black screen appears with "This function can not be performed" on it.

So, I decided to check my PS2 games and see if they function properly, and they do. All perfectly fine and runs as good as ever. But again, the DVD player doesn't work.

Agh.

What the fuck?

I've never had ANY problems with my PS2 at all, and now this. Please, somebody tell me whats the dilly-o with this. Is it common? Any ideas? Anything at all.

Thanks,

Bif

It's the first step in a fast moving process that ends with you buying a new PS2.

DVD player goes first.

Blue back discs goes next.

Eventually it catches fire.

Games play fine though.

Some other DVDs are working now too..

No, he's right.

You're headed for the crash.

It's the main reason I stopped using my PS2 for DVD viewing, it just seems to fry the stupid thing faster.

Get an Xbox. Not only has mine never failed me, but apparently they're also bulletproof.

Try opening it up and cleaning the lens. This is the first time, so that should work. The system will eventually be unable to be saved, but the idea is to keep it alive long enough for the PS3.

The order tends to go DVDs, Blue PS2 Games/PS1 Games, and finally regular PS2 Games. In my experience in the couple of times that I had to clean it, the DVDs start to go a good 6-8 months before the blue discs, and then another year or so to stop playing everything.

I've had the same PS2 for nearly 4 years now and use it constantly for DVDs and games. With proper maintenance the thing works just fine. The problem with the PS2 is that it has a very crappy ventilation system so dust, hair, and other shit can get in there too easily. You have to keep it in a low dust area and clean it every 6 months or so. Blowing in the slot is not a good idea as you're just blowing more shit into it and stirring up the dust that's in it already. You need to open that thing up and clean it with dry cotton swabs. Its not too difficult and there are directions online on how to do it. I believe I found the directions years back using the AskJeeves site.

This is why I should never be suspended. I'm a cache of good information.

That's not quite the problem. The problem is that the laser decreases in intensity over time. It is supposed to read through any amount of dust, but eventually it can no longer do that. If you wait long enough it won't be able to read even through a clean lens.

I believe they fixed this problem in later models, but it is what causes the Disc Read Errors in the first run PS2s.

I agree on the crappy ventilation systems though. The fan broke on my first PS2 and it would overheat and shut off after about 30 minutes of play.

I have a second model PS2. The first ones were all shit...so if he has a first make PS2 then he's fucked.

The second release though works absolutely fine with regular maintenance.

What model PS2 do you have? If you have an older model, the drivers might need to be updated.

I've had my PS2 for four years and have never once experienced any problems with it. I don't do any maintenance on it, I just let it sit on the shelf and that's it.

I have a problem with my PS2 as well. My controllers give either no responce or too much responce. When I try to play Madden 2005, the selection screen highlights the selections, but I am unable the select anything. What's the problem?

It may sound dumb but is the controller plugged all the way in?

Finally, if you've had the controllers for a long time and play a lot then they tend to wear out. I've noticed that my older controller is less responsive than the new one, especially the d-pad.

My playstation 2 was giving me problems. So I called up sony telling them I get disk read errors and I recently mailed my playstation to them so they can fix it free of charge. Hopefully they are able to do so.

I've been lucky so far. I've had my PS2 for 2 years and haven't had a problem yet (I use it to watch DVD's more often than playing games).

If it matters, I have the system set out flat and not on it's side, so that may help contribute to the safety so far.

Yeah, I've had my system laid out flat as well. The whole standing it vertically kind of seems dumb to me. I mean you could easily tip it over and since the PS2 is very delicate, I doubt you want it taking unnecessary bumps.

I went to play a couple of games today and I can't get past the main Menu screen. It just automatically shoots back to the beginning everytime I try and select an option.

Anyone?

For me it was about 2 1/2 years, but it varies with each system and how much you use it.

I believe they fixed this problem in later models, but it is what causes the Disc Read Errors in the first run PS2s.

I think I had a 2nd run PS2, but it gave me a lot of DREs, to the point where the old adjustment trick simply stopped working. So I caved and bought the miniPS2. And I just sold the junked PS2 for $44 on eBay - which actually surprised me (they seem to sell for lower). It's not much, but at least it's around 25% towards the purchase of the new one...

Wow, so I guess this is a widespread problem. I've had my PS2 like 4 years now and just recently certain DVDs won't play, it'll say "Error Reading Disc" when the disc is put in, or occasionally start to play, then reach a certain point, shut off and give the "Error Reading Disc". It's quite annoying. So you're saying that eventually the games will stop playing too!? I take it the warranty doesn't cover this? And this 1st gen, 2nd gen. version discussing is interesting. How do I tell which version I have, and can someone reitirate or link me a tip on how to get the DVDs to work again?

The easiest way is to spend 40-50 bucks and buy a DVD player... pulling double duty was what killed my first PS2.

Well, there is the vertical stand, which unless you're a clutz, are prone to wild flailing seizures or have grabby brats around the house, will absolutely keep it from falling over.

Not saying this about you or anyone here personally, but the whole horizontal vs. vertical thing is silly. No one is certain which way is the "right" way. It's a crapshoot, really, and someone will find just as many people praising or damning vertical as they will horizontal.

With that said, Bif, you should probably start digging a grave for your current PS2. It's most likely done.

Anyways, my PS2 woes have officially come to an end. This afternoon, I traded in my 5 yr old, broken down, not-functioning PS2 for a brand new SLIM-JIM model!

This thing is freakin' sweet.

It's so small, its not even funny.

I also managed to hook it up to its online capabilities, and I must say its pretty underwhelming at first. I mean, I tried SmackDown vs RAW and immediately noticed some lagging in the game play, so I shut that off. Then I started to have a game of ESPN NFL 2K5, and took on some dude who I swear was a professional video gamer. As soon as we started, he went into the Game Plan and began adjusting his roster and settings. Obviously, not his first time.....unlike me.

Anyways, I'd say it will be more enjoyable as I play more. It would also be more interesting to play people you know as well.

Who here has online capabilities?

We should meet up for a game, if possible.

Curiously, where did you trade it in, and how much did you get for it towards the new model?

I'd rather take the bullet than buy an X-BOX.

Then you don't deserve help.
