Can't wait for Wednesday...

Season already started... sort of. U of Miami rocked Dontrelle Willis for 6 in 2 1/3 today as the Marlins fell to the Canes.

TEAM ORANGE beat TEAM WHITE in an O's intersquad game 4-0. Gibbons with a grand slam off of Kurt Ainsworth for the scoring. Oh and Chris Stynes spiked Miguel Tejada's ankle sliding hard into second. Miggy should be ok. Stynes should be released immediately for this treasonous act!

Jeff Brantley is an idiot. He said he doesn't care about steroids that much, and he wouldn't care if he was the manager and his player threw a batting helmet at him, as long as they were winning.

I've heard worse... all in the 2004 playoffs from the guy who sounded as if he was drunk every game.

Same old Felix Heredia. He'll throw a few good pitches and then get behind in the count... and when did Mets did up grandpa Andres Galarraga's body to play 1st? (I can't spell his name to save my life)

Nats win 5-3! I love that Frank Robinson is their manager. Wish he was with the O's but DC's got a great baseball guy leading them. Pitching looked pretty good, especially Tony Armas and Chad Cordero. The homerun Guillen hit was just launched. Keith Osik hit one too but he's awful, and hopefully won't make the team. Outfield defense looked bad with Endy Chavez and Jefferey Hammonds making ugly plays. Overall, it was nice to see the team out there on the field. They won't go anywhere in that division, at least not this year, but they should be a fun team...

Is it normal for college and pro teams to play one another? And is it normal for the college team to win!?

Regarding the loss: I seriously doubt the Marlins lineup played that hard for it. I mean, it's exhibition, a time to get warmed up for when it does count. Instead of trying to injure themselves doing everything possible to win, they just went out and had a good time.

College teams have been playing ball for a month now, while major leaguers haven't played since September/October. Remember, these are not serious games by any means.

Still let's say that USC had been playing for a month and the Cardinals decided they wanted a preseason exhibition game against USC and USC agreed.

Wouldn't the Cardinals murder them?

I mean the best college team can't ever beat the best pro-team.

Or is baseball just such a different monster that I'm wondering around in the bleachers looking for the ball while the guy at the plate bunts it?

In Spring Training your starters are only in for the first few innings. So half the game is basically played with bench players, minor leaguers and castoffs looking to earn a spot on the team, that you're average competitive college team could probably beat. Plus the regulars when they are in are more considered about just getting warm and not getting hurt, while the college kids are playing their hearts out...

I don't think its a matter of the college kids playing their hearts out. 90% of these early exhibition games are won by the pro teams. Looking at this game in particular, I am unable to find a complete box score. But from what I gathered, the Miami Hurricanes scored a few runs on defensive miscues.

The random nature of baseball gives lesser teams the chance to score upsets. On top of that, pitchers can be rusty their first few times out. Spring Training stats are essentially meaningless when evaluating players. Plus, most managers are more concerned with distributing playing time than with winning the ballgame.
