Stephen Joseph Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I'd rather we forget about him
The Czech Republic Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I'm not the one rolling my eyes.
Stephen Joseph Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 What does is Popick's job again? You must have a degree in English
Slayer Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 What does is Popick's job again? You must have a degree in English I originally said something else and missed the past tense in my edit. You know what I meant though, econ boy That and my degree is in math, so english I have not to know.
Stephen Joseph Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Math as well then. Oh, and I'm an economist, since you were asking
Dr. Tom Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 And here I thought, "What does is Popick's job again?" was a riff on DJ Jeff's "How come did... ?" question of ages past. I'll have to stop giving Slayer so much credit.
Slayer Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Math as well then. Did you minor in English?
Slayer Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I just realized I got a double razz from Tom and Popick I don't know whether to laugh or cry
The Czech Republic Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Canada to NHL: Fuck you and your Union
Stephen Joseph Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 Math as well then. Did you minor in English? Eubonics. I be straight street yo.
Guest goodhelmet Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 OK, that is the 100% correct economic way of thinking. Now, give us the completely illogical and wrong-headed commie point of view, smartypants. Edited for accuracy. I thought you were above this sort of shit. Then again, I don't remember you having an economics degree... or a history degree... or any degree that gives you authority on the subject matter.
Slayer Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 I don't remember you having an economics degree I think someone here has one of those I just don't remember who it is
Guest Brian Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 Math as well then. Did you minor in English? Eubonics. I be straight street yo. Do you mean ebonics?
kkktookmybabyaway Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 That's how thugs say Ebonics, cracka...
Guest Brian Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 Real thugs don't say "ebonic"...it's like the feeling you get up your leg when a bia is backin' it up. El natural. Labeling is for da man.

OMG, I'd better not disparage a current box-office hit, since I don't have a film degree! And I'd better not offer thoughts about the NHL labor dispute, since I don't have a sports management degree. And I'd better not say I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, since I clealry don't have a Hospitality Management degree, or whatever hippie degree you need to run a hotel. What I do have, though, is common sense. And common sense tells me that unions have been a very destructive force in the American workplace. Have they done good? Yes, unquestionably. But they've also done a lot of harm, And in my opinion, the bad has outweighed the good for some time now. Oh, by the way, I can write that because I have an English degree. Maybe you need a degree in Not Being Six Days Late Making a Reply.

Well, we could point to the rapidly dwindling percentage of union employees as evidence that WORKERS don't much care for what they offer. -=Mike

Stephen Joseph Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 *raises hand...* Lower your hand hippie

Unions are still by far the best way for working people to win some semblance of economic security and to have a say in the terms of their employment. Union members make 25 percent more in wages than workers who don’t have a union. Women and black workers with a union make 30 percent more, and Latino union workers make 45 percent more. Union members are considerably more likely to have a defined-benefit pension plan and health care than workers without unions. Unions also curb discrimination on the job, push for workplace safety and give workers a much-needed collective voice.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted February 17, 2005 Report Posted February 17, 2005 Unions also curb discrimination on the job My ass. Explain then how one has to know (be related to) someone already employed at say, the local GM or Dana (UAW) mfg. plants to even have a prayer? The statement that a union makes the available positions very coveted is true, which also means they're harder to get, and are more subject to the nepotistic crap like I'm talking about.

Hardly. Speaking for MY industry, we know that the CWA has LOST about 80% of the attempts it made to unionize other wireless telecom industries. In fact, they REGULARLY have lost votes to KICK THEM OUT of shops. It's not the NLRB that has made unions useless. It is unions that have made unions useless. Companies want to hire the best employees. Unions provide nothing for employees with any modicum of talent. Union members make 25 percent more in wages than workers who don’t have a union. In my company specifically, I can guarantee you that our few union employees have considerably worse deals than even I have. I get a yearly bonus. They do not. I get raises more frequently. My pay scale is markedly better. Women and black workers with a union make 30 percent more, and Latino union workers make 45 percent more. Stats please. Unions also curb discrimination on the job, push for workplace safety and give workers a much-needed collective voice. Bullshit. The one unionized shop in my company called an ILLEGAL strike and then made veiled death threats against anybody who crossed the picket line. As my company pointed out to them --- they had the right to FIRE every single person who went out on the illegal strike. They opted not to. Again, unions don't do shit for an employee with talent or ability. If you're a talentless slug, then yeah, a union is your only hope to get paid better than your actual talent level warrants. -=Mike

Stats please. http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat41.pdf Anecdotes are cool and all. But I can't argue with your own personal experiences, AoO and MikeSC. If that's what you guys have seen, then you're probably gonna feel that way. The statistics show that unions help workers--better pay and better benefits on average. The World Bank even said so, and they're hardly left-wing. I'm not saying that they don't definitely have their warts, though.

I'd like to see if this includes such unions as the Screen Actor's Guild and the like that would ridiculously skew the numbers. -=Mike
