Use Your Illusion Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 I haven't seen any threads around here regarding this title, so I figured I'd make one to find out people's thoughts on the latest DMC release. I've never really been one to go on game reviews, as mostly I find them to be written by total twats who have no clue what they are on about in the first place. I'd much rather go on the first hand experiences of actual gamers, such as the folk here. So is this one worth the hype? I was a fan of the first, but hated the second, so I am a little wary about rushing out and buying this one.
Guest Failed Mascot Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 All I know about it is that its suppose to be a prequel to the first and explain how Dante got his powers. That probably means tamed down Dante when it comes to ass kicking.

That's only half the time. The other half they're being paid off the big-name game companies to kiss the ass of X title. How the hell do you take a publication seriously that's 50% ads for the same exact products that the mag gives high reviews for, and on top of that, the actual reviews for a game are perhaps 1/8 at the most the size of a preview layout? A friend of mine is getting DMC3/has gotten it already. I'll try to get his 2 cents when I hear from him next. 1up.com is apparently consciously trying to be the shittiest video game review site on the internet. There are a few writers on there I enjoy (Jeremy Parish/Toastyfrog, who I was reading back when he only wrote on his independent site and who happens to share my frothing hatred of Xenosaga, but he's more interesting for his ranting than he is for dry, unbiased reviews), but by and large they're the one who fall in the "clueless twats" category, along with the InsidePulse crew.
Conspiracy_Victim Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Well I use reviews as a guide personally, and GameInformer and I seem to be on the same page. They all have given DMC 3 high scores, so I'm looking forward to pick it up when it arrives today (for some reason Gamestop won't have them on shelves until this afternoon). I loved the first one, didn't care for the second one.
Guest MikeSC Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Just go to gamerankings.com. Tons o' reviews --- at least one has to be legit. -=Mike
Conspiracy_Victim Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Well I've got it and played around a little bit. The reviews who have made particular mention of the fact that this game is "hard" weren't kidding. This game kicks your ass right from the start and doesn't let up. I breezed through the first two fairly quickly but I've actually had to start a game on "easy" just to get anywhere. Looking forward to seeing how crazy it gets later on.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 As long as the new DMC is better than the second game, I'll be happy.
Use Your Illusion Posted March 3, 2005 Author Report Posted March 3, 2005 Good to see the reviews on the difficulty have been accurate, at least. I think I may have to purchase as new controller however and keep the old one near by to take out my frustrations on. God bless bulky-as-hell Mad Catz controllers that can absorb all of my anger.
Conspiracy_Victim Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Well I'm on Stage 7, and the game is still hard enough that I'm getting fairly frustrated. It's hard to get enough red orbs to buy enough healing stars to make it through a stage, and they go up in price quite substantially every time you buy one. Plus, the boss fight on this stage is brutal. As an aside, pay attention to the cutscenes before every scene. They fit the stage number in on every one. Not exactly earth-shattering I know, but kinda cool nontheless.
Lightning Flik Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 A webcomic's take on the insane hardiness of DMC3: It's challenging enough ... And yes, I tried it at a friend's, and yes the game is horribly difficult. Makes me want to play it so much more now though. If only I had my PS2 still.
Conspiracy_Victim Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Well, finally got past stage 7 boss fight. It isn't easy, even ON Easy. Basically I went back and replayed the earlier non-boss levels to get supplies and get my stances higher. This is getting like Ninja Gaiden difficult.
AndrewTS Posted March 5, 2005 Report Posted March 5, 2005 The friend of mine who has it loves it, although the death-looking dude was just barely killing him after he cleared out the regular baddies. He only started playing today and made it to level 4, though. Dante seems so much more badass in this one it isn't funny--from the variety of weapons, to all the slick ways to use them (he showed me some gun-kata-esque stuff as he mowed down quite a large wave of baddies), and the various ways of fighting you can use sure as hell looks intriguing. Plus, he just reeks of style. Right now he's replaying old levels to acquire more orbs, though.

So far they are my favorite weapons. You go totally nuts on people with them. As for the gunkata, just wait. Apparently there's a scene that looks like a direct copy of the last fight scene from Equilibrium. I've seen a little bit of it and it rocks. Of course, the cutscene before scene 6 is pretty damn cool itself. Replaying levels is about the only way to get through this game. It's nearly impossible to get enough orbs to buy everything you need just by playing the game straight through.
