My computer's speakers are fucked up...

Ok, here's the deal, my speakers play everything fine, clean, crisp, sound on videos, DVD's, audio files downloaded from the 'Net.

 

Everything except CD's. When I try to play a CD the sound is all scratchy and it sounds like there is a short in the wire or something. But if it plays everything else fine, than a short wouldn't be the problem, would it? I thought it might be a scratched CD, but then I put a brand new CD in and it was even worse!

Double click on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner and make sure the volume knob labeled something like CD or CD Audio is turned up.

 

If that doesn't work, my second guess is that this is some crazy CD copy protection scheme, as more and more of them these days just make the disc completely unplayable in a computer, even in legitimate ways. Try putting in the oldest music CD you have and seeing if it happens there.

or rip it to your HD and then play it. Album should only be ~40-70MB

But then you won't get the closure of knowing if it's your CD drive or the CDs themselves.

I tried that already, and the songs still sounded shitty. The funny thing is, it worked fine for all of last semester and didn't start messin' up until a couple weeks ago.

Okay, I just tried turning the CD volume up like Jobber suggested, but I have to test it later because my roommate's still asleep.
