aintitcool.com reports that Bond is down to two contenders... Julian McMahon from Nip/Tuck and Daniel Craig from Road to Perdition.

I haven't seen Julian McMahon but I thought Craig was great in RTP... he also looks like he could play one hell of a cold, calculating killer-type Bond

Also, from IanFleming.org :

"In an interview given to Adam Minns (March 11th), the two screenwriters revealed that the screenplay for Bond 21 will retain the infamous torture scene from the novel, together with the chilling line “the bitch is dead”, uttered by 007 towards the end. There will also be a more realistic approach to violence, and Bond will be less reliant on one-liners.

Robert Wade also said that the new script, as it currently stands, will indeed be concerned with Bond’s formative years, exploring how 007 came to be, in Wade’s words, “hermetically sealed, emotionally”. Commenting on the torture scene, Wade said: “If it is done the right way, there are going to be a lot of crossed legs in the cinema”."

I like the sound of that.

Julian McMahon is great on Nip/Tuck, but until we see how he does as Dr. Doom it remains to be seen how he translates to movies.

What's the theme of the torture scene? Genital mutilation?

The torture scene:

The bad guy puts Bond in a chair with no bottom so his balls hang down and beats the shit out of his nutsack with a carpet duster and then threatens to cut them off.

I like Julian McMahon, but I really would prefer Clive Owens.

I didn't feel that way before, but I've been sold on Owens. And he would absolutely make a great Bond.

That's a really funny torture scene.

It's a sadistic scene... probably one of the best in any spy novel, or book for that matter. I can't wait to see who they choose to play Le Chiffre, aka: the ball caner
