It's actually about ~21% of the electorate. ~20% are Democrats, 21% are Republicans, and ~59% of the electorate are Independants. It's stunning that a party with only (and I'm using your numbers) 21% of the electorate has been winning Congressional elections and twice outpolled the most popular Dem in years. Stunning. If you want to REALLY believe that 59% of the vote is up for grabs, again, feel free. It's adorable that you're so deluded. But yeah, insult my polysci knowledge, because I don't know shit. Admission is the first step to the solution. Insulting 20% of the population that isn't going to vote for you anyways in a NY newspaper that nobody outside of NYC reads is TERRIBLE!!! He'll be a HORRIBLE DNC CHAIRMAN, DESPITE ALL LOGIC! Do you think Zell Miller is really that unusual? Do you think that the few conservative Dems who are still there will stick around when they have a head who clearly has little use for them? Do you think a man who is even more divisive than McAuliffe will be able to stem the bleeding? I know you like to claim this --- but Dean is not in the same ballpark as a moderate. He's also shown a remarkable inability to actually reach out to the South --- which, like it or not, is killing the DNC. And I suppose it's strange that a Southern Democrat who opposes the Democrat candidate for President SUDDENLY develops racial problems that didn't really exist before. I have his statements SINCE the primaries. I have the actions of some of his loudest defenders. I have the already idiotic actions of the Democrats (do they REALLY think that continuing to filibuster judicial nominees is anything resembling a good idea?), that I see no reason to believe he'd even attempt to curb. I have the realization that NE liberals DO NOT connect with voters to any great stretch. I have a party that is ALREADY doing poorly in voting (after a close loss in 2000, they lost in 2002 and lost in 2004) and is doing increasingly poorly amongst "swing" voters. I have a candidate whose ENTIRE schtick is being completely anti-war in a war that just is not that unpopular. You have a comment about pro-life that is CLEARLY a lie as his loudest defenders opposed one of the candidates because he actually WAS pro-life. Just for an example of his ineptitude, his attack of FNC. Yeah, it's good meat for the base --- but it seems like whining to most Americans. Did Bush bitch about CBS to any degree after their hit job? No --- he let his supporters do it and basically ignored the whole thing. He made a joke here and there --- but he hardly played the role of martyr as Dean has. It's simple things like that --- simple things ANY leader should know --- that ought to make Dems tremble at what their party is doing to itself.
