Championship Week

Recommended Posts

Vern, I got a "Couldn't Find Article Message", but I was able to find the articles you were talking about. (Go under the College Basketball section, guys.)

Those articles are definetely very interesting, and the Davis Article brings up a very excellent point about the RPI. You cannot just look at the ranking number. There are a multitude of other numbers that are looked at (Conference Strength, OOC Schedule, Strength of Schedule, Margin of Victory and Defeats, and Head to Head Matchups).

The RPI does have its problems, but it is used properly in most cases. And like someone else on this forum said, it's the final 10 Teams that are going to take up the 5 last spots, where the RPI means a damn big deal, and is used to determine certain things. More often than not, the big debates take place between Teams 64 - 70 (The Last 2 in, the first 5 out). It is not a perfect process, but it is much better than a certain process that beings in B and ends is S.

Thanks Vern. Ya know, I want to see if anyone is interested. Does anyone want me to put anymore full tournament resumes of other teams up here for fun? I can acutally see if I can get the full info that selection committee uses to make better analysis.

And Farleigh Dickison Wins the Northeast.

And Norte Dame loses.

Wow, just wow. This is the epitome of BAD LOSS, losing to a 9 - 18 (2 - 14 in conference) with a Ranking in the Bottom Half of College Hoops does not make you look good in the selection committee, period. And when you add the fact they are the losers of the last 4 of 5, it makes them look worse.

Once again, congratulations to Notre Dame, for fucking the Big East over, again.

And it looks like Montana will be getting the bid from the Big Sky conference.

Hell yeah, bitches. It's kind of funny that a school like Montana just has to win a few games in the conference tournament to make it to the NCAAs, but WSU has pretty much no shot at all until they finish turning the program around.

Yeah I like reading those, I don't really have any teams in mind, maybe just the "bubble" teams would be cool.

Michigan St. hasn't really been amazing this year, hasn't been bad....they're just there. Truthfully I also think it's because people are also a little tired of MSU.

An entire article about the Big 10 tourney with 0 mention, not even in passing, of MSU? What the hell?

They're in the NCAA tournament already, they're not one of the big favourites to win it all, and they can't really improve or ruin their seeding much, if any, by how they do in the Big 10 tournament. The focus is going to be on the teams mentioned in the article (and, likely, Minnesota).

Does anyone think Kentucky deserves that last #1 seed?

I was thinking more along the lines of the winner of the Big East tourney because I really don't think Kentucky is that good. I thought the same thing last year when they got that #1 seed. I thought OSU should've gotten that and I was right in the end when OSU ran through 2 great teams.

Nobody in the Big East will get the last 1 seed, because none of them have been consistently good throughout the season. BC is the only one that even has a shot, but they went 4-3 in their last 7 games. If they don't win (and I seriously doubt they will), you're looking at a 6-loss team getting a #1 seed, and that just doesn't work.

The last #1 will go to Kentucky, Duke or Kansas. I would pick UK over the other two simply based on their finish...UK went 8-2 over their last 10, as opposed to Duke (6-4 with 2 questionable losses) and Kansas (6-4 with two VERY questionable losses).

Well I still see UK making a round of 32 or Sweet 16 exit.

Welcome to the club.

I know it is early in the 2nd half, but West Virginia is already up by 22 on BC. In no way, shape or form does BC deserve a number 1 seed.

That prediction is looking like it will come true a few days early. At present, BC is getting thrashed by West Virginia 52-36 in the second half. If WV hangs on, this should basically lock them into the tournament.

EDIT: West Virginia is up 8 with under a minute left, so this one should be over. Meanwhile, Maryland looks to playing like they want to go to the NIT against Clemson. Sorry NoCalMike.

EDIT #2: West Virginia defeats BC 78-72, and Clemson knocks off Maryland 84-72. I am still trying to figure why the heck did Maryland foul them with 3 seconds left? Geez, you're down 10 with three seconds left, give it up already!

The Clemson-Maryland game put both teams into the NIT. Clemson just guaranteed themselves a winning record (now 16-14).

Oh, and Utah is struggling with 11-16 Colorado State...down one at halftime. The bubble teams sweat even more.

South Carolina loses to Ole Miss on a pretty tough call from the refs. Carolina hit what was originally called a three to tie it with about 2 seconds left, then intercepted the inbounds pass with .9 left. The refs reviewed the three, and ruled it a two because the shooter had his foot on the line, but to me, the replays were just too close to overrule that call in such a big point in the game. Carolina inbounded the all, but missed the last shot.

Okay. Time to for some more of "Kaiba's Bubble Team Analysis"

This is the Criteria that I will be using

- D-I record (Overall Wins will now be put in parthensies)

- Overall New RPI

- Overall Old RPI

- Conference

- Conference Strength/RPI

- Conference record

- Non-conference record

- Non-conference RPI

- Non Conference Strength of Schedule

- Overall Strength of Schedule

- Home Record

- Netural Court Record

- Road record

- Record in last 10 games

- Current Streak

- NABC rankings

- Record against teams sorted by RPI

- "Marquee wins," "Key Wins", "Good losses," "Bad Losses"

- Things to Look For

- Overall Shot

And I will be covering almost every single "Bubble" Team in the next 3 Days unless certain Teams in the Mid Majors and Low Majors win their auto-bids. Then on Sunday, if there is still some question, I will be covering the Number 1 Seed Candidates as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now on with the show, with Norte Dame

- Wins: 17

- Losses: 11

- New RPI: 93

- Old RPI: 66

- Conference: Big East

- Conference Strength/RPI: 4

- Conference Record: 9 - 7

- Non Conference Record: 8 - 3

- Non Conference RPI: 157

- Non Conference SOS: 259

- Overall Strength of Schedule: 76

- Home Record: 13 - 4

- Road Record: 4 - 6

- Neutral Court Record: 0 - 1

- Record in Last 10 Games: 4 - 6

- Current Streak: 2 Losses

NABC Ranking: N/A

Record aganist Teams Sorted by RPI

1-50: 3 - 7

51-100: 3 - 2

101-200: 5 - 2

201+: 6 - 0

-Marquee Wins (Victories aganist the Top 25 RPI): Villanova, Boston College, Connecuit

-Key Wins (Victories aganist the Top 100 RPI): Indiana, Georgetown, West Virginia

-Good Losses (Losses aganist the Top 25 RPI): Syracuse(X2), UCONN, Villanova

-Bad Losses (Losses aganist the Bottom 150 RPI, any Season Series you were swept aganist a Team with a RPI exceeding 100, and any home losses after Feburary 6th): Rutgers, UCLA, Michigan

Things to Look for

+ Notre Dame is in a Power Conference, so the margin of Error is higher than St. Mary's or Southern Illinois and MUCH higher than Pacific.

+ 9 Wins in the Big East, more often than not gets you consideration, if not completely in.

+ 3 Key Wins and 3 Marquee Wins looks very good in the eyes of those in "The Bunker"

+ Played, arguably the tougest Big East Schedule

- 4 out of 10 in their last 10 games.

- 1 out of 5 in their final 5 games

- 2 straight losses

- Getting Embarrased by UCLA on their home court didn't win them any favors.

- Out of Conference Schedule was completely abysmal. With a ranking of 259 out of 330 Teams they are in the bottom 21 percentile of the NCAA in this ranking. And losing to Michigan makes it even worse.

- Losing to Rutgers makes you look bad, even if you're the top 1 seed. Losing to Rutgers as a Bubble Team may end up bursting your bubble.

- A much larger bubble group than expected, makes them look even worse as teams like West Virginia, UAB and even Texas A & M are making their cases by winning, instead of losing like ND did.

Overall

The Big East is one of the tougest conferences, if not the tougest conference in the country to win in. 9 -7 with a very good OOC schedule makes you a virtual lock for the tournament. A 80s Georgetown like schedule with a 9 - 7 record, and a bad loss in a Tournament makes you look very bad. As much as ESPN may say that ND is in the Tourmanment, they may find themselves with Maryland, as one of the first teams out.

I made a bet with my friend Jack about UConn's ranking in the tourney.

He doesn't think they can get a top 5 ranking, even if they win the Big East. So if they win the Big East and are in the top 5, then he has to buy me a pack of smokes. And if they win the Big East and don't get a top 5, he wins.

Even without the Big East win, I think UConn will get a top 5 seed.

Notre Dame has virtually no shot at the tournament now. Even if Nevada, Pacific and Utah all win their conference tournaments (which may be a stretch), there are just too many more deserving teams ahead of them.

Texas A&M and Miami both lost tonight in the first round of their respective conference tournaments. Miami is definitely off the bubble now, and A&M is probably off as well.

UCLA also lost, but is likely safe.
