EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 How are you assessing negro leaguers stats exactly, with weighting their performance and such? Basically I'm going to look for similar players, and assess their statistics from there, value-wise. I have the 1993 MacMillan Encyclopedia at my disposal, which carries limited statistics for Negro League players.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 I've got 19 teams (I miscounted earlier). Would anyone else like a spot? Here's the players so far... Alkeiper - Stroudsburg Poconos LooneyTune - Cleveland Spiders Vern Gagne - Rochester Hop Bitters JHawk - Washington Senators Slapnuts! - St. Louis Browns Precious Roy - New York Highlanders Beast - Newark Bears KingPK - Boston Beaneaters Treble - Brooklyn Bridegrooms The Californian - Las Vegas 51s HarleyQuinn - Pawtucket Red Sox Bored - Cincinnati Kelly's Killers The Man In Blak - Kansas City Athletics MartyEWR - Ottawa Athletics Brian - Baltimore Elite Giants IK Cool Jew - Bethlehem Fightin' Hebrews Dr. Tom - Aberdeen Ironbirds nogoodnick - Portland Beavers bravesfan - Richmond Braves
The Man in Blak Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Oh, crap. I didn't notice that MARTYEWR had the Ottawa Athletics. Let's try the Kansas City Monarchs instead, in a tip of the cap to the historic Negro League team.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 4, 2005 Author Report Posted March 4, 2005 You can have the same nickname, if you wish. I'll probably keep separate city names, in which case treble gets the Brooklyn Bridegrooms.
MARTYEWR Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 MiB - I took the Ottawa Athletics because they were the original AAA International League team in Ottawa in the '50s. Completely different from the top farm team.
The Man in Blak Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Nah, it's no big deal. 'Monarchs' is fine.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 5, 2005 Author Report Posted March 5, 2005 Here's the draft order... Dr. Tom Alkeiper Brian - Baltimore Elite Giants Vern Gagne - Buffalo Feds Cena's Writer - Chicago Black Sox bravesfan - Richmond Braves JHawk Beast Bored - Cincinnati Kelly's Killers nogoodnick The Man In Blak - Kansas City Athletics MartyEWR - Ottawa Athletics Treble - Brooklyn Bridegrooms The Californian - Las Vegas 51s KingPK - Boston Beaneaters HarleyQuinn - Pawtucket Red Sox LooneyTune - Cleveland Spiders Slapnuts! - St. Louis Browns IK Cool Jew Precious Roy - New York Highlanders Remember, the draft runs serpentine. We'll commence the draft tomorrow at 4pm ET. I just want to work with the OOTP program and make sure of what we can and cannot work with.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 5, 2005 Author Report Posted March 5, 2005 As a reminder, we do have one slot left open, if anyone would like to join. In addition, the following players are ineligible. A. Fringe players, such as Eddie Gaedel, Pete Gray, etc. Players should have some semblance of a major league career. B. Pitchers before 1893, when the mound stood 50 feet from home plate. In other words, no Hoss Radbourn.
Vern Gagne Posted March 5, 2005 Report Posted March 5, 2005 (edited) So will be drafting Ty Cobb's entire career numbers, or Ty Cobb's 1911 numbers? Edite to ask what Serpentine means? Edited March 5, 2005 by Vern Gagne
Guest LooneyTune Posted March 5, 2005 Report Posted March 5, 2005 Man my drafting order sure has sucked this year for every fantasy league, now this one.
Styles Posted March 5, 2005 Report Posted March 5, 2005 Al, will this draft be done like the Head 2 Head fantasy, i.e. we post our picks in this thread when it's our turn (within a certain time limit?)
Guest Brian Posted March 5, 2005 Report Posted March 5, 2005 Are we really talking about 40 players each for 20 teams? That's outrageous! I'll take the Baltimore Elite Giants.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 5, 2005 Author Report Posted March 5, 2005 So will be drafting Ty Cobb's entire career numbers, or Ty Cobb's 1911 numbers? You draft the player, and I select a year to represent him. I will make adjustments in extreme cases, such as Norm Cash or Ken Caminiti, if the player's best year is far out of line from his career norms. Edite to ask what Serpentine means? We reverse the order every round. If you draft 17th in the first round, you'll draft 4th in the second round. Al, will this draft be done like the Head 2 Head fantasy, i.e. we post our picks in this thread when it's our turn (within a certain time limit?) Yes. If 24 hours go by, I will autopick for the player. Are we really talking about 40 players each for 20 teams? That's outrageous! After the first 15 rounds, we select two at a time, and after 25, we select three at a time. As for the sheer amount of players, well, just remember the last 15 are just reserves, so it shouldn't hurt your team to badly if you draft Enos Cabell.
Dr. Tom Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Goddamnit, I was going to use the Elite Giants as my team. Shrug. Al, my pick is ready to go, and your presumption was correct. When do I actually have to make the pick?
Dr. Tom Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 Since the moniker I was going to use was taken, I think I'll be the Aberdeen Ironbirds.
Beast Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 Man, I totally forgot about this, good thing my turn hasn't come up yet. Anyway, I'll name my team, the Newark Bears.
HarleyQuinn Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Hey Al, a few questions... 1) How long will the season schedule be? 2) How will park factors come into play? As in, can we choose our own home parks? 3) How will the league totals be set up? Will they represent the modern day style?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted March 9, 2005 Author Report Posted March 9, 2005 1) How long will the season schedule be? 162 games, with two rounds of playoffs. 2) How will park factors come into play? As in, can we choose our own home parks? Park factors will come into play. I've been scouring the net for a local park to represent each team, but if you would like to select your own park, by all means do so. Please do not request "extreme" parks such as the LA Coliseum, or Braves Field in Boston. 3) How will the league totals be set up? Will they represent the modern day style? Yes. I might slide it into the 1980s system though.
HarleyQuinn Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 I'll take Fenway Park *runs from KingPK*
Guest LooneyTune Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 I'll take the randomly asigned stadium.
KingPK Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 I'll take Fenway Park *runs from KingPK* You're the Pawtucket Red Sox, so shouldn't you take McCoy Stadium? Yeah, I thought so.
Styles Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Well, if we're being historical the St. Louis Browns played in Sportsmans Park. But, if I have the choice, I'd like Memorial Stadium, since the franchise lineage is the same anyway!
Precious Roy Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 EDIT* I want the original dimensions, 295 ft. (right), 490 ft. (center), and 281 ft. (left)
