Damaramu 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 This is a spin-off of the ownership thread. How does your local universtiy or your favorite university treat ALL of it's sports programs? The university charges the most for football tickets, advertises for it and basically treats it like a pro team. EVERY sport at OU is free with a student ID EXCEPT Football and Men's Basketball games. And Men's basketball tickets generally cost 15-25 bucks. Football tickets cost 40-100 bucks(red river shootout tickets are like 65 for students). Most of the universities sports funds go to the football stadium and the team. Most commercials and sponsorships are for them. A basketball player can walk to class without anyone stopping him. Football players have to put on headphones and baseball caps and look at the ground if they want to make it in peace. Now as much as they put into football and basketball as good as they are at that they neglect every other sport. OU ranks among the lowest in baseball facilities. The softball stadium is really small, and the soccer and tennis fields are like nothing. They never advertise for any other sports. I never know when softball, baseball, or women's basketball games are. But if there was no ESPN then I would still know when every football and basketball game is b/c of the way the university treats it. So that's what it's like at my university. Football players are gods. Basketball players are cool. Everyone else.......well good thing you play that sport kid. Good job. But we don't care. At least that's how the university looks at it. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 Virginia is great right now. All sports are free for students. Football is obviously the biggest draw, and basketball would be too if the team was any good at all. Pete Gillen's gone after this year, though, so a new coach and the completion of the huge new arena (the current has 6,000 capacity) should get interest back up. We're really good in a lot of the other sports, especially lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer for both men and women. Late-season games draw a few thousand people, which is pretty cool. Ultimately it's a healthy set of programs, and it's always subservient to our academic and funding standards, which I think is really important. I love UVA football; I love my UVA education more. Guest MikeSC Report post Posted March 5, 2005 S. Carolina is obviously a football-first school (odd, since our team is always average --- but our attendance is ridiculous). The baseball team is FINALLY getting a new field to play on. It's sad because they've been an elite team for years now. The university has actually pissed off the city of Columbia a ton of times. Our outgoing AD Mike McGee managed to: 1) Prevent the Carolina Panthers from playing here for their inaugural season 2) Prevented big concerts from using Williams-Brice Stadium 3) Managed to get the local minor league baseball team to leave town by refusing to share a stadium with them 4) Has tried to get the local minor league hockey team to leave town 5) Prevented the Aloha Bowl, I think, from moving to Williams-Brice Stadium. -=Mike
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 The College of Charleston pretty much has Basketball (not as much as in the mid-90s when they were making it to the NCAA tournament three years in a row or whatever) and Baseball going for it. Stuff's free for students.

bob_barron 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 Ryerson students just defeated something that would give more money for athletics. I don't think our basketball or hockey team won a game this year
Alro 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 At my university (Georgetown College), athletics are a pretty big deal. Football players are gods due to their 2 or 3 NAIA National Titles in the span of 5 or so years. Men's and women's basketball are kind of even, due to both being Final Four teams. Volleyball is just behind that. All the other sports are just kind of there. Even when the men's tennis team was a top 25 program and hosted the national tournament, nobody gave a shit. Students do get free admission with the student IDs, though. I can't say that I complained about that.

Everyone else.......well good thing you play that sport kid. You just described 90% of all American universities Minnesota is one of those schools. The hockey team, brought in the most money last year. Mostly because the football team plays in a dome, and the basketballl team sucked.
lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2005 Well, at Michigan, hockey is really huge, but football is hands down the most popular sports. Pretty much if you play any sport at Michigan you are viewed as a god except if you are on the girl's basketball team which is just flat out terrible and some students tried to get the University to drop it and give the funding to girls' softball and field hockey
