Four years ago tonight...

Recommended Posts

I honestly cant believe its been 4 years already. That was so unreal seeing Vince on Nitro. That's the only time I've ever wished I didn't read stuff off the net. I would like to know what kind of shock I would have felt to tune in for Nitro, and see VINCE MCMAHON staring me in the face.

My personal favorite moment was seeing Shane McMahon come out (with chyron) on Nitro. It was so surreal that even after the segment was over and they had gone to commercial I just stared at the screen dumbfounded.

But Shane coming out was rather sad because that was the point at which you first began to sense "they're going to screw this up, badly."

The only thing I hate about that night was that I was at Panama City Beach for Spring Break the week prior, and had to leave on Sunday, the day before the last Nitro. I won the Mr. Nitro Contest, and probably would have been in the highlight package they did on that show, but I had to go back because of school. I did get to meet and drink with a lot of the wrestlers that week, though.

Seeing Vince on Nitro was incredible, especially since I knew nothing about it. However, after that I remember very little from that last Nitro. Sting and Flair's embrace in the middle of the ring stands out, so does seeing Shane coming out on Nitro and being able to see it happening on both shows.

So, what happened on that night's Raw?

I was reading the link to the review of the last Thunder, and this stuck out to me:

The Good: The cruiserweights looked awesome once again. Pretty solid show up until the last match.

The Bad: Fusient and AOL/Time Warner giving WCW fans false hope and then yanking it away.

The Ugly: Vince McMahon will be the only major player in the wrestling game, at least for a month or so. I just hope he doesn't get his hands on WCW.

My my my, how much can things change in a matter of days?

I was there the exact same week. I think I left Saturday. I completely forgot about Nitro Spring Break until after I was home.

I had the advantage of staying at the Boardwalk Beach Resort Hotel, which is right next to La Vela. The wrestlers stayed at our hotel, and were visible all day and all evening. They were doing promotions on the beach and all that. I can't be exact, but I'm pretty sure the last Nitro was shot in the parking lot of the hotel, not at La Vela like years before.

I can't believe it's only been 4 years. Feels like a lot longer than that that McMahon's had this assed out circle jerk monopoly going on....

The most memorable moment from that night's RAW would be when Rock gave Austin the Stone Cold Stunner after their match (Rock/Austin def. Kane/Taker).

My fondest memory of that night was when Vince got in the ring, say a wrestlers name and the crowd would cheer or jeer him. He got to Buff Bagwell, everyone cheered and Vince's face was priceless.

What I also found funny was that everyone at the last Nitro was saying how WWF sucked and what not, but I bet any money half of those kids didn't watch WCW at all.

Is it just me, or does Booker look alot older in those pics than he does nowadays? Must've been the stress of carrying the dead weight of WCW at the time.

Ahh, but it feels like an eternity for me since that night, what a rollercoaster ride it has been since.

The thing that stands out to me is wondering what they were going to do for the last hour, because I hadn't payed attention to WCW in so long that I didn't even know Nitro had been cut back to 2 hours.

I remember about 6 months before it happened, there were rumours of Linda McMahon talking with execs. It was one of the only times I ever thought "It would never happen". Had I known that WCW would have been purchased for under $5 million, I would have changed my tune. I still can't get over how they fucked it up. They had Hogan, Nash, Hall, Bischoff, and Goldberg... problem was, they didn't bring them in at the same time and instead used big names like Lance Storm, Hugh Morris, and Booker T. Not to mention making the storyline Another McMahon vs. McMahon storyline, rather than WCW vs. WWE. It's telling about the wrestling business that morons like this are still far-and-away the most successful promotion in North America. Or perhaps its telling about wrestling fans.
