Vyce 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2005 Not that I'm not glad this guy is caught, but I do find it a bit amusing to see the police in....where is this, Wisoncsin? Anyway, the police / chief of police of the city patting themselves on the back over catching this guy, when they would have NEVER caught him if a) the guy himself hadn't started correspondence again after years of inactivity and b) the guy's own daughter helping to turn him in. I don't know, it just seems to me that the authorities got VERY lucky with this one.

After all, wasn't it a traffic ticket that led to the capture of the Son of Sam? -=Mike
Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2005 If you look hard enough, you could find things which did in every captured serial killer. Then again, if these were rational people who didn't fuck up, they wouldn't be serial killers. BTK made one of the following mistakes (a) coming out of the darkness to taunt the police (b) staying in the Wichita area © having children (d) looking like Bob Ryder (Richard Ramirez's mistakes were leaving too many people alive, and trying to carjack a latino)

Wasn't it a traffic ticket that got Bundy and overdue parking tickets that got Son of Sam? I could have sworn that is how they got nabbed.

2GOLD 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2005 I checked. A parking ticket did in Son of Sam (not overdue, just near the crime scene at the time of the murder) and Ted Bundy was caught when he was stopped at a police roadblock, so basically a speeding violation. So yes, the stupidest things do in serial killers.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2005 Joel Rifkin was stopped for speeding, which he made worse by going even longer. I don't think that there was actually any evidence on him...except for the rotting corpse in the backseat.
Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2005 http://www.kansas.com/mld/eagle/news/speci...tk/11002892.htm Workers prepare for 1990 Census Staff writer Note: This story originally appeared in The Eagle on May 13,1989. AL POLCZINSKI During the next six weeks, some Wichitans will receive a visit from a U.S. census worker The real census doesn't begin until next year -- April 1, 1990, has been designated as Census Day -- but federal workers will be out verifying addresses beginning next week. They are gathering information in areas that have had considerable growth or change since the 1980 census. Dennis Rader, census field operations supervisor for the Wichita area, said the address checks are made so that census questionnaires to be mailed out next March can go to correct addresses. "We find that living units have been built above businesses or residential garages, or that homes have been demolished to make way for new buildings, and we need those addresses," Rader said. Census workers can be identified by their red, white and blue identification badges and 11- by 16-inch tan address registers. Arturo Robles, a community awareness specialist with the Bureau of Census, said accurate census information is necessary because the data is used for the apportionment of the nation's 435 congressional seats and distribution of federal money to state and local governments. Because so much legislation and attention is being focused on the elderly, the handicapped and the homeless, particular attention will be given to those population groups, Robles said. Robles helps run the agency's Census Awareness and Products program that will alert potential users of information that census takers will gather next year. Rader also said the census bureau is accepting employment applications for many of the 700 jobs available in Kansas. The people who do much of the door-to-door work, called enumerators, will be employed for six to 12 weeks next spring and will be paid $5.50 an hour. They must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and take a written test. Interested persons can inquire at the nearest State Employment Services office or call the census recruiting operations office in Kansas City, Kan., at (913) 334-1375. Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2005 BTK could have been done in by a floppy disc http://www.kake.com/news/headlines/1315507.html Feb 28-- Deputies with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's department spent Monday morning usng metal detectors to try and find evidence related to the btk case. Sheriff Gary Steed told KAKE News the search pertains to information the task force has just received-but wouldn't give anymore details. Dennis Rader lives off the road. And its the same road where authorities apprehended Rader after a car stop after several days of planning. Rader is held in connection with ten murders. But Sunday evening a wire report linked Rader to three additional homcides- it set off a chain of events, including the District Attorney immediately calling the report absolutely incorrect. Chief Norman Williams said right now Rader is linked to just the homicides for which he's being held And Chief Williams warned the media to be careful about what they report. "These types of assumptions and speculations have and will continue to complicate an already complex investigation. In addition, inaccurate information does a disservice to the victims, their families and the community", said Chief Williams. Sources tell KAKE News it was the slightest mistake that lead police to the man they say is Wichita's most notorious serial killer. Police traced a floppy disc sent to KSAS-TV to Christ Lutheran Church, where Rader is president of the congregation. Rader's name was on a list of people who had access to the computer. Investigators started watching Rader immediately. The FBI obtained a DNA sample from Rader's daughter. Wher her DNA came back as a match police believed they had their man.
